00:00I read a quote from Othsy Klopp that sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
00:30A few years ago, people were laughing at you. Now, not so much. I mean, he is a titan of industry who has disrupted automotive, aerospace, energy, internet finance.
00:46This is what an Elon Musk hobby looks like.
00:50He's the Thomas Edison of our generation. He's the cool guy in Silicon Valley. The other Silicon Valley guys want to be like Elon Musk, believe me.
01:00He's not just a CEO. Elon's a celebrity.
01:03You're Elon Musk.
01:05I am.
01:08He's shook the halls of power from Beijing to Washington.
01:13Deutschland rocks.
01:15Doing things that would have been regarded as science fiction.
01:19We created Tesla to make a difference in the world. The world desperately needs sustainable transport.
01:25For someone who is saying that they're going to save the world to become the richest person in the world at the same time, you have to be skeptical of what their real priorities are.
01:38This is crazy.
01:40Okay.
01:40Erratic, unstable, reckless, operatic.
01:46Operatic? Eh, it's not bad, actually.
01:489-1-1.
01:51I just ran into a car.
01:52What kind of cars are involved?
01:54The Tesla.
01:56Is he bleeding from anywhere?
01:58He's bleeding from his mouth.
02:01Oh, dear God.
02:02I'm sorry.
02:02I'm sorry.
02:04We'll never get free.
02:06Ma'am to the slaughter.
02:07What you gonna do when there's blood in the water?
02:10The price of your greed is your son and your daughter.
02:13What you gonna do when there's blood in the water?
02:18Look me in my eyes.
02:21Tell me everything's not fine.
02:24Oh, the people ain't happy.
02:27And the river has run dry.
02:30You thought you could go free
02:33But that system is done for
02:36If you listen real closely
02:39There's a knock at your front door
02:42You'll never get free
02:44Man to dislaughter
02:46What you gon' do when there's blood in the water?
02:49The price of your greed is your son and your daughter
02:52What you gon' do when there's blood in the water?
02:57What you gon' do when there's blood in the water?
03:00What you gon' do when there's blood in the water?
03:25How you gon' do when there's blood in the water?
03:28I expect to receive a car that I've just bought
03:31Which is called McLaren F1
03:32There are 62 McLarens in the world
03:37And I will own one of them
03:38It's a million dollars for a car
03:40It's decadent
03:43One thing people forget about Elon Musk is that he didn't start out wanting to save the planet
03:51That's relatively new
03:53He started out wanting to make money and have fun
03:55Elon was born in South Africa and immigrated to the U.S. by way of Canada
04:00When he was a kid, he made a video game and sold that
04:03Elon's got an IQ of about 180
04:06He's had that sort of, you know, brilliant nerd energy that you meet at band camp
04:10Uh, you know, he's still a little bit goofy
04:12Still a little bit gamer
04:15I've got a million dollar car and quite a few creature comforts
04:21It's just the moments in my life
04:23He started one of the very first online banking businesses
04:28X.com
04:29X.com could absolutely be a multi-billion dollar bonanza
04:33This is a great talent of his
04:34It's identifying where the market is going
04:36It's a business magnate skill and he's got it on lock
04:39My fear is that we become spoiled brats
04:41That we lose a sense of appreciation and perspective
04:48Elon merged X.com with some friends of his from the Stanford scene
04:54Including Peter Thiel
04:56After the merged companies had become PayPal
04:59Musk was CEO for a time
05:02And famously, he was fired while he was away on vacation
05:06Despite being dismissed
05:09He retained a huge chunk of shares
05:11And when PayPal was sold to eBay
05:14It was a huge exit for him personally
05:17You sold PayPal to eBay for what?
05:21It was about $1.5 billion
05:23So that was a good outcome
05:28A good outcome?
05:30Yes
05:30And he betted on rocket ships and fast cars
05:34It goes 0 to 60 in about 4 seconds
05:39And it doesn't use an ounce of gasoline
05:43It's the Tesla Roadster
05:47This little baby is the brainchild of Martin Eberhardt
05:52The very happy man behind the wheel
05:54It's time for us to do something about our dependence on foreign oil
05:58It's time for us to do something about global warming
06:00But I wasn't ready to go drive around in some goofy little car
06:04Eberhardt
06:06Eberhardt teamed up with another internet millionaire, Elon Musk
06:09You put in about $27 million?
06:11More than that actually
06:1337 as of the
06:1537 as of this airing
06:19As of last week, yeah
06:20Martin Eberhardt and Mark Tarpening were the forgotten founders of Tesla
06:27And the inventors of the battery pack that is really the core technology of Tesla to this day
06:32Martin was the face and the voice of the brand initially
06:36But Martin and Elon did not get along
06:40Who gets car number one, you or Martin?
06:43Well, I get car number one
06:44I guess there's some advantages to investing $37 million in the company
06:49He bought the company thinking it would be fun
06:53And he got in way deep
06:54And he was frustrated with the original guys
06:57Those guys didn't have any juice that Elon needed
07:01When the New York Times wrote about Martin and Mark and not Elon
07:06Elon got furious
07:08He felt denigrated by being excluded
07:11And similar to what happened with Elon and PayPal
07:15While Martin was off on vacation
07:18The board voted him off
07:20It was pretty getting him out
07:23They did not want to build the company that Elon eventually built
07:27But once he did get those original guys to step aside
07:32The company moved forward
07:33Elon Musk is the one who figured out the way to sell electric cars
07:42Is to use the electric powertrain to make them exciting
07:46Not to make cars that don't use gas
07:50That save you gas money
07:51But to make them really cool and fun to drive
07:54It's so appealing to think you can buy yourself a nice car
08:03To save the planet
08:05So there was so much demand and public support for Tesla
08:10From tech car people and from environmentalists
08:13Hey Greg, the key fell apart
08:19But in the face of all that demand
08:22Tesla had delay after delay after delay
08:25This is one of the cars we rejected for
08:27Holy mackerel, Jesus
08:29Yeah, like we have like an army of cars here
08:34Like, Jesus
08:36I'm looking like we're going to be able to deliver four cars to the sales team
08:40This is frightening
08:41The costs keep going up and up and up
08:43And the delays keep racking up
08:46You know, this was their first car they were getting into production
08:50And it felt damning
08:52We need to get the company to cash flow positive in six to nine months
08:58Well, we're screwed
08:58It's really pedal to the metal here
09:01Like, I mean, you know, each month that passes
09:05Is literally, costs us tens of millions of dollars
09:09I mean, we need to appreciate that
09:10I want names named
09:14So if someone's always on the high seat
09:17And is always the root cause for problems
09:20They will not be part of this organization long term
09:22And so if somebody can't get happy, get divorced
09:26Right, exactly
09:27Yeah, exactly
09:31Speaking from personal experience
09:33So Martin and Mark had sketched out this idea
09:39For an electric vehicle company
09:41That would start with a high-end roadster
09:43Which costs a lot
09:44And then you go to another luxury vehicle
09:46But maybe it's not as niche a market
09:48And after that, you go down the line
09:51Until they can make more and more affordable cars
09:53A lot of that became part of what Elon called his master plan
09:57The goal of Tesla from the beginning
09:59Has always been to go to mass market
