During a press briefing on Monday, Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA) was asked about potential cuts to federal funding for Pennsylvania as Congress continues to debate the Republican budget.
Transcript
00:00I'm worried you bet federal funding in this budget because there's a lot of money that's potentially in the state here and you don't know what's going to happen.
00:08Well, as I said before, I'm deeply concerned about the Medicaid cuts.
00:12300 plus thousand Pennsylvanians will lose health care.
00:16Over 100,000 will lose food assistance.
00:19Hospitals and rural communities could shutter as a result of this.
00:23In addition to that, we've seen billions of dollars illegally cut from Pennsylvania.
00:29I've had to sue the federal government, and I've sued successfully each time and maintained those funds coming into Pennsylvania.
00:38As the federal government prepares to pass a budget, it is my hope that they will not make deeper cuts to Pennsylvania.
00:47And it is certainly my hope that our federal representatives wouldn't vote for something that takes something away from Pennsylvania students or Pennsylvania seniors and everybody in between.
00:57These are times of real worry.
01:00We've got our house in order in Pennsylvania.
01:02We've got a surplus.
01:03We've got a balanced budget.
01:05I've proposed critical investments like mass transit as well as tax cuts for small businesses and families who are trying to afford child care.
01:14We can do all that and maintain all that in Pennsylvania.
01:17It gets far harder if our folks in Washington cut funding that we rely on here in Pennsylvania.
01:23So we've got our act together.
01:25I hope they get theirs together.
01:26Thanks, everybody.
