00:00The CBS Radio Mystery Theater presents...
00:05Come in.
00:23Welcome.
00:25I'm E.G. Marshall.
00:26Have you ever thought to yourself how much of your life is spent in dreams?
00:33Not only those that delight or haunt you in your sleeping hours,
00:37but the ones that are present in your waking hours.
00:41Dreams of happiness or despair, bright and possible in the morning,
00:46or gray and despondent in the tiredness of evening.
00:50Dreams of romance and acclaim,
00:53or dreams of bitter violence and shocking mayhem.
00:58Just as I said, it's a ghost town.
01:03Not the way I see it, school mom.
01:05You better take a closer look.
01:08Why, you crazy loco!
01:10Hold on!
01:11We're going to get a skin!
01:13Hang on!
01:14Our mystery drama, Ghost Town,
01:28was written especially for the Mystery Theater by Ian Martin
01:31and stars Lois Nettleton.
01:34It is sponsored in part by Buick Motor Division and Time Magazine.
01:40I'll be back shortly with Act One.
01:41From Salt Lake City,
01:56if you were driving on vacation
01:58and wanted to wander through fresh countryside,
02:01you could forget Interstate 15 into Los Angeles
02:05and choose Route 6.
02:07And if you were Sarah Conway, teacher,
02:11looking for general background for your doctorate
02:13and preparing your thesis on the gold rush that shaped American history,
02:19you might wander even further afield
02:21into that dread nightmare desert known as Death Valley.
02:26And in it, to a place beyond death,
02:31a ghost among ghosts.
02:33Well, Sheriff, still here?
02:36I got a good statement from Miss Conway.
02:39Finish the autopsy?
02:41Uh, yes.
02:42I want to talk to you about that.
02:45I want to want to talk to you about it, Doctor.
02:47But first, if there's any chance that Miss Conway might...
02:50Oh, no, don't worry about that.
02:52Night's rest, medication, supportive treatment,
02:55have done her wonders.
02:57Matter of fact,
02:58she might be able to give you enough right now, Sheriff.
03:01Oh, you mean it's all right to question her?
03:04Well, that depends on whether she's up to answering.
03:08Uh, let me talk to her first.
03:12Miss Conway?
03:15Hey, Dr. Garvey.
03:16How do you feel?
03:19Oh, as if I'd been wrung through a mincer
03:22and broiled slowly on an open fire.
03:26So you have, in a sense.
03:29How's the headache?
03:31From the accident?
03:32Mm-hmm.
03:33Oh, that one's gone.
03:35Another one now.
03:36What happened?
03:37Well, that's what we'd like to know.
03:40We?
03:41Uh, yeah.
03:42Sheriff Brenner is with me.
03:44Well, highly, Miss Conway.
03:45We sure are mighty sorry to bother you.
03:48I wish you were all I had to bother me.
03:51Death?
03:52I mean, I...
03:54Well, you know who I mean.
03:55Even if I don't know what I...
03:57Who I mean.
03:59Is he dead?
04:00And you mean Desmond Pogue?
04:02Yes.
04:02The man who was found with you near the car?
04:05If that's his name, he is most assuredly dead.
04:09You sound strange when you talk about him.
04:12Do I?
04:13Well, I gather you feel a little, uh, strange about him yourself.
04:19Yes.
04:21Oh, yes.
04:24My car?
04:25Well, I...
04:26I'm afraid that's a total wreck, Miss Conway.
04:28Oh.
04:29Oh, dear.
04:30How'll I get home?
04:31No need to worry about that.
04:33Your brother is driving in tomorrow from the coast.
04:37I hope you didn't alarm my family.
04:39Well, I reckon the shoe is on the other foot, Miss Conway.
04:42They kind of alarmed us first when you turned up missing.
04:45And a good thing it did.
04:47And we found you in time.
04:50In time?
04:51You were in shock.
04:52A pretty totally dehydrated, a moderate to severe concussion.
04:58Several badly cracked ribs.
05:00But I'm all right now.
05:02Well, you have some physical discomfort for a while,
05:05but your body fluids have been restored.
05:08The ribs are taped.
05:09A concussion doesn't appear to have been too severe,
05:13although you may have some after-effects of head pain, dizziness.