10:01And to make electric cars that everyone can afford
10:04The new model, the S-Sport sedan
10:07Is expected to have a sticker price
10:10About half the roadster
10:11Backed by a just-denounced
10:13Nearly half-billion-dollar U.S. government loan
10:15There was so much skepticism
10:18That they'd be able to become the real car company
10:20They were too high risk to raise money from banks
10:23At the time, the federal government
10:26Wanted to support clean tech
10:28So they were able to get a loan
10:31From the Department of Energy
10:33And it was a lifeline for them
10:35When I was working for the Los Angeles Times
10:42Elon took the time to show me
10:44The very early prototype of Model S
10:47I wrote a story saying
10:50That it was a zillion miles from production
10:54And it was very unlikely
10:56That Elon would meet
10:58His much-Ballyhooed personal deadline
11:00Of getting the car out by 2012
11:02Some of that history was
11:05In a documentary called
11:07The Revenge of the Electric Car
11:08Behind the scenes
11:11The Model S prototype
11:13Isn't quite ready
11:14Oh, Elon's gonna lose his shirt
11:24Yeah, Elon's gonna get crushed
11:27But then a funny thing happened
11:32On the way to Calamity
11:34He managed to build the cars
11:36Ladies and gentlemen
11:37Mr. Elon Musk
11:39And when people got a load
11:40Of the genius that is Tesla
11:42They were like
11:43We want one of these
11:44This is cool as hell
11:45They're gonna make it as expensive
11:47As they wanted
11:48Because people would pay for it
11:50And since that time
11:52I have never found a reason
11:55To doubt Elon
11:56We have a revolution to fight you here
11:58And we need your help
11:59To win that resolution
12:00One, two, three
12:01Tesla
12:02Let him go
12:06Motor Trend
12:08Naming Tesla's Model S
12:09It's Car of the Year
12:10It's the first time
12:11That an electric car
12:12Has ever won the award
12:13Battery-powered
12:14All-electric
12:15Unlike a lot of
12:16Previous electric cars
12:18The Tesla goes like a rocket
12:20With Model S
12:21Tesla established itself
12:23With critics
12:24There was a Tesla community
12:26Coming together
12:26Just like the fan base
12:28Was forming
12:28It's kind of like
12:32This underground secret
12:33Nerd cool kids club
12:35If you have a Tesla
12:36You probably know what I mean
12:37I got $100
12:39In Elon bucks
12:40Right here
12:41Life is just so much better
12:42In this car
12:43Like I am so happy right now
12:44I literally forgot
12:45That I'm negative in my bank
12:46I have unlimited money
12:48To blow on Teslas
12:49I mean I'll just get
12:50A new Tesla every time
12:51This is the thing
12:52That makes Elon
12:53Different from other
12:54American innovators
12:56And entrepreneurs
12:56Is the ability
12:57To inspire capital
13:00Well big losses
13:01On Wall Street today
13:02Except Tesla Motors
13:04They're making their debut
13:05On the Nasdaq
13:07Now the company
13:08Has yet to make a profit
13:10Even for a single quarter
13:11But that didn't stop
13:12Investors handing over
13:14More than $220 million
13:16It's the first public listing
13:18Of a carmaker
13:19Since Fours
13:20Back in 1956
13:22Tesla's unusual
13:24In that they use
13:25The stock price
13:26As such an integral part
13:28Of its brand identity
13:30The fact that the stock
13:31Goes up and up and up
13:33Is part of what convinces people
13:36To buy their cars
13:37And believe in their technology
13:39Which is important
13:40Because they have needed
13:42To raise capital a lot
13:43Over their history
13:44For all the support
13:50Tesla drummed up
13:51From the federal government
13:52From the state of California
13:53From its customers
13:55In 2018
13:56They were burning cash
13:58They were moving into
14:00This massive car assembly plant
14:03In Fremont, California
14:04So their next step
14:07Was going to be
14:08To come out
14:08With a more affordable car
14:09If they could produce
14:11Electric vehicles
14:12At a high volume now
14:13Maybe spending all that cash
14:15Was worth it
14:16The major challenge for us
14:18Over the next
14:19Six to nine months
14:20Is how do we build
14:22A huge number of cars
14:23The
14:24I mean
14:27And frankly
14:28We're going to be
14:28In production hell
14:29Welcome
14:31Welcome
14:32Welcome to production hell
14:35I was excited
14:40To work for Tesla
14:41It was a new company
14:44Their mission statement
14:45Caught my attention
14:46Car of the future
14:49That's what brought me
14:51To that company
14:53When I got hired
14:55You have
14:56Two or three day orientation
14:57And they do a very good job
15:00Of hyping you up
15:01You know what I'm saying
15:02It's a great place to work
15:04Everybody's smiling
15:05Everybody's happy
15:06They took me through the factory
15:12And I got to see
15:13Pretty much the whole
15:14Assembly line
15:15And
15:16They made a point
15:17That they want to do things
15:19Differently
15:20Not the way
15:20A traditional auto
15:21Company operates
15:23His vision was to
15:27Automate everything
15:28They were trying to run
15:30The robots in the assembly line
15:32At faster rates
15:33Than they were supposed
15:34To operate
15:3570 jobs per hour
15:38Instead of 60 or 50
15:40They were intentionally
15:42Pushing them beyond their limits
15:44For example
15:46In the paint shop
15:47They had a sensor
15:49That would shut down
15:49The process
15:50Because it was going too fast
15:51And their solution
15:52Was to have somebody
15:53Sit there with a chair
15:54And hit reset
15:55Every time it shut down
15:57So they could just keep
15:58Going faster
15:59That's an interesting exercise
16:05I don't know that's the best way
16:07To make cars though
16:09I wrote a series of stories
16:12About multiple fires
16:14In Tesla's paint shop
16:15The paint machines
16:17These sprayer robotics
16:18Getting backed up
16:20Which led to fires
16:21And it terrified the workers
16:24Elon assumes
16:28That everything the auto industry
16:29Does is dumb and wrong
16:32But auto companies
16:34That have been around
16:35For a hundred years
16:36Know there are certain things
16:38That robots are really good at
16:40And there are certain things
16:40That it's much better
16:41To just have humans do
16:42And they ended up
16:44Taking out a lot of machinery
16:46From the production line
16:48And putting in human workers
16:50Because they needed to make
16:52Thousands of these cars a month
16:54And they were struggling
16:55To get there
16:56We had a quota to hit
17:00So there was a period of time
17:02Where Elon would eliminate welds
17:03For example you had a door
17:05That would
17:05That have 60 welds
17:07Okay let's eliminate 5 welds
17:09You would save
17:09Let's say 5 seconds
17:11That kind of shoddy work
17:13It showed up in service
17:14It showed up in customers' cars
17:16Model 3, Model Y, Model S
17:18Had a lot of service issues
17:20That's a Tesla
17:20That is a Tesla
17:23There have been battery fires
17:25There was a couple
17:26That owned two Teslas
17:26And both of them caught fire
17:28In their garage
17:28Tesla had a problem
17:30With the rear bumper falling off
17:32Especially in the rain
17:33Employees have said
17:36That we're trying to make
17:36The cars perfectly to the specs
17:38But we don't really have
17:39Enough time
17:40If we want to hit
17:41These production numbers
17:42We're taking shortcuts
17:43Manufacturing engineers
17:44Were telling him
17:45No we shouldn't focus on this
17:46And he would override decisions
17:48It was Elon's way or the highway
17:50There were a lot of upset employees
17:57And I talked to a great deal of them
17:59You kind of have to filter
18:02What an angry person says
18:04But what does not lie
18:06Calls that were coming out of the factory
18:09It was a dangerous place
18:12Security, can we get EMS out here?
