The Second Epistle to Timothy, commonly known as 2 Timothy, is the sixteenth book of the New Testament and one of Paul’s most personal and emotional letters. Written around AD 66–67, this letter was composed during Paul’s final imprisonment in Rome, shortly before his execution. Unlike his first imprisonment, where he was under house arrest, Paul was now in a cold Roman dungeon, abandoned by many of his companions, awaiting his death. This letter serves as Paul’s farewell message, filled with encouragement, warnings, and final instructions to Timothy, his beloved disciple and spiritual son. It is a letter of perseverance, faithfulness, and endurance in the face of suffering.
Paul begins with a heartfelt greeting, reminding Timothy of his sincere faith, which was passed down from his mother Eunice and grandmother Lois. He encourages Timothy to rekindle the gift of God within him, reminding him that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-discipline. Paul urges Timothy to not be ashamed of the gospel or of Paul’s suffering, but to share in suffering for the sake of Christ, holding firmly to the truth.
A major theme of 2 Timothy is the importance of guarding the gospel. Paul warns Timothy about false teachers, godlessness, and increasing opposition to the truth, urging him to hold on to sound doctrine and to pass it on to faithful men who will teach others. He uses military, athletic, and farming imagery to illustrate the discipline, endurance, and dedication required in Christian ministry.
Paul describes the difficult days ahead, saying that people will become lovers of themselves, greedy, arrogant, disobedient, and lacking self-control. He warns against those who have a form of godliness but deny its power, urging Timothy to stay away from such people. He reminds him that all who desire to live a godly life in Christ will face persecution, but they must remain faithful.
One of the most well-known passages in 2 Timothy emphasizes the authority and power of Scripture. Paul declares that all Scripture is God-breathed and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. He urges Timothy to preach the Word in season and out of season, correcting, rebuking, and encouraging others with great patience and careful instruction.

00:00The Second Epistle of Paul the Apostle to Timothy Chapter 1
00:05Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which
00:12is in Christ Jesus, to Timothy, my dearly beloved son, grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father
00:20and Christ Jesus our Lord. I thank God whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience,
00:27that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers, night and day, greatly desiring to
00:34see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy when I call to remembrance the
00:42unfeigned faith it is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice,
00:49and I am persuaded that in thee also. Wherefore I put thee in remembrance, that thou stir up the
00:56gift of God which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. For God hath not given us the spirit of
01:03fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony
01:10of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner. But be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according
01:18to the power of God, who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works,
01:25but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,
01:33but is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death,
01:41and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, whereunto I am appointed a
01:47preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles. For the which cause I also suffer these
01:55things? Nevertheless I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is
02:04able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day. Hold fast the form of sound words
02:12which thou hast heard of me in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. That good thing which was
02:19committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us. This thou knowest that all they
02:25which are in Asia be turned away from me, of whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes. The Lord give mercy
02:33unto the house of Onesiphorus, for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain. But when he was
02:41in Rome he sought me out very diligently, and found me. The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy
02:50of the Lord in that day, and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus thou knowest very well.
02:57Chapter 2 Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things that
03:07thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same cometh thou to faithful men who shall be able to
03:14teach others also. Thou therefore endure hardness as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No man that warreth
03:23entangleth, entangleth himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who hath chosen
03:29him to be a soldier. And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned except he strive
03:36lawfully. The husbandman that laboreth must be first partaker of the fruits. Consider what I say,
03:44and the Lord give thee understanding in all things. Remember that Jesus Christ, the seed of David,
03:51was raised from the dead according to my gospel, wherein I suffer trouble as an evildoer even unto
03:58bonds, but the word of God is not bound. Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they
04:05may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. It is a faithful saying,
04:13For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him. If we suffer, we shall also reign with him.
04:21If we deny him, he also will deny us. If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful,
04:28he cannot deny himself. Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that
04:35they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers. Study to show thyself
04:42approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth,
04:49but shun profane and vain babblings, for they will increase unto more ungodliness.
04:55And their word will eat as doth a canker, of whom as Hymenaeus and Philetus, who concerning the truth
05:03have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already, and overthrow the faith of some.
05:09Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, the Lord knoweth them that are
05:16his, and let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. But in a great house
05:24there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth, and some to honor,
05:31and some to dishonor. If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto
05:38honors sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work.
05:44Flee also youthful lusts, but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace with them that call on the
05:52Lord out of a pure heart. But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender
05:59strifes. And the servant of the Lord must not strive, but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach,
06:07patient, in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves, if God peradventure will give them
06:13repentance to the acknowledging of the truth, and that they may recover themselves out of the
06:20snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.
06:25Chapter 3
06:27This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come, for men shall be lovers of their
06:35own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without
06:45natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are
06:54good, traitors, heady, high-minded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God, having a form of
07:03godliness, but denying the power thereof, from such turn away. For of this sort are they which creep into
07:12houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers' lusts, ever learning and
07:20never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do
07:27these also resist the truth, men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith. But they shall proceed
07:35no further, for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as theirs also was. But thou hast fully
07:43known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, long-suffering, charity, patience, persecutions,
07:53afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra, what persecutions I endured,
08:01but out of them all the Lord delivered me. Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus
08:08shall suffer persecution. But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving
08:16and being deceived. But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned, and hast been assured of,
08:24knowing of whom thou hast learned them. And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures,
08:30which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All
08:37scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof,
08:45for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be perfect,
08:52throughly furnished unto all good works. Chapter 4
08:57I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead
09:05at his appearing and his kingdom, preach the word. Be instant, in season, out of season. Reprove,
09:14rebuke, exhort with all long-suffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure
09:22sound doctrine, but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers having itching ears,
09:29and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch thou in all
09:36things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.
09:44For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good
09:51fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of
09:59righteousness, which the Lord the righteous judge shall give me at that day, and not to me only,
10:05but unto all them also that love his appearing. Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me. For Demas
10:14hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica, Crescens to Galatia,
10:22Titus unto Dalmatia, only Luke is with me. Take Mark and bring him with thee, for he is profitable
10:31to me for the ministry. And Tychicus have I sent to Ephesus. The cloak that I left at Troas with Carpus,
10:39when thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but especially the parchments. Alexander the coppersmith
10:46did me much evil, the Lord reward him according to his works, of whom be thou aware also, for he
10:54hath greatly withstood our words. At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men forsook me.
11:01I pray, God, that it may not be laid to their charge. Notwithstanding, the Lord stood with me,
11:08and strengthened me. That by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles
11:15might hear. And I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion. And the Lord shall deliver me from
11:22every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom, to whom be glory for ever and
11:29ever. Amen. Salute Priscilla and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus. Erastus abode at Corinth,
11:38but Trophimus have I left it my letum sick. Do thy diligence to come before winter. Eubulus
11:45greeteth thee, and Pudens, and Linus, and Claudia, and all the brethren. The Lord Jesus Christ be with
11:53thy spirit. Grace be with you. Amen.