05:19I wish I was sure that I won't have that all my life.
05:23I'm sure of what really happened.
05:25Well, now, Miss Conway, you want to try to tell us?
05:29Yes, I'll try.
05:31Oh, let me think.
05:34Where was I when you found me?
05:36Right where your car.
05:37It overturned, smack in the middle of the valley.
05:39Oh, yes, about halfway through, yes.
05:40We just passed some place called Furnace Creek.
05:45Oh, that's it.
05:47The middle of hell.
05:48The temperature there pretty near never goes below 100
05:51and can get as high as 130 degrees plus.
05:55This time of year,
05:57especially down that old back road you were driving.
06:00That wasn't my fault.
06:01Yes, Pogue made you turn off?
06:03Yes.
06:04Now, why?
06:06You know who I am?
06:08Well, we know you're a schoolteacher from Los Angeles
06:11and that you were on vacation.
06:13Yes, well, sort of.
06:15I'd been in Salt Lake
06:16and I'd covered most of the territory south and west of there.
06:20So I decided I'd sort of head back,
06:24splitting in between them through the country I hadn't seen.
06:26Oh, what'd you come down, Route 6?
06:28Yes, to Tonopah.
06:29Well, and then I came south on 95 to Scotty's Junction
06:33and I decided I really ought to go through Death Valley.
06:38Well, anyway,
06:39I got just past a little place called Scotty's Castle
06:42and I looked at my gas gauge.
06:46It was perilously hot.
06:49Hard to breathe, even.
06:51And I figured before I went through the valley,
06:53I'd better get my gas tank filled.
06:55So, I pulled up to a lone gas pump
06:58in front of a kind of general store
07:00and this old man came out.
07:04Uh, could you fill her up, please, regular?
07:07You going on through?
07:09Yeah, I thought I would.
07:10I mean, I've never really seen it
07:11from up north to south like this.
07:14Well, I wouldn't recommend it.
07:16Not on an old day like today.
07:18It was awfully hot.
07:20You ain't felt nothing yet.
07:21The time you get to the bottom of the valley,
07:24you're pretty near 300 feet below sea level.
07:27Like trying to breathe in one of them steam baths.
07:31Well, it isn't all that far, is it?
07:35Oh, not in the car, I reckon.
07:37About 100 miles.
07:39And if it gets too much for you,
07:40you could always turn off where
07:4258 comes on across or 190.
07:45Hmm.
07:46Well, we'll see.
07:48I would like to see the whole valley.
07:49Whatever you say.
07:51But you get to the bottom,
07:53I swear you could fry an egg on the rock
07:55and never have to turn it over
07:56to get it cooked both sides.
07:59Uh, do you have a ladies' room?
08:00Right around the side of the house.
08:02Doors open, we don't use keys
08:04this part of the country.
08:08I tried running some cold water on my wrist
08:10and splashing it on my face.
08:13My dress was literally plastered to me.
08:16So I changed into some shorts
08:18and a sleeveless blouse.
08:20I didn't feel any cooler,
08:22but at least I was drier.
08:24When I came out,
08:26the man had gone into the store.
08:28I went in and paid him
08:29and bought some cold drinks.
08:31Then I came back to the car
08:32and began my trip into Death Valley.
08:36Within a mile,
08:37I was bathed in perspiration.
08:39And I pretty much made up my mind
08:42I would turn off where the man said,
08:44get out of that sweat bath.
08:47I turned on the radio
08:48to see if maybe I could pick up
08:49a weather report.
08:52And while I was licking the dial,
08:54my eyes were taking in
08:56the desolate country.
08:58Dry, baked, salt-encrusted,
09:02sweeping away barren
09:04to the great mountains.
09:05Then, all of a sudden,
09:10my attention was held
09:12by the voice from the radio.
09:13Escaping from the high-security
09:15state sanitarium,
09:17he savagely beat one guard
09:18who's still in a coma
09:19and severely injured another.
09:23Now, a sheriff of this county...
09:24Turn it off, lady.
09:26Watch it, watch it now.
09:27Just stay on the road.
09:29Turn that squawk box off.
09:30This is a gun
09:31in the back of your neck.
09:32That's better.
09:37No, no, no, no, no.
09:37Don't slow down.
09:38Just keep driving.