18:14Sure, what's going on?
18:15We have a 62-year-old male associate
18:17Who's angle was struck by a forklift
18:19And is currently bleeding
18:20We have a male unknown age
18:23He has a severe hand crush injury
18:25I don't know how many people
18:29Got hurt every day at Tesla
18:30It's really hard to know
18:32I have broken news
18:36About all kinds of weird things
18:37Going on there
18:38Including people dying
18:39I feel like we should just station
18:42One of our deputies here
18:44Tesla created another factory in Nevada
18:51To make battery modules
18:53And government officials
18:56Let the Tesla factory exist
18:59In this kind of lawless
19:00County for us situation
19:04Because Nevada wanted it
19:07And it was the promise of
19:0910,000 jobs, right?
19:11I mean, what state
19:13Doesn't want to see that happen
19:14We are here on site
19:15To serve a warrant
19:17Okay
19:19You know, the warrant needs
19:21On Rob's hands right now
19:22Okay
19:24Yesenia, you guys
19:26Want me to go inside
19:28And kind of talk through
19:30What the next steps are?
19:31Bring Alberto's deputy
19:33Hammond
19:33Deputy Hammond
19:34I don't think we need
19:36I don't think we need
19:37To bring him inside
19:38But why do we
19:39Is it possible
19:40That they can be here
19:41If I don't need
19:41The U.S.
19:42Occupational safety
19:43And hazard administration
19:44It's supposed to make sure
19:46That work sites
19:47Are safe for workers
19:49They're supposed to be
19:50Let in to do checks
19:52So OSHA showed up
19:54In February
19:54To do an inspection
19:55During the process
19:58Tesla decided
19:59To kick him off
20:00And tell him
20:00To come back
20:01With a warrant
20:01So today
20:03They're here with a warrant
20:04You can't delay
20:07Our inspection
20:07It's a warrant
20:08Tesla was
20:10Tesla was
20:10Literally telling OSHA
20:12They couldn't come in
20:12And inspect
20:13Even the public record
20:14Shows Gigafactory
20:15Was unsafe
20:16There were
20:17There were two amputations
20:19Within hours
20:19Of each other
20:20People lost their fingers
20:22At the same exact part
20:23Of you know
20:25Battery pack production
20:26I mean anywhere else man
20:27This guy would go to jail
20:28Like if I was
20:33To serve a warrant
20:33To you at your house
20:34And you denied an entry
20:35You simply go to jail
20:36For attempted court
20:38You would think
20:39That would be the same here
20:40Back in Fremont
20:42Tesla was sending
20:44Injured workers
20:45To the hospital
20:47In like ride share cars
20:49Like a Lyft
20:50Or an Uber
20:51Or something
20:51Because they were
20:52Trying to hide
20:53From the public record
20:54Incidents where they
20:55Had to call an ambulance
20:56Employees have suffered
20:58A myriad of back
21:00Hand and arm strains
21:01Bruises
21:02Lacerations
21:03Punctures
21:03Fractures and burns
21:04Tesla's fines
21:06For safety violations
21:07In the past five years
21:08Surpassed
21:09Ten other
21:10Major US auto plants
21:11Combined
21:12Overtime was mandatory
21:15We were working
21:1612, 13, 14 hours a day
21:18There was a time
21:19Where we had to push
21:20A lot of cars out
21:22Because Elon was promising
21:23That we had to
21:24Meet a certain quota
21:25So we worked
21:2630 days straight
21:27In December
21:28And that was
21:30That was hard on everybody
21:3130 days straight
21:33I knew a lot of people
21:35That slept in the parking lot
21:36You know
21:37They didn't have the money
21:37You know
21:38For gas
21:38We had a lot of safety issues
21:42But if it had
21:44To do with stopping the line
21:45And trying to fix something
21:46They wouldn't really pay attention
21:47We lifted a lot of heavy parts
21:50You know
21:5050, 100 times a day
21:52I ended up getting hurt
21:54I ended up having surgery
21:56At that time
21:58About six people
21:59Out of eight
21:59In my team
22:00In my group
22:01Were out on micro relief
22:02Because they
22:03They just keep getting hurt
22:04That's what pushed me
22:06To say
22:07We need a voice
22:07Here at Tesla
22:08We started
22:17Standing in front of
22:19The Tesla building
22:20Passing out flyers
22:22Literature
22:23You know
22:23The pros of having a union
22:25We had a lot of security
22:27Going up to us
22:29Asking for our badge
22:30I was written up
22:31I was disciplined
22:32I was given a warning
22:33For union activity
22:34A lot of other
22:35Supporters got fired
22:37But there was a lot of
22:38Anti-union propaganda
22:40An awfully threatening
22:41Workers on Twitter
22:42About their stock options
22:44There are charges
22:46Of unreported injuries
22:48Excessive hours
22:49Abusive conditions
22:51Well
22:51It's important to emphasize
22:53That there's been
22:53An aggressive campaign
22:54By the UAW
22:55To absolutely
22:57Attack Tesla
22:58With a load of nonsense
23:00In order to
23:02Try to unionize the company
23:04So you think
23:05They drummed up
23:05These charges
23:06Yes
23:06These are
23:07Outer nonsense
23:09Well
23:09There are
23:10Several investigations
23:12By the press
23:13And by regulators
23:14In California
23:15About injuries
23:17On the job
23:17Breathing toxic
23:19Fumes
23:20Stress injuries
23:21Over a hundred
23:22Ambulance calls
23:23I don't think
23:25That's correct
23:26I mean
23:28I was literally
23:28Living in the factory
23:29If these
23:31If there's like
23:31Toxic fumes
23:32I'm breathing them
23:33Okay
23:34In the early years
23:38Of Tesla
23:38There were a lot
23:39Of naysayers
23:41Haters
23:41The auto industry
23:42Was really keen
23:43For people
23:44To be so anxious
23:45That they wouldn't
23:46Even try an EV
23:47There were campaigns
23:49Against electric vehicles
23:51That paranoia
23:52Was not totally
23:53Unfounded
23:54But
23:55Yeah
23:57He was
23:57Fighting dirty
23:58You think a guy
24:00Who's
24:00Trying to fight
24:01Climate change
24:02And save the world
24:03Would be
24:05Sympathetic
24:06To the plight
24:07Of the worker
24:08My reporting
24:10My reporting indicates
24:11That the mission
24:12Of Tesla
24:12Is not in line
24:14With the manufacturing
24:15Of Tesla
24:16Elon Musk
24:17Has for years
24:18Promised
24:19A high quality car
24:20That is environmentally friendly
24:22And what we're seeing
24:23Coming out
24:24Of both Tesla factories
24:26Is not
24:27Exactly that
24:28Now we're presuming
24:29Some of your reporting
24:30Came from this whistleblower
24:31From Tesla
24:32By the name of
24:33Martin Tripp
24:33That's right
24:34Martin Tripp
24:39Is a gentleman
24:41Who worked
