00:00I'll tell you what I take from the NBA Finals, and maybe it is relevant to the conversation
00:05that we were just having, and you're welcome to join us at 888-957-9570.
00:10This is maybe another brick, at least on my wall, when you want to talk about giving up
00:17all of your assets to go get a major star.
00:22And it's funny the conversation has arrived here because I'm not, like my reason for thinking
00:28the Giannis thing is kind of unrealistic and just the timing is wrong, is not because
00:33I'm worried about the Warriors five years from now.
00:37It's not that, like, I don't want to prioritize Steph.
00:40I want to be all in on next year, but I want to do that while also still doing good business.
00:48And I think Steph agrees.
00:50Draymond agrees.
00:51It's why they both spoke out against the Laurie Markkinen deal, where Draymond has said,
00:55I told the guys, that's a bad deal.
00:57You don't give up everything for one guy, because guess what?
01:01You're still probably not going to win.
01:03And this year's Finals show it.
01:06The Paul George Finals, both of these teams built on being...
01:09I love that.
01:10They are the two teams that built, they were the ones that took the assets for Paul George.
01:16And now look at them.
01:18And you could look at Kevin Durant to Phoenix.
01:22You can look at a lot of these situations that have unfolded in the last five years, where
01:28a big-time star, Dame Lillard, you got to send me to Milwaukee.
01:32How'd it go?
01:33How'd it go?
01:35The big-name player with all the assets going in the other direction?
01:40Recent times tell you the team acquiring the big name does not win.
01:44It hasn't happened in a while, to be honest with you.
01:47Yeah, it's a challenge.
01:48And the best way to do it is the way that the Warriors did it for the first title, certainly.
01:54And then you got KD, and so you were able to make it into a dynasty.
01:57But OKC, 68 wins.
02:00You traded for Shea Gilgis-Alexander, and you got a bunch of picks.
02:03And you got more picks.
02:03And you got more picks.
02:04And you used them.
02:05You used them wisely.
02:07You developed.
02:07You got better.
02:08You won 68.
02:09And now here you are in the NBA Finals.
02:11And San Antonio is trying to do the exact same thing.
02:14And so the Warriors are not in a spot where they can actually do that.
02:18Well, they could if you traded Steph, and you traded Jimmy, and you traded Draymond to
02:23three different teams.
02:24And you got, let's just say, 14 first-round picks over the next six or seven years.
02:29OK, you're going to have to eat it for five or six years and hope that you get them right
02:35and hope that you're so bad that you're high enough in the lottery that you can actually
02:39turn it around.
02:40That's not easy.
02:42I want the Warriors to be very involved this offseason.
02:44I just don't think it makes sense to be involved in that store.
02:48There's a bunch of different ways to do this.
02:50And you kind of brought this up earlier today.
02:53And we can throw it out to our listeners at 888-957-9570.
02:57Would you be disappointed if the Warriors kind of, and I don't want to use the wrong phrase
03:03here, is it play it safe?
03:07Is it just not make any deals at all?
03:10I don't think that's possible.
03:12Of course, the Warriors are going to do something.
03:14The roster is not going to be exactly the same.
03:17But do they need to be involved at the highest of levels?
03:21Do they need to be in on Giannis and Durant and anybody else?
03:27Or what if they're shopping?
03:29Have you ever been to Harrods in London?
03:30Yeah.
03:31Right, where it's got all the floors?
03:32Don't go to the top floor.
03:34Go to the second top floor.
03:36How many floors are there?
03:37Seven?
03:37Something like that.
03:37Go to the sixth floor.
03:39I'm going to shop there.
03:40I don't need the elevator to the Giannis wing.
03:43I want the elevator that goes to Nas Reed, Michael Porter Jr., Cam Johnson.
03:49Let's talk about those players.
03:52And I wonder how accessible they are.
03:55But my thinking, my translation of what Shams said is that they're more accessible than we think they are.
04:02For those of you who haven't heard it, this came on the Pat McAfee show.
04:06Shams was a guest and here's what he said.
04:08This is the most, I think, anticipation team executives have had over an offseason.
04:14I think this is going to be the craziest offseason of all, of, I don't want to say all time.
04:18We just came off a trade deadline.
04:19We just came off a trade deadline.
04:21I think what might have been, it was the craziest of all time.
04:23I think this offseason might be the most craziest ever.
04:26What you have right now is you have the parity in the league.
04:30It's so thin right now.
04:31Like, as far as the thin line of where you can win a championship or you might be falling into the lottery.