09:40How'd you get in my car?
09:42When you went to the ladies' room,
09:44I climbed in the back.
09:47It's hot and all,
09:48get out back here.
09:49I'm coming up front.
09:51Who are you?
09:54I'm a dangerous nut.
09:56Didn't you hear?
09:58You mean you're the man?
10:02The man the one the sheriff
10:06was talking about?
10:07That's me.
10:08Des Pogue.
10:10What's your name?
10:12Why, it...
10:13Don't make no difference to me.
10:14All I want is just to handle
10:15to call you.
10:16My name is Sarah Conway.
10:19You're a right cute little kitten.
10:23What are you doing
10:24heading into Death Valley all alone?
10:26I'm on my way home.
10:28To where?
10:30Los Angeles.
10:30From where?
10:33Well,
10:34the last big city I was in
10:36was in Salt Lake.
10:38Why'd anyone in his right mind
10:39pick this route to travel?
10:42Curiosity.
10:44Oh, yeah.
10:45You know what that did?
10:47Killed the cat, didn't it?
10:49Or maybe the kitten.
10:51What was you so curious about?
10:55I'm interested in anything
10:56that has a gold mining background.
11:00Oh, yeah?
11:01How come?
11:03As background for my, uh...
11:05my doctor's thesis.
11:07What are you, schoolteacher?
11:09Something like that?
11:10No, not something like that.
11:11I am a schoolteacher.
11:12Tell me something.
11:15When they had me locked up,
11:17oh, long ways from here,
11:19and I did a lot of reading.
11:21I'm no educated man,
11:23but, uh...
11:25there was this thing
11:26I was trying to puzzle out.
11:28Maybe you, being a schoolteacher,
11:30could help.
11:31What were you trying to puzzle out?
11:34You believe in the notion
11:35of the bad seed?
11:38Like if you plant some cactus, like,
11:41and the first seed ever
11:42has got something wrong with it?
11:44If I ever plant that old cactus
11:47throws from then on in,
11:49it would be the same.
11:52Well, if you want my opinion,
11:54I'd say that was
11:55a generally exploded theory.
11:58Oh, yeah?
12:00How come you think
12:01you know so much,
12:03little old kitten school mom?
12:05You ever hear the real Despo?
12:08I don't understand.
12:10His real name was Desperado.
12:14What are you sewing down for?
12:16Well, we're coming to, uh,
12:17Route 190.
12:19This is where I turn off.
12:20Oh, no, you don't.
12:21Not now.
12:22You're taking me
12:22where I want to go.
12:24Where's that?
12:25You just keep on driving
12:26down to Furnace Creek,
12:27and then I'll tell you
12:28how to swing off
12:29to where we're going.
12:30But where are we going?
12:32Well, we're going back
12:34to Bone Dry Gulch
12:35to see if I can meet up
12:37with the first Despo.
12:40The one I was telling you about?
12:42Here's I can figure.
12:43My great-great-grandfather?
12:47But that's for a generation.
12:51He'd have to be dead
12:52for nearly a hundred years.
12:54Now, see, Miss School Mom,
12:56that's something
12:56I've come a long ways
12:58to make real sure of.
13:00And if I can fix it right,
13:02I'm going to make certain sure
13:03he did die,
13:05good and proper,
13:06so I could never have been.
13:11You just keep on driving, ma'am.
13:13Unless you want to join
13:15the both of us.
13:21The tall, dark man
13:23with the brooding eyes
13:24sitting beside her
13:25in the front seat
13:26seems relaxed
13:27and calm enough,
13:29the gun held loosely
13:31in his hand.
13:31But his fixed gaze
13:34and his irrational statements
13:36constantly stir the butterflies
13:38in Sarah Conway's stomach
13:39and send worms of fear
13:42wriggling along her backbone.
13:45For there is no question
13:46that Despo,
13:47if that's his name,
13:49is stark staring mad.
13:51I shall return shortly
13:53with Act Two.
14:06Sarah Conway's small,
14:08capable hands
14:09are white-knuckled now
14:10from grasping the wheel
14:12so tight.
14:13For 20 miles
14:15since they left
14:16Furnace Creek
14:17behind them,
14:18the man beside her,
14:19his eyes hooded,
14:21has sat immobile.