24:41On Tesla's
24:42Factory floor
24:43Mostly in quality control
24:45During the spring
24:48And summer
24:49Of 2018
24:50Marty is one
24:52Of those people
24:53Who really believed
24:55In Tesla's mission
24:56Really believed
24:57That the company
24:58Was going to change
24:59The world
25:00And at first
25:01Believed
25:02That any problem
25:03That he reported
25:04To Elon
25:04Would be dealt
25:06With sincerely
25:07Elon would send
25:08Emails to the staff
25:10If you have a problem
25:11Email me directly
25:12And Marty did
25:14Email Elon
25:15At the time
25:18Tesla didn't really
25:19Have a recycling process
25:20In place
25:21And in the first
25:23Half of that year
25:24The company
25:25Blew through
25:26About 150 million
25:27Dollars
25:27Worth of scrap waste
25:29And Elon
25:30Actually responded
25:31Saying you're right
25:32We have a major
25:33Scrap problem
25:34But I don't think
25:36Elon realized that
25:37Marty was feeling
25:38So unheard
25:39That he was willing
25:40To go to the press
25:41I got an email
25:45From Martin Tripp
25:45So I wrote the story
25:47And I mean
25:51It was bedlam
25:52Elon was hyper paranoid
25:57Because the Model 3 launch
26:00Was going so much
26:00More slowly
26:01Than he thought
26:01He made sure
26:03That the company
26:05Was focused
26:05On finding
26:06This leaker
26:06And not only
26:08Did he brand
26:09The person a leaker
26:11He insisted
26:12That they were a saboteur
26:13That they were trying
26:14To take down Tesla
26:15Tesla went through
26:18Thousands and thousands
26:20Of thousands
26:21Of company searches
26:22And it took him
26:23Weeks to find Martin
26:25They were following him
26:27They hacked into his phone
26:30Tesla had pictures
26:32Of his kids
26:32In their database
26:33They questioned him
26:36For two days
26:37Story David 13
26:38A warning
26:40Was called in
26:42To one of Tesla's
26:43Customer lines
26:44That Martin Tripp
26:47Was going to the factory
26:49With a gun
26:49So the police
26:51Found Martin
26:52Go ahead and turn around
26:53For me real quick
26:53Alright go ahead
26:54Put your hands
26:55On your back
26:55You're not under arrest
26:56Just checking
26:57You're for weapons
26:57Okay
26:57As Martin understood it
27:08Elon was extremely involved
27:11In everything
27:14That happened to him
27:15From the moment
27:16His identity
27:17Was revealed
27:18As the person
27:19Who was leaking
27:19To me
27:20And it was Elon
27:22Who created
27:24A no holds barred
27:26We take this guy down
27:28Environment
27:29At the company
27:30You had no inclination
27:34Obviously
27:35Of going out there
27:36Absolutely not
27:37Absolutely not
27:38And shooting up
27:38The place
27:39Absolutely not
27:39The fact was though
27:41That Martin
27:42Violated his NDA
27:43And everyone
27:44Who works at Tesla
27:45Signs an NDA
27:46Tesla then sued
27:48Marty for trying
27:50To destroy
27:50The entire company
27:51This is sort of strange
27:52It's almost like
27:53A movie
27:53That's what I told
27:55My wife
27:56He was an hourly
27:57Employee
27:58Who worked on
27:59The factory line
27:59And he was just
28:02Trying to do his best
28:02When I came out
28:04With real numbers
28:05And millions of dollars
28:07Hundreds of millions
28:08Of dollars
28:08Of scrap
28:09And lost
28:10And this is part
28:12Of my job
28:12I was tasked
28:13With like inventory
28:14Elon was trying
28:16To use a nuclear bomb
28:18To crush an ant
28:19I don't want my son
28:20Taken away
28:21Because they're making
28:22Accusations
28:22I'm just
28:23I'm really freaking
28:25So Martin Tripp
28:26Who was a line worker
28:28At the Tesla factory
28:30Making 20 some
28:31Whatever dollars
28:32An hour
28:32Has to pay
28:33The richest man
28:34In the world
28:35Because
28:36He told a reporter
28:38That Tesla
28:39Wasn't recycling
28:40I'm 40 years old
28:42My wife and I
28:42Wanted to retire
28:43So we've been
28:44Saving like
28:45Every penny
28:45I just think
28:47It sucks that
28:47I trust you
28:48Like they can
28:49Save anything
28:49They want now
28:50All I can tell you
28:52Is hang in there
28:53And
28:53Elon only punches down
28:57And
28:58He punches
28:59Really
29:00Really hard
29:01Some people say
29:08Elon was bullied
29:09When he was a kid
29:10This is what
29:12Makes him
29:13Lash out so much
29:14To people
29:15Who are critical
29:16Of him
29:17Or critical of Tesla
29:17This feeling
29:19Of being attacked
29:20I think it comes
29:21From narcissism
29:23He doesn't like
29:24To be questioned
29:24He knows
29:26That the story
29:27Of Tesla
29:27For the last
29:2918 years
29:29Was its main
29:30Product
29:31And so anybody
29:32Who attacked
29:34That story
29:34Was an existential
29:36Threat to the company
29:37Spring
29:40To fall
29:41Of 2018
29:42Was Elon Musk's
29:44Craziest season
29:47There was this
29:48One moment
29:49Where Elon tweeted
29:50A photo of himself
29:52Sacked out
29:53With a bottle
29:53Of tequila
29:54That wasn't
29:55That much
29:55Of a joke
29:55His fans
29:58Arranged to go
29:59Fund me
30:00To send him
30:00A couch
30:01To sleep on
30:01At the factory
30:02Because reports
30:03Surfaced
30:03That he was
30:04Sleeping on
30:04The factory floor
30:05Sort of for show
30:06But like
30:06I think also
30:08Out of stress
30:09No one should
30:11No one should
30:11Put this many hours
30:14Into work
30:15This is not good
30:17People should not
30:20Work this hard
30:20They should not do this
30:22This is very painful
30:23Publicly
30:29He was cracking jokes
30:30About it
30:31And trying to make it
30:32All just
30:32Almost ironic
30:33And humor
30:35And humor would
30:36Assuage a certain
30:38Number of fans
30:39Did people get upset
30:40At you if you
30:41Do certain things
30:42Around this time
30:47Elon got into trouble
30:48With financial regulators
30:50And he tweeted this
30:51Can you beep this part
30:53Yes
30:54Okay
30:54It's pretty clear
30:55He was saying
30:56Suck Elon's
30:57Who kicks the beehive
30:59Like that
30:59Why are you doing this
31:01It's all personal branding
31:03Sometimes it's a little
31:05Edgelord
31:06But I think it helps him
31:08Whip up the fan base
31:09You know
31:10The government
31:11The regulators
31:12Are the bad guys
31:13Not you Elon
31:13It's advertising
31:16It's promotion
31:18It's myth making
31:20He's got to
31:20Get the word out
31:21And he's got to
31:22Keep moving the needle
31:23There are a lot
31:26Of fanboys
31:26They believe in Elon
31:28They believe in his mission
31:30A lot of them
31:31Actually call him
31:32A prophet
