The Book of Joel is one of the Twelve Minor Prophets in the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) and the Christian Old Testament, delivering a powerful message of divine judgment, repentance, and ultimate restoration. While the exact date of its composition remains uncertain, scholars propose a broad range of possible periods, with many suggesting it was written between the 6th and 4th centuries BCE, possibly during or after the Babylonian exile. The book speaks to a time of crisis in Israel, marked by a devastating locust plague that becomes a central metaphor for both immediate disaster and future divine judgment.

Joel is structured into two main sections. The first half (Joel 1–2) describes an unprecedented locust invasion, consuming crops, causing famine, and bringing national devastation. This catastrophe is not merely a natural disaster but a divine warning, foreshadowing the coming "Day of the Lord," a key theme in prophetic literature referring to God’s decisive intervention in human history. Joel calls the people, including priests, elders, and all inhabitants of the land, to gather in fasting, mourning, and repentance, urging them to return to God with sincere hearts rather than empty religious rituals.

The second half of the book (Joel 2:18–3:21) shifts dramatically to restoration and hope. In response to genuine repentance, God promises to restore the land, bless His people abundantly, and defeat their enemies. One of the most significant passages is Joel 2:28-29, where God declares: "I will pour out my Spirit on all people", foretelling a time when prophecy, visions, and divine presence will no longer be limited to certain individuals but will be universally available. This prophecy is later cited in the New Testament (Acts 2:16-21) by the apostle Peter on the Day of Pentecost, marking its deep influence on Christian theology regarding the Holy Spirit.

Thematically, the Book of Joel connects judgment with mercy, destruction with renewal, and human repentance with divine blessing. It reinforces the idea that God’s justice is real, but so is His compassion—those who turn back to Him will experience restoration and an outpouring of divine presence. It also develops the apocalyptic vision of the "Day of the Lord," emphasizing both a near-term fulfillment (such as Israel’s deliverance from oppression) and a future, cosmic fulfillment involving ultimate divine judgment and the triumph of God’s kingdom.