14:22But the big muscular hand
14:24that holds the gun
14:25is steady
14:26and the barrel
14:28is sighted straight
14:29towards her heart.
14:30Then,
14:31all of a sudden,
14:32you can start to slow up
14:34around this bend.
14:35What for?
14:37There ought to be
14:38an old road
14:39forking off to the right
14:40going on down deeper
14:41into the valley.
14:42I don't think
14:43there's any road
14:44along here.
14:44Of course there is.
14:46How else do you get
14:46the Bone Dry Gulch?
14:48But it doesn't show
14:48on the map.
14:50I reckon it might not
14:51at that.
14:53Bet the town
14:54don't either.
14:56The town?
14:57Bone Dry Gulch.
14:59I thought you were
15:00talking about a place.
15:03There isn't any town
15:04of Bone Dry Gulch.
15:06I've read about that.
15:07Hold it.
15:11Ah, there she is.
15:14Right there.
15:16Now, what is?
15:17The road.
15:19Can't you see it?
15:20Well,
15:21that's scarcely better
15:22than some old
15:23outgrown wagon tracks.
15:25I can't drive down that.
15:26Well, Miss Sarah,
15:27ma'am,
15:27we just purely
15:28ain't gonna walk
15:29in this here heat.
15:31Go on,
15:32start a-going
15:32and turn off.
15:33But it's too steep.
15:34I wouldn't want you
15:35to come to no harm,
15:37but I can't drive.
15:39And I can't leave you behind.
15:42And I don't want
15:44to use this gun.
15:46Less than I have to.
15:47All right.
15:48All right,
15:48I'll try it.
15:54All right,
15:55nice and easy.
15:57Don't worry.
15:58Now,
16:00what was you saying
16:01you read about
16:02Bone Dry?
16:03It isn't there anymore.
16:06The town,
16:07I mean.
16:08All it is now
16:08is a ghost town.
16:11Matter of fact,
16:13I only know
16:13what I read.
16:15Now,
16:15what did you read,
16:16ma'am?
16:17Well,
16:19sometime after
16:20the Civil War,
16:21there was a gold
16:22strike here.
16:23I guess
16:24most of the claims
16:26weren't worth working
16:27because all the settlers
16:28except one
16:29sold out to one man.
16:31Oh,
16:32I've forgotten his name.
16:34Well,
16:34that'd be
16:34Revette Chalmers.
16:37I guess we read
16:38the same books,
16:39ma'am.
16:40But the vein
16:41petered out
16:42and the town
16:43was abandoned.
16:46Is, uh,
16:47is that what
16:48you're here for?
16:50Looking for gold?
16:51No.
16:53I'm looking for
16:54something a whole
16:54lot more precious.
16:56What?
16:58If I was a preacher,
17:00I guess I would say
17:01my immortal soul.
17:04I,
17:04I don't quite
17:05follow you.
17:06Well,
17:06that's just it,
17:07you see.
17:07I hope no one
17:08ever does.
17:10And no one
17:11ever should have
17:12followed down
17:12from the very first.
17:15The very first?
17:16That was a rich load
17:18while it lasted,
17:20ma'am.
17:21And no one
17:22sold out his claim
17:23who wasn't forced to,
17:26which at the end
17:27was all but one.
17:29A man named Ross.
17:31Oh, yes,
17:32that's right.
17:32He made the first strike,
17:33didn't he?
17:34Yes, sir.
17:35And Revette Chalmers
17:36couldn't get him out
17:37far and square.
17:39So he sent
17:40for the man
17:41called Desperado
17:43Pogue.
17:47Only nobody dared
17:48call him
17:48that first name
17:49to his face.
17:51It may do
17:52with this Pogue.
17:54Your ancestor?
17:55Who came here
17:56to dry goats
17:57a lone hand
17:58and left,
17:59as I believe,
18:00the same way.
18:02He never should have
18:03planted his seed.
18:05He should have died
18:06and ended there.
18:07instead somewhere
18:10as in the long line
18:11I came from
18:12to murder
18:14and maim
18:16and hurt
18:16and kill
18:18when his black mood
18:19is on me.
18:22The sins
18:23of the fathers.
18:26I didn't ask
18:27them to be visited
18:28on me.