31:33On Twitter
31:34There are great fans
31:37There are sort of
31:37Toxic Tesla stans
31:39The toxic element
31:41Is small but mighty
31:42They love to bash reporters
31:44Sort of like Elon
31:45Loves to bash reporters
31:46I'm just really frustrated
31:48With the media
31:49Not
31:49The media is not the media
31:51Like the media
31:51Isn't telling you the truth
31:53This to me
31:55Is the je ne sais quoi
31:55Of Tesla
31:56This is what people
31:56Don't understand
31:57Like when you're a customer
31:58And you're on the other side
31:59Like you know
32:00Nothing else matters
32:01Even the slightest
32:03Bit of criticism
32:05Or any story
32:06That hints
32:07At some negative thing
32:09Tesla might be doing
32:10And you get this
32:11Vociferous blowback
32:13I think it's fair
32:14To call them
32:15Kind of a cult-like following
32:16November 2019
32:20The sky is polluted
32:22The world is addicted to oil
32:24But we're here
32:26To offer a solution
32:27The cyber truck
32:29The number one
32:31World transport
32:32For a cyber girl
32:34The greatest evolution
32:36In vehicular
32:37Action
32:38And function
32:39I now present to you
32:42My creator
32:43If Elon Musk is a religion
32:52Then the congregation
32:54Comes together
32:55Every time the company
32:58Launches a new model
32:59Tesla sets up the stage
33:02And the fanboys come
33:03And some of the press
33:05Is invited
33:05I'm never invited
33:06And you get to watch
33:08Elon present this new
33:10Cool thing
33:11That he is working on
33:12Welcome to the
33:13Cybertruck unveil
33:15We created an exoskeleton
33:17Nice
33:24Now I have the Cybertruck
33:26When it comes to this
33:33Cybertruck
33:34Everybody was hyped
33:36About this car
33:37And Elon was like
33:38Look you can take this to war
33:40Franz could you try
33:41To break this glass please
33:42Everything about it
33:46Is indestructible
33:47Even the windows
33:48Sure
33:50Yeah
33:51Oh my fucking god
33:55Well
33:55Maybe that was a little too hard
33:58With Elon
34:01Sometimes the new cool thing
34:02Is a real thing
34:03Sometimes it's not a real thing
34:05Sometimes it's coming soon
34:07Sometimes it's never gonna show up
34:09It didn't go through
34:10So that's a plus side
34:12Let's try the right one
34:13Try that one really
34:13Okay
34:14Sure
34:15Oh man
34:18It didn't go through
34:18Alright
34:22Yeah not bad
34:26Yeah on Wall Street
34:28We call that a pump
34:29The Cybertruck
34:31The Cybertruck was unveiled
34:31At a time
34:33When Tesla's stock price
34:34Was not great
34:35People were starting
34:36To have doubts
34:37About the company
34:37And that has happened
34:39Several times
34:39In Tesla's history
34:40Let's move to Tesla
34:42Which is now being labeled
34:43A cash incinerator
34:45Particularly as it prepares
34:46To link up with its sister
34:47Cash burner
34:48SolarCity
34:49By 2016
34:51SolarCity
34:52Was set for bankruptcy
34:54And
34:55Elon had been paving the way
34:57For Tesla investors
34:58To maybe be open
34:59To
35:00Bring in it under the tent
35:02It's just a cute
35:04House from
35:05Desperate Housewives
35:06Or something
35:06What the
35:07What on earth is going on here
35:09That house roof
35:10Is a solar roof
35:11So that's an actual
35:12Solar glass roof
35:13Okay
35:14So those
35:14That's a picture
35:15Of a real
35:16Well admittedly
35:17It's a real fake house
35:18That's a real fake house
35:20What was implied
35:25Is that this thing
35:25Already works
35:26It's a production
35:27Prototype
35:28We're ready to make it
35:29Turns out
35:31It was just a prop
35:32That was all
35:33To get Tesla's investors
35:35To approve
35:36A takeover
35:37Of SolarCity
35:37His cousin
35:38Was the CEO
35:39There were
35:40Financial ties
35:41Between SolarCity
35:42And SpaceX
35:43The entanglements
35:46Between his businesses
35:47Are really profound
35:49And really unusual
35:50If SolarCity went down
35:52Elon was going to have
35:53A lot of trouble
35:55So he just lied
35:56Solar roofs
35:57Last longer
35:58Have better insulation
35:59If all those things
36:01Are true
36:02Why would you go
36:02Any other direction
36:03It rescued his family's wealth
36:06It rescued some of his money too
36:08But yeah
36:09It was just a prop
36:10And a lot of people
36:11In that solar industry
36:13Started wondering
36:13If Elon was a little bit
36:15Of a flim flim man
36:16Just like some
36:16P.T. Barnum thing
36:17Later it came out
36:20That they were having
36:20Problems with fires
36:21Where they had installed
36:23Solar panels
36:23I mean he scammed
36:26The people of New York
36:27Out of close to
36:28A billion dollars
36:29To take over a factory
36:30And make all these jobs
36:31That have never materialized
36:33But on Wall Street
36:35People jump on bandwagons
36:37And they like good stories
36:39It's a mania
36:40It's a mania
36:40Like I've not seen
36:41Since the late 90s
36:43Tesla now bigger
36:44Than IBM
36:46It is bigger than
36:47American Express
36:48Bigger than Starbucks
36:48Bigger than Goldman Sachs
36:50The stock is priced
36:52Like Elon
36:53Just invented flying cars
36:55To rationalize the stock price
36:57Tesla would have to be
36:58Selling more cars
36:59Than any other car company
37:00On the planet
37:00Is it?
37:02No
37:02So it is extremely important
37:05To keep the stock price up
37:07So that it can continue
37:08Borrowing money from Wall Street
37:09To stay afloat
37:10Your stock went up
37:12Elon
37:13By something like
37:148-9%
37:15Just based on that tweet alone
37:17You earned about
37:17Three billion dollars
37:19In market cap on that
37:20Is that a surprise to you?
37:22Yes
37:23I mean that seems like
37:24An unlikely thing to happen
37:26Just based on a tweet
37:27But
37:28I don't know
37:30Maybe
37:30I don't know
37:31Yeah
37:32Maybe it's surprising
37:33He has this unprecedented
37:36CEO compensation plan
37:38And
37:39So much of that
37:40Was about
37:41The stock price
37:42It's an obscene amount
37:45Of money
37:46Given the fact
37:46That his auto workers
37:47Are some of the worst
37:48Paid in the industry
37:49So
37:51The more he pumps
37:52The better he does
37:53Not just for the company
37:55But personally for himself
37:56Whether or not
37:59He is pumping
38:00The stock
38:01Is kind of
38:02Over my pay grade
38:04Elon played the game
38:06That he found
38:07The biggest billionaires
38:08In America
38:09Work the system
38:10To pay nothing
38:11In income tax
38:12Do the ultra rich
38:14Operate with impunity
38:15On these matters?