04:36And I think the ability to go out there and improve your team and get there to championship level,
04:41I think that's on the minds of everyone around the league.
04:42So how can you elevate your team?
04:44Okay.
04:45So, you kind of brought that up earlier.
04:48Like, if the Warriors don't make some sort of landmark change, would you be disappointed?
04:54Are you expecting that?
04:57Would you, you know, are you hoping for that?
05:00I don't know.
05:01What words would you use?
05:03I don't think that I'm expecting it, nor am I hoping for that.
05:06I would love for them to just get better.
05:08Now, if you could turn Kaminga in a sign-and-trade and Draymond and not have to give up a ton of picks
05:15and turn that into Giannis or KD, that would be awesome.
05:19I would rather have Steph and Jimmy and Kevin Durant, Steph and Jimmy Butler and Giannis,
05:26as opposed to Steph, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond.
05:29And I do think that Kaminga is going to turn into something.
05:32And, yeah, if you have to give up some assets to make those other things happen, I'd be open to it.
05:38Some assets.
05:39Well, yeah, that would be picks.
05:41And, you know, it would be Draymond and it would be Kaminga.
05:43And it would probably be either Buddy Healed and or Pods.
05:48And then a Brinks truck of picks.
05:50Some picks, yeah, probably two or three first-round picks, depending on how much that team likes Kaminga
05:54and how many other teams are involved.
05:56You're talking about Giannis.
05:58Or KD.
05:58Or KD.
05:59Or Kevin Durant.
06:00Because for me, if you're going to do a two-year, it's basically a two-year thing, no matter what you do.
06:06Because Giannis' contract is, he has two more years and then a player option.
06:10So all of this, to me, is a two-year thing.
06:13Granted, and I agree with you, part of what I was also saying on Friday about all of this is this doesn't make any sense for him.
06:20This is a terrible idea for him.
06:23For Giannis?
06:24Yes.
06:25Yes.
06:26Well, what's a good idea, going to Toronto?
06:29Going somewhere that is not going to implode 20 months after you arrive with no assets left over.
06:37Like, a lot of Warrior fans want Giannis to completely ruin the back half of his career, all for the shot at one ring.
06:46Like, I just don't.
06:47So that's what I'm saying.
06:49To me, this is a multi-layered point.
06:51It's a bad idea for Giannis.
06:53Steve Kerr just told you it was a bad idea for the Warriors.
06:57He laughed at it.
06:59The concept of sending out, and this is not about like, oh, I'm worried about the Warriors in 2029.
07:04That's not what I'm saying.
07:05It's just about good business.
07:07The concept of sending out three to four picks along with pick swaps, to send all of that out when your best players are about to retire is suicidal.
07:18It's completely suicidal, all in a shot for basically one ring.
07:27And then the other side to it that I really think gets sort of mishandled is our concept of where the Warriors sit right now.
07:35The way this season finished has warped so many Warrior fans into thinking that they're currently not good.
07:42And I'm like, no, they're good.
07:43They're good.
07:44Oh, they're good.
07:45They played really, really well.
07:48But what are they in two years?
07:50Like, if you don't do anything, if you...
07:53I thought nobody cared what they are in two years.
07:54Well, obviously, I mean, you care.
07:56You said, would you rather have a title, a guaranteed title next year in 12 years of bad?
08:01Or, you know, you roll your dice over the next two.
08:04And I think that if you go into next year and other teams around you in the West get better, not all of them, because some are going to have to give players up like Phoenix, you mentioned before.
08:13But I think that the conference is going to only get tougher.
08:17Young players are going to get better.
08:19And if you come back with a couple of replacements for Kaminga and, you know, a couple of replacements for GP2 and Kavon, who are probably vet men guys, are you going to be that much better?
08:31Better enough to go and challenge the teams that are already ahead of you?
08:35I don't think so.
08:36Yeah, and I also like...
08:37Here's the part from Warrior fans I totally get.
08:40Like, let me read a text that just came in.
08:42It's a double-barreled text.
08:43It's actually two texts.
08:45See you, 408.
08:46Thank you so much for listening.
08:47The text says, um, what?
08:51The answer is playing with Steph Curry.
08:54And obviously he's talking about why would Giannis want to do this.
08:57The next text says, if you don't think Giannis doesn't consider that the best use of his next two to three years, you're completely missing the picture.
09:06And I would argue back multiple things.
09:09Number one, no, you're missing the picture.
09:11You're missing the picture.
09:12Giannis does not want to find...