00:04The word of the Lord that came to Joao, the son of Pithilo.
00:09Hear this, ye old men, and give ear all ye inhabitants of the land.
00:14Hath this been in your days, or even in the days of your fathers?
00:20Tell ye your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children
00:25another generation.
00:28That which the palmer worm hath left hath the locust eaten, and that which the locust
00:33hath left hath the canker worm eaten, and that which the canker worm hath left hath the caterpillar
00:39eaten.
00:40Awake, ye drunkards, and weep, and howl, all ye drinkers of wine, because of the new wine,
00:48for it is cut off from your mouth.
00:51For a nation is come up upon my land, strong and without number, whose teeth are the teeth
00:58of a lion, and he hath the cheek teeth of a great lion.
01:02He hath laid my vine waste, and barked my fig tree.
01:08He hath made it clean bare, and cast it away.
01:11The branches thereof are made white.
01:14Lament like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth.
01:20The meat offering and the drink offering is cut off from the house of the Lord.
01:25The priests the Lord's ministers mourn.
01:28The field is wasted, the land mourneth, for the corn is wasted, the new wine is dried up,
01:35the oil languisheth.
01:38Be ye ashamed, O ye husbandmen.
01:41Howl, O ye vinedressers, for the wheat and for the barley, because the harvest of the field
01:48is perished.
01:49The vine is dried up, and the fig tree languisheth.
01:53The pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, even all the trees of the
01:59field are withered, because joy is withered away from the sons of men.
02:06Gird yourselves, and lament ye priests.
02:09Howl, ye ministers of the altar.
02:12Come lie all night in sackcloth, ye ministers of my God, for the meat offering and the drink
02:19offering is withholden from the house of your God.
02:23Sanctify ye a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the elders and all the inhabitants of
02:30the land into the house of the Lord your God, and cry unto the Lord, Alas for the day!
02:37For the day of the Lord is at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come.
02:46Is not the meat cut off before our eyes, yea, joy and gladness from the house of our God?
02:55The seed is rotten under their clods.
03:00The garners are laid desolate, the burns are broken down, for the corn is withered.
03:07How do the beasts groan?
03:09The herds of the cattle are perplexed, because they've no pasture, yea, the flocks of sheep
03:14are made desolate.
03:16O Lord, to thee will I cry, for the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness,
03:23and the flame hath burned all the trees of the field.
03:27The beasts of the field cry also unto thee, for the rivers of waters are dried up, and
03:33the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness.
03:38Chapter 2
03:40Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain.
03:46Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble.
03:49For the day of the Lord cometh, for it is nigh at hand, a day of darkness and of gloominess,
03:57a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains, a great
04:03people and a strong.
04:05There hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years
04:11of many generations.
04:13A fire devoureth before them, and behind them a flame burneth.
04:19The land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness, yea,
04:27nothing shall escape them.
04:29The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses, and as horsemen so shall they run.
04:36Like the noise of chariots on the tops of mountains shall they leap, like the noise of a flame of
04:43fire that devoureth the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array.
04:50Before their face the people shall be much pained.
04:53All faces shall gather blackness.
04:57They shall run like mighty men.
04:59They shall climb the wall like men of war.
05:02And they shall march everyone on his ways.
05:05And they shall not break their ranks.
05:07Neither shall one thrust another.
05:09They shall walk everyone in his path.
05:13And when they fall upon the sword, they shall not be wounded.
05:17They shall run to and fro in the city.
05:20They shall run upon the wall.
05:22They shall climb up upon the houses.
05:25They shall enter in at the windows like a thief.
05:29The earth shall quake before them.
05:32The heavens shall tremble.
05:34The sun and the moon shall be dark.
05:37And the stars shall withdraw their shining.
05:40And the Lord shall utter his voice before his army.
05:44For his camp is very great.
05:46For he is strong that executeth his word.
05:50For the day of the Lord is great and very terrible.
05:54And who can abide it?
05:56Therefore also now, saith the Lord, turn ye even to me with all your heart.
06:02And with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning.
06:06And rend your heart, and not your garments.
06:10And turn unto the Lord your God.
06:12For he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness.
06:18And repenteth him of the evil.
06:21Who knoweth if he will return and repent?
06:24And leave a blessing behind him.
06:27Even a meat offering, and a drink offering unto the Lord your God.
06:31Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly.
06:38Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and
06:45those that suck the breasts.
06:47Let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet.
06:53Let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep between the porch and the altar.
07:00And let them say, Spare thy people, O Lord.
07:04And give not thine heritage to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them.
07:10Wherefore should they say among the people, Where is their God?
07:15Then will the Lord be jealous for his land, and pity his people.
07:19Yea, the Lord will answer, and say unto his people, Behold, I will send you corn, and wine,
07:27and oil, and ye shall be satisfied therewith.
07:32And I will no more make you a reproach among the heathen.
07:36But I will remove far off from you the northern army, And will drive him into a land barren
07:43and desolate, with his face toward the east sea, And his hinder part toward the utmost sea.
07:51And his stink shall come up, and his ill savour shall come up, Because he hath done great things.
07:59Fear not, O land, be glad and rejoice, For the Lord will do great things.
08:06Be not afraid, ye beasts of the field, For the pastures of the wilderness do spring,
08:12For the tree beareth her fruit, The fig tree and the vine do yield their strength.
08:19Be glad then, ye children of Zion, And rejoice in the Lord your God,
08:26For he hath given you the former rain moderately, And he will cause to come down for you the rain,
08:32The former rain, and the latter rain In the first month.
08:36And the floors shall be full of wheat, And the fats shall overflow with wine and oil.
08:43And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, The canker-worm, and the
08:49caterpillar, and the palmer-worm, My great army which I sent among you.
08:56And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, And praise the name of the Lord your God,
09:03That hath dealt wondrously with you, And my people shall never be ashamed.
09:09And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, And that I am the Lord your God,
09:15And none else.
09:17And my people shall never be ashamed.
09:20And it shall come to pass afterward, That I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh,
09:27And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams,
09:33Your young men shall see visions, And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids
09:39In those days will I pour out my Spirit.
09:43And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth, Blood and fire, and pillars of
09:50smoke.
09:52The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the great and the
09:57terrible day of the Lord come.
10:01And it shall come to pass, That whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered.
10:08For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, As the Lord hath said,
10:14And in the remnant whom the Lord shall call.
10:19Chapter 3 For behold in those days, and in that time,
10:24When I shall bring again the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem, I will also gather all nations,
10:32And will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, And will plead with them there
10:37For my people, and for my heritage Israel, Whom they have scattered among the nations,
10:43And parted my land.
10:46And they have cast lots for my people, And have given a boy for an harlot,
10:51And sold a girl for wine that they might drink.
10:55Yea, and what have ye to do with me, O Tyre and Zidon, And all the coasts of Palestine?
11:03Will ye render me a recompense?
11:06And if ye recompense me swiftly and speedily, Will I return your recompense upon your own
11:13head?
11:15Because ye have taken my silver and my gold, And have carried into your temples my goodly
11:21Pleasant things.
11:23The children also of Judah, And the children of Jerusalem, Have ye sold unto the Grecians,
11:29That ye might remove them far from their border.
11:32Behold, I will raise them out of the place whither ye have sold them, And will return your
11:39recompense upon your own head.
11:41And I will sell your sons and your daughters Into the land of the children of Judah, And
11:46they shall sell them to the Sabaeans, To a people far off, For the Lord hath spoken it.
11:55Proclaim ye this among the Gentiles, Prepare war, wake up the mighty men,
12:02Let all the men of war draw near, Let them come up.
12:07Beat your plowshares into swords, And your pruning hooks into spears,
12:13Let the weak say, I am strong.
12:17Assemble yourselves, and come, all ye heathen, And gather yourselves together round about.
12:23Thither cause the mighty ones to come down, O Lord.
12:29Let the heathen be wakened, And come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat,
12:34For there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about.
12:40Put ye in the sickle, For the harvest is ripe, Come, get you down,
12:46For the press is full, The vats overflow, For their wickedness is great.
12:52Multitudes, multitudes, In the valley of decision,
12:58For the day of the Lord is near In the valley of decision.
13:04The sun and the moon shall be darkened, And the stars shall withdraw their shining.
13:11The Lord also shall roar out of Zion, And utter his voice from Jerusalem,
13:17And the heavens and the earth shall shake, But the Lord will be the hope of his people,
13:22And the strength of the children of Israel.
13:27So shall ye know that I am the Lord your God, Dwelling in Zion, My holy mountain.
13:35Then shall Jerusalem be holy, And there shall be no strangers pass through her any more.
13:42And it shall come to pass in that day, That the mountains shall drop down new wine,
13:47And the hills shall flow with milk, And all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters,
13:53And the fountain shall come forth Of the house of the Lord, And shall water the valley of Shittim.
14:00Egypt shall be a desolation, And Edom shall be a desolate wilderness,
14:06For the violence against the children of Judah, Because they have shed innocent blood in their land.
14:13But Judah shall dwell for ever, And Jerusalem from generation to generation.
14:20For I will cleanse their blood that I have not cleansed, For the Lord dwelleth in Zion.
14:27See you soon ahead