38:17Yeah they do
38:18They totally do
38:21Rich begets rich
38:22You know
38:23Elon's the richest man
38:25In the world
38:25That gives him
38:26A lot of leverage
38:27Elon Musk
38:30Is an amazing salesman
38:31He believes
38:32In the promises
38:34That he's making
38:35I just think
38:36That he falls
38:38Into the trap
38:39That many people
38:39In Silicon Valley
38:40Fall into
38:41Called the
38:41Fake it till you make it trap
38:43I've just got to make
38:44Some promises
38:45Long enough
38:46Until the technology
38:47Gets there
38:48And then these promises
38:49Will come true
38:50And we're starting
38:53To see
38:53Immature and inappropriate
38:55Roll out
38:56Of technologies
38:57Like autopilot
38:59And full self-driving
39:00All right
39:02Here we go
39:02All right
39:03All right
39:04Wow
39:08It's on full autopilot
39:09Right now
39:10I'm not touching anything
39:11No hands
39:12No feet
39:13Nothing
39:13My lab is
39:15The humans and autonomy lab
39:16So my research focuses
39:18On when you have
39:20Imperfect autonomy
39:21Which all cars do
39:22How should you communicate
39:24With the human
39:24In your car
39:25What is technology
39:26What
39:27What
39:28Nope
39:30Nope
39:30That's why
39:31Slow down boy
39:32Slow down you boy
39:33All of Silicon Valley
39:34Is trying to get
39:35To an autonomous car
39:36When you can lay back
39:38Close your eyes
39:39And let your car drive you
39:40That's a level five
39:42We will have
39:43The basic functionality
39:45For level five
39:45Autonomy
39:46Complete this year
39:47Level five is
39:49I'm gonna
39:49Send a car
39:50On my phone
39:51And have it
39:52Take me to Vegas
39:53While I'm sleeping
39:53In the back
39:54Not in my lifetime
39:56There's no car today
40:01Where you should
40:03Actually be hands free
40:04The instant you tell somebody
40:06You can be hands free
40:07People equate that
40:08With mind free
40:09Perception systems today
40:14Are incredibly brittle
40:15They will fail
40:17In very unexpected ways
40:19This is it
40:21The great
40:23FSD monorail test
40:24Every researcher
40:26Who's doing anything
40:27In AI
40:28And transportation systems
40:29Get surprised
40:30Almost every day
40:31I don't know
40:33Should I not
40:34Have disengaged there
40:35No
40:35It was gonna go
40:36Straight into the pillar
40:37Right
40:38But I thought
40:38It sees the pillar
40:39And if we're still
40:40Being surprised
40:41To this degree
40:41Maybe it's not ready
40:43For deployment
40:43The car
40:44I am taking over
40:47Like I'm trying
40:49This quote unquote
40:51Feature
40:51That they have
40:53Cost $10,000
40:54And when they have
40:56To talk to
40:56California regulators
40:57They admit
40:58They're not even close
41:00And don't know
41:01If they ever will be
41:03And okay
41:04Did
41:04Oh god
41:05Fuck
41:06Jesus
41:07In early 2016
41:13A former student of mine
41:16Who worked
41:16At Tesla
41:17Asked me to come
41:18Give a talk
41:19I think he was hoping
41:22That I would
41:24Kind of wake them up
41:26To the realities
41:27Of what was about
41:28To happen
41:28How did they respond
41:30To the talk
41:31She doesn't really
41:36Know anything
41:36I think
41:40Autopilot's
41:41Getting good enough
41:42That you won't
41:42Need to
41:43Drive most of the time
41:44Well
41:44That's the other
41:45Thing too
41:46That has games
41:46Like you can
41:48Play chess
41:48Yeah you can
41:49Play chess
41:50We got
41:51We got the
41:51Backgammon
41:53This is not
41:53Something you can
41:54Play while you're
41:55Driving
41:55Well I mean
41:57You're not
41:57Supposed to
41:58Play while you're
41:58That would be
41:59Illegal
42:00But will it
42:01Work while
42:02You're on autopilot
42:03Well you have to
42:04Tap a button
42:05That says you're
42:05The passenger
42:05You know somebody
42:09Who's a Tesla
42:10Enthusiast
42:11A Tesla fan
42:12Will hear that
42:13And what do they
42:13Think
42:13It's really
42:14Close
42:15They don't
42:17Think
42:17I gotta be
42:19Cautious with
42:20This
42:20Because if I
42:22Let myself
42:23Not pay
42:23Attention
42:24I could kill
42:26Myself
42:26Here we are
42:28Stop and go
42:29Traffic
42:29On 271
42:31And
42:31Ah geez
42:32Car's doing
42:33It all
42:34Itself
42:34I don't know
42:35What I'm gonna
42:35Do with my
42:35Hands down
42:36Here
42:36Joshua Brown
42:40He was from
42:40Ohio
42:41Former Navy
42:42Seal
42:43Bought a Tesla
42:44He was very
42:44Enthusiastic about
42:45It
42:46He was driving
42:47On a highway
42:48And he had
42:49Set autopilot
42:50And just had his
42:53Hand on the wheel
42:53A few seconds
42:54Here and there
42:55And this tractor
42:57Trailer was
42:57Crossing the roadway
42:59Autopilot
43:01Didn't recognize it
43:02Didn't see it
43:02Didn't stop
43:03And it
43:05Sheared off the
43:06Top of the Tesla
43:08The Tesla
43:10Didn't slow down
43:11At all
43:12Just blew
43:13Through it
43:13At high speed
43:15In most of the
43:17Cases that I've
43:17Looked into
43:18Crashes that I've
43:19Looked into
43:19Tesla's response
43:20Was well
43:21The driver
43:22Should have been
43:22Paying attention
43:23We tell people
43:24To pay attention
43:25The National
43:27Transportation Safety
43:28Board did a
43:29In-depth investigation
43:31And their
43:31Conclusions were
43:32Autopilot lacks
43:34These safeguards
43:34To prevent misuse
43:36In other words
43:37Keeping your hands
43:38Off the steering
43:39Wheel for a long
43:40Period of time
43:40Not keeping your
43:41Eyes on the road
43:42Being able to
43:43Use it on roads
43:44Where it's
43:45Inappropriate
43:46Joshua Brown
43:47Died in 2016
43:49So Tesla's known
43:51About that for
43:52Five years
43:52Just the basics
43:55Of auto safety
43:56The most basic
43:57Thing is seeing
43:58An object and
43:58Stopping for an
43:59Object and not
44:00Running into it
44:00There are
44:02Accidents have
44:02Happened where
44:03Autopilot was
44:04Unable to do
44:04That most basic
44:05Thing
44:069-1-1
44:12Hello
44:14I don't know
44:15What happened
44:16I ended up
44:17Missing the turn
44:18I was looking
44:18Down
44:19And I don't know
44:20If I hit him
44:21Or not
44:21There's a guy
44:21Laying on the
44:22Ground right here
44:22Help
44:23Help
44:26I just didn't
44:27See him
44:28Didn't see the guy
44:29Help me
44:30Hey what kind
44:30Of car
44:31What kind
44:31Of cars
44:31Are involved
44:32In Florida
44:44Tesla was on
44:45The country road
44:46Came to a T
44:47Intersection
44:48There was a
44:49Chevy Tahoe
44:50Parked off the
44:51Road
44:52And it ran
44:53Into it
44:54Stretcher
44:55Yeah I did
44:56Get the fucking
44:57Stretcher over here
44:58Shit