09:13He's a very loyal guy.
09:15He does not want to finally leave Milwaukee so that he can go do something for a year.
09:20That's not what he wants to do.
09:23And by the way, I don't know how you look at things.
09:26And I mean that all of our listeners.
09:28Dibs, I know how you look at things.
09:30And I share this view, which is that Vegas will often tell you what's going on out there.
09:37And you know what got released earlier today?
09:40The odds of where Giannis is going to play next.
09:43How many teams came in ahead of the Warriors?
09:46One, two, three, four.
09:49I'm going to keep going until I get to double digits.
09:51It doesn't make sense for either party.
09:58I know you think it makes sense for you because we just want that bite of ice cream.
10:04Like, yeah, Giannis and Steph, next year, let's ride.
10:07But the bigger business picture for everyone involved, I would argue it does not make a lot of sense.
10:14I don't know why Giannis would want to do that.
10:16But NBA circles don't think he does.
10:19Steve Kerr just said, you don't give up a bunch of picks when your star is 37.
10:25You just don't do that.
10:26That's not how we're looking at it.
10:27I feel like everyone's telling us that Giannis is not coming to the Bay and it doesn't make sense.
10:32But we don't want to hear it.
10:34We don't want to hear it.
10:35And I get that.
10:36I get how fun it would be.
10:37We are conditioned to expect big things and have big things happen.
10:42Going back to the Kevin Durant move in July of many, many years ago.
10:46And then now this year at the deadline, all we talked about was Giannis.
10:50And then it was KD.
10:51And you know what?
10:52Jimmy Butler.
10:52Well, probably not Jimmy Butler because he wants to go to Phoenix.
10:55And it turned out it was Jimmy Butler.
10:56So this organization has conditioned us to expect, not only hope for, but expect big things to happen.
11:03So when you have the most craziest offseason about to happen, you expect that the Warriors are going to be a big part of it.
11:11Because they have been.
11:12Yes.
11:13I agree with you.
11:13But I guess what I'm saying is we then need to define what's a big thing.
11:19Like, if that immediately makes your mind go to Giannis and KD, I would just argue that's kind of, that's the fantasy land floor.
11:27I would agree.
11:28You know what I mean?
11:29Last offseason was not a big thing.
11:31It felt like Klay was going to leave.
11:33Like, that was a done deal.
11:35And they were able to turn Klay into a bunch of guys.
11:38And it was like, okay, this was not a big thing.
11:42Slow Mo and Buddy and, you know, D'Anthony Melton came in.
11:46And so that wasn't necessarily a big thing, but it turned out to be kind of a good thing.
11:51And it was to us.
11:53I mean, I hope every fan feels that way.
11:55Like, it doesn't have to be a blockbuster that makes the top page on all the sports websites for it to be a big deal to us if we're Warrior fans.
12:07Do you know what I mean?
12:07If they could get Nas Reed, if they could get Trey Murphy, I think that's huge.
12:13That's huge.
12:15It's not a blockbuster.
12:16Right.
12:16And I don't even know what it would look like, Bobby Mark's 20 minutes.
12:20But, like, those are, that to me, those are big deals.
12:24And they make the Warriors a lot better.
12:26And so, yes, I think that those things will get explored because you can make the team a lot better
12:32and actually tune up what's already a really good team without sending the next seven years of Warrior basketball out the door.
12:41Yeah.
12:41On a song.
12:42I understand that, but I think that fans, if you have all these players flying around the country in deals, there's going to be a little bit of FOMO.
12:50As much as those are good, solid, sensible trades and players who will make you better.
12:55And if Kaminga's part of a sign and trade and you get a couple of ready-made NBA rotational pieces and your team is definitely a little bit better, probably not a lot better.
13:07There still will be emotional fear of missing out if Giannis goes to Toronto and KD goes here and maybe Zion goes there.
13:14And you get all these teams and all these players flying around and you wind up with, you know, just kind of just a guy.
13:21If you're not, well, I mean, you follow it a lot more closely than most fans.
13:25Most fans are like, yeah, Giannis, give me Giannis, give me KD, give me a well-known named player.
13:32And you wind up with, you know, Nas Reed.
13:34Okay.
13:35Yeah.
13:36Get Giannis.
13:37And then give me your tickets in three years because they're going to be free.
13:41Yeah.
13:41I'm just telling you how fans think and how fans will feel.
13:44I get it.
13:44And I understand that.
13:45Yeah.
13:46I get it.
13:46That's candy, man.
13:47I get it.
