Nikki Macqueen, Kindon ICPA, speaks on seatbelts on school buses

The Isolated Children's Parents' Association will continue its lobby for seatbelts on school buses to be made compulsory.

00:00Nicky, you presented a motion on behalf of the Kindon branch regarding seatbelts on school buses.

00:08Do you want to tell us what that was about?

00:10Yes, I did. So the motion that I put forward yesterday was on behalf of Kindon ICPA,

00:16and it was that ICPA Queensland lobbies all relevant bodies for rural and remote school buses

00:23to have compelstery seatbelts fitted.

00:24Our explanation for this was currently Queensland does not require seatbelts to be fitted on school buses.

00:31However, rural and remote school buses travel long distance each day on rough and deteriorating roads,

00:37and they pose a significant safety risk.

00:39To better protect students, it is crucial to implement a policy making seatbelts a standard requirement as soon as possible.

00:46And you had a bit of supporting information for that, didn't you?

00:48We did. One of the members of our community wrote to our Member for Parliament,

00:54Mr. James Lister, who in turn wrote to the Minister for Transport,

00:59and he sent us back a reply, sent back a reply saying that there was no plans to make it mandatory.

01:08Seatbelts on school buses are mandatory.

01:12How do you feel about that?

01:13Well, it's just not good enough. It's not good enough at all.

01:15We're expected to tie our dogs up in the back of utes.

01:23And we have our most precious children on school buses,

01:26and they don't have to have a seatbelt.

01:29It's crazy, and we want to see it changed.