44:58Is anyone else
45:02In the vehicle
45:03With this guy
45:03Nah just him
45:04826
45:06You're in route
45:071026
45:09You're in route
45:10Check his back
45:12Check his back
45:13Oh my god
45:20This guy's bad
45:20Boss how much
45:22Have you had drinks
45:23Night
45:23None
45:23Zero
45:24I just left
45:24My office
45:25In Boca
45:25There's a man
45:28Unconscious
45:29The first responders
45:31Are there
45:32The driver
45:32Of the Tesla
45:33Explains that
45:34He was on his phone
45:35Dropped his phone
45:35What happened
45:36I was driving on
45:37I looked down
45:38And I had been
45:38Using the
45:39Cruise control
45:41And I looked down
45:41I didn't realize
45:42How close was the thing
45:42I sat up
45:43And then I sat up
45:44I hit the brakes
45:45And saw the truck
45:45Which way were you going
45:46I was coming from
45:47The T here
45:48Did you stop
45:49At the stop sign
45:49No I didn't
45:50Sir I don't think
45:51I honestly don't know
45:51I looked down
45:52I didn't know
45:52How close I was
45:53To the intersection
45:54And then when I
45:54Popped up
45:55And looked
45:55I saw a black truck
45:56It just happened so fast
45:57What do you do
46:02There's no one else
46:03Here is there
46:03Okay wait a minute though
46:05There's ladies
46:06Flip-locks
46:07There's a pair
46:09Of ladies
46:10Flip-locks
46:10Please tell me
46:11No
46:11Please tell me
46:12This
46:12Get back
46:13Shit I'm sorry
46:14Sir
46:14There's
46:15Flip-locks
46:16Somebody notices
46:18There's a pair
46:19Of women's sandals
46:20Underneath the car
46:21And the driver
46:22Of the Tesla
46:23Says
46:24Please tell me
46:25No
46:25Please tell me
46:26No
46:26And then they
46:28Start looking
46:29And they find
46:30The body
46:31Of this young woman
46:3275 feet
46:34From the
46:34Point of impact
46:36She's right there
46:38She's right there
46:38In the bushes
46:3971
46:41I mean
46:45She was 22
46:48She was a college
46:49Student
46:49She was on a date
46:52A few minutes before
46:54She called her mother
46:55And said I'm on the way
46:56Home
46:56And then you know
46:58Later that night
46:59Her mother got a phone
46:59Call
47:00From the state police
47:02Telling her that her
47:03Daughter
47:03Was dead
47:05I don't know
47:15Of another car
47:17Where that might
47:17Have happened
47:18There was another
47:19Fatal accident
47:21In California
47:22Tesla was on a highway
47:24Ford Explorer
47:26Moved from one lane
47:27Into the Tesla's lane
47:28Human drivers
47:30Deal with that
47:30All the time
47:31And they even
47:32Cut you off
47:32And people
47:33Most of the time
47:34Are able to
47:34Deal with that
47:35The Tesla was
47:37Seven or eight
47:37Car lengths
47:38Behind this Ford
47:40Explorer
47:40And the braking
47:42Did come on
47:43But it was
47:44A half a second
47:45Before impact
47:46It came on
47:49At 70 miles an hour
47:51It came on
47:5220 feet
47:54Before impact
47:55The Ford Explorer
47:57Rolled a couple
47:58Of times
47:58And a 15 year old
47:59Boy was killed
48:00He and his father
48:03Were
48:03Were coming back
48:05From a soccer tournament
48:08He spent the day
48:09Playing soccer
48:09And it was in the evening
48:10You know
48:14His parents
48:15You know
48:18They had hopes
48:18And dreams
48:19For their son
48:20That they're
48:20Never going to see
48:21They wanted to see
48:24Him go to college
48:25This isn't a joke
48:27This is not
48:29Like
48:29You know
48:31Oh well
48:34You know
48:36For progress
48:37For technological progress
48:39There were people
48:40Who died
48:40Building the Hoover Dam
48:41Well that just happens
48:43I don't know
48:43That's certainly
48:46Not how these families
48:47Feel
48:47People are quite
48:50Keyed off of
48:51The whole
48:52Autonomous vehicle thing
48:54So there's all sorts
48:55Of nonsense
48:55About people being
48:56Used as human guinea pigs
48:57And all that
48:57It's like
48:58No
48:58Every single step
48:59We took
48:59At least from our
49:00Stand point
49:01Was to reduce
49:01Complacency
49:02And use
49:02Waterpilot
49:03And to improve
49:04Safety
49:05The problem
49:06With the way
49:06That Tesla
49:07Tests its
49:08Autonomous driving
49:09Is that
49:11Regular people
49:12On regular roads
49:13Are doing it
49:14So when you're
49:15Picking your kids
49:16Up from soccer
49:16Practice
49:17There could be
49:18Some guy
49:18Testing his
49:19Full self-driving
49:20In beta mode
49:21Driving behind you
49:22In front of you
49:22To the side
49:23That's not
49:24A professional driver
49:25That's not
49:27A closed track
49:28That's not
49:29A clearly marked car
49:30That says
49:30Hey test driver
49:31Here
49:32We who share
49:33The roads
49:34With these people
49:35Have a right to know
49:36When someone
49:37Is working with
49:38Technology that
49:38Has not been
49:39Proven safe yet
49:40The federal vehicle
49:42Safety authorities
49:43They've been
49:43Very very slow
49:45To issue rules
49:46About automated
49:47Driving systems
49:48And literally
49:49Said we don't
49:51Want to stymie
49:51American industry
49:52You can be sure
49:54If there's a loophole
49:55Elon will find it
49:56And take advantage
49:57Of it
49:57He is above the law
49:59And his company
50:00Is above the law
50:01And above regulation
50:02One of my saddest times
50:04Covering Tesla
50:05Was at the beginning
50:05Of the coronavirus
50:06He listened to
50:08Chinese authorities
50:08And closed
50:10The Shanghai factory
50:11But when it came to
50:13Here the United States
50:14He didn't listen
50:15To authorities
50:16One of my sources
50:18Inside the factory
50:19Was immunocompromised
50:21He was terrified
50:22Today California
50:28Became the third state
50:29To surpass 25,000
50:31COVID deaths
50:32In Los Angeles County
50:33Many funeral homes
50:34Are filled to capacity
50:36And healthcare professionals
50:37Feel as if they are
50:38Under siege
50:39This is something
50:41With a very low
50:42Mortality rate
50:44The right thing to do
50:45Would be
50:45To not have
50:46Plan lockdown
50:47For the whole country
50:48But anyone
50:49Who's at risk
50:50Should be quarantined
50:51Until the storm passes
50:53After railing for weeks
50:57Against California's
50:58Restrictions on manufacturing
51:00Elon Musk restarted production
51:02At his California plant
51:04On Monday
51:04Tweeting
51:05Quote
51:06I will be on the line
51:07With everyone else
51:08If anyone is arrested
51:10I ask that it only be me
51:12Listening to the news
51:16And all these
51:16Deaths
51:18And getting infected quickly
51:20It was scary
51:21I didn't want to go back
51:22At that time
51:22In April
51:24A supervisor started
51:26Calling us back
51:27It was kind of
51:28On the down low
51:29The fact that they
51:32Kept at production
51:33Like they did
51:34Might reflect
51:36The still somewhat
51:38Precarious finances
51:40Involved at Tesla
51:42You know
51:42They still need to
51:43Make numbers
51:43They still need to
51:44Make bank
51:45They got a lot of
51:46Irons in the fire
51:46They don't need to
51:47Stop production
51:48In Fremont
51:49Apparently the local
51:50Authorities
51:51And Elon didn't
51:52See eye to eye
51:53On those
51:54Quarantine restrictions
51:55The only thing
52:00Tesla had to do
52:01Was simply present
52:02Its safety plan
52:03And get it
52:04Get a green check
52:06You know
52:06From the county
52:07For it
52:08That's it
52:08It wasn't even that hard
52:10It's like
52:10Show us your safety plan
52:11He was
52:13You know
52:14Calling the state
52:15Of California
52:16Fascist
52:16For having health orders
52:18He kept the factory
52:20Open
52:20Long after those
52:22Health orders
52:22Were issued
52:23And there was
52:25An outbreak there
52:25And yeah
52:26It affected workers
52:27Profoundly
52:28Apart from several weeks
52:31Where we were shut down
52:32By the state
52:33And then
52:33Over zealous
52:34Alameda county
52:35Which is a travesty
52:37But apart from that
52:38We've been making cars
52:39This entire time
52:40And it's been great
52:42How do you answer
52:44Your employees
52:44You say
52:45I think you're putting
52:46Me and my family
52:47At risk
52:48What do you say
52:49To them then
52:49Great
52:50Stay home
52:50Stay home
52:51That's it
52:52Yeah
52:53You know
52:54You're talking a lot
52:54About saving humanity
52:56But these are humans
52:57That die in the process
52:59Everybody dies
53:00I know that
53:01Elon
53:01You start thinking
53:06About things
53:07You know
53:07Do I really want
53:08To work here
53:08Do I really want
53:09To risk my life
53:11Getting 20 bucks
53:13An hour
53:13For a billionaire
53:14Who doesn't really care
53:15About his work
53:16Workers
53:17A lot of people
53:18Did go back to work
53:19Might have been
53:20They were forced
53:21Or they were afraid
53:22To lose their job
53:23Or they just
53:24Needed the money
53:24The number one
53:27Priority
53:28Is always
53:28Sell cars
53:29Get them out
53:30As fast as possible
53:31And
53:33Safety takes
53:34A backseat to that
53:36Elon Musk
53:38Once again
53:39Took to Twitter
53:39Writing
53:40Tesla will now
53:41Move its HQ
53:42And future programs
53:44To Texas
53:45Slash Nevada
53:46Immediately
53:47California
53:48Assemblywoman
53:49And former
53:49Labour leader
53:50Lorena Gonzalez
53:51Fired back
53:52With this succinct tweet
53:54Tesla
53:56Thrived
53:57In large part
53:58Because of
53:59California's
53:59Policies
54:00That supported it
54:01It's amazing
54:02That Elon Musk
54:03Would you know
54:04Want to pick up
54:05His ball
54:05And go home
54:06At the first sign
54:07Of being treated
54:08Like all the other
54:08Companies
54:09He doesn't respect
54:12His workforce
54:13Tesla workers
54:15Are one of the
54:16Hardest working
54:17Automobile manufacturing
54:17Workers
54:18There are
54:19They deserve
54:20A fair
54:21Living wage
54:22With him
54:24Making all these
54:24Billings
54:25It shouldn't be
54:26A problem
54:26If you work at Tesla
54:27You should be able
54:28To buy a Tesla
54:28You know
54:29Those are nice cars
54:30The truth is
54:39That neither Tesla
54:40Nor Elon
54:41Is without
54:42His faults
54:42And the general public
54:44Sees that
54:45And they go
54:45Oh what a monster
54:46And to that
54:47I say
54:48Compared to who
54:49Henry Ford
54:51Henry Ford
54:53Collaborated with
54:55The Nazis
54:55And he was
54:56An avid
54:57Enthusiastic
54:58Anti-Semite
54:59And probably
55:00Not that much
55:01Fun to work for
55:01Carlos Ghosn
55:04Here's a man
55:05Who doesn't know
55:05A lot of
55:06Personal limits
55:07Charles Kettering
55:09Poisoned
55:10Generations of
55:11Americans
55:11Knowingly
55:12With lead
55:13As a gasoline
55:15Additive
55:15Because it was
55:16A little bit
55:16Cheaper
55:17The list
55:18Goes on
55:18Most automaker
55:21CEOs
55:22Have been
55:23Moral monsters
55:24Of one kind
55:25Or another
55:26It's just that
55:29The general public
55:29Doesn't
55:30Know these names
55:31Or know these stories
55:33And Elon's
55:34Out there every day
55:35It's like a window
55:36Into his house
55:37Your nails rock
55:38Thank you
55:39They make it
55:41Very hard to
55:42Wipe my butt
55:43But they're good
55:44He's just
55:48Joe Blow
55:49With a genius IQ
55:50He's just a guy
55:52Who wants to
55:52Do better
55:53And often
55:54Steps on his own
55:55Dick doing it
55:56And I'm sure
56:00He has moments
56:01Of regret
56:01But of course
56:02Being the richest
56:03Man in the world
56:03You know
56:03Not gonna keep
56:05Him up at night
56:05He's too
56:07God damn
56:07Busy to care
56:08Mentally
56:09And otherwise
56:10I think he's
56:11Too busy
56:11To care
56:12About his
56:13Posterity
56:14In this country
56:18We idolize
56:20People like that
56:20Specifically men
56:21Like that
56:22He can be
56:23A total jerk
56:24And people are like
56:26Well he's worth
56:26Billions of dollars
56:27That level of money
56:28That level of power
56:30That makes him
56:31Above the law
56:32Above
56:33Paying taxes
56:35It's as if
56:36He floats
56:37Above
56:38The things
56:39The rest of us
56:40Have to
56:41Adhere to
56:42That's what
56:44Makes him an oligarch
56:44Guys
56:45Guys
56:46How'd it go?
56:47Elon what do you think?
56:48Elon Musk made a lot of people rich
56:49He has a lot of friends
56:51In high places
56:52Stay back
56:53Elon
56:53Stay back guys
56:54Maybe he's reached
56:55Escape velocity
56:56No one seems to be
56:57Reining him in
56:58Until everyone is equal
57:03Before the law
57:04You're gonna see
57:05A lot of weird things
57:07In this country
57:07A lot of people
57:09Distrusting the government
57:11Distrusting institutions
57:13Feeling like they can
57:15And should do
57:15Whatever they want
57:16And I don't think
57:19That if we have
57:20The kind of lawlessness
57:21That we have at the top
57:23We would see
57:25As many disruptions
57:26To our social fabric
57:29The subtext of which
57:31Is
57:32This is unfair
57:34Get along
57:48Jeans jacket
57:50Get along
57:51Like who's you too
57:53Come along
57:54Generator
57:56Coming up
57:57If I come through
57:58I've got my eyes on you
58:02I've got my eyes on you
58:08I've got my eyes on you
58:09I've got my eyes on you
58:11I've got my eyes on you
58:13I've got my eyes on you
58:18Iowa
58:18髏
58:21As are you
58:22go over
58:24Please