18:29I want to bring
18:31them back
18:32and lay them
18:33where they belong
18:34on his shoulders
18:35in his black heart.
18:39And since
18:40I can't seek
18:41forgiveness
18:42from the Lord
18:43to wash me out
18:45as though
18:46I had never been...
18:47But you can't
18:48go back over a century.
18:49Why not?
18:51If the spirit
18:52wills.
18:54Look there.
18:55Look below us.
18:59Waiting for me
19:00just as I said
19:01bone dry gulch.
19:04Just as I said.
19:07A ghost town.
19:08Oh, not the way
19:09I see it school, Mom.
19:11You better
19:11take a closer look.
19:14You crazy...
19:15I got you.
19:16What was that?
19:17What was that?
19:18I got you.
19:18I got you.
19:18I got you.
19:20Hang on.
19:25Just as I tried
19:29to grab his gun
19:29a tire blew
19:31and the car
19:32slewed sliding
19:33toward the road edge
19:33then we hit a rock
19:35and went rolling
19:36only one lone
19:38clump of giant cactus
19:39kept us from
19:40tumbling all the way
19:40to the floor
19:41of the valley.
19:43I must have
19:43hit my head
19:44as we turned over.
19:46By the time
19:46I could gather
19:47my wits
19:47the tall dark man
19:49who called himself
19:50Despo
19:51was way far
19:53down below me
19:53on the winding road.
19:55As I called
19:55hey
19:56Mr. Pogue
19:58Des
19:59you can't
20:00leave me here
20:01like this
20:02hurry
20:03he had disappeared
20:06he had disappeared
20:08I climbed out
20:11and started after him
20:12and it was beginning
20:14to grow dark
20:15and suddenly
20:17I stopped
20:18dead in my tracks
20:20but through
20:22the twilight
20:22rising from the floor
20:24of the valley
20:25from where
20:26the ghost town
20:27used to be
20:28or the lights
20:30of the town
20:31it was far
20:32from dead
20:33I could even
20:35hear the music
20:36from the superman
20:37I hadn't
20:40till now
20:41paid much attention
20:43to how the man
20:43had been dressed
20:44but when I caught
20:46up with him
20:47talking in the shadows
20:49behind the livery
20:50stable with another man
20:51I was amazed
20:53to realize
20:53that what I had
20:54taken for
20:55plain jeans
20:56were not
20:57faded copies
20:59but the authentic
21:01article
21:01and strung
21:03around his waist
21:04was a cartridge
21:05belt and a gun
21:05in its holster
21:06hiding in the
21:09deeper shadows
21:10I could hear
21:11them talk
21:12and I expected
21:13you sooner
21:14a bogey
21:14my horse
21:15took a spill
21:16on a gopher hole
21:17broke his leg
21:18understand now
21:20I don't want
21:20anything
21:21questioning
21:22you just have
21:23to persuade Ross
21:25to get up
21:26I'll persuade him
21:27but
21:27inside the law
21:29you'd settle
21:31for a fair
21:32shoot down
21:32of course
21:33good
21:35well then
21:36you might just
21:37sort of make
21:38an announcement
21:39that I'm
21:39your new manager
21:40kind of make
21:42me legitimate
21:43I'll get right
21:44back to the
21:45saloon
21:45and lay it out
21:46introduce you
21:48that's fine
21:49you go on in
21:51prepare them
21:52for me
21:53all right
21:56let's go
21:56Mr. Chow
21:57they turned
21:59so quickly
21:59and came
22:00toward me
22:01that instinctively
22:02I started back
22:03and as I did
22:04so I slipped
22:04and fell
22:05right in their
22:06path
22:07but to my
22:09stunned
22:10amazement
22:11as they
22:12turned the
22:13corner
22:13the two
22:15of them
22:15walked right
22:16through
22:17and over
22:18me
22:18as if I
22:19were no
22:20more substantial
22:21than the
22:21shadows around
22:22me
22:22and in that
22:24moment
22:25I realized
22:27that not only
22:29was I in a
22:29ghost town
22:30but I was
22:32more ghost
22:33than anyone
22:34in it
22:34I must have
22:37fainted
22:38when I
22:39came to

22:42I was
22:42being lifted
22:43by a
22:43tall
22:44fair-haired
22:45young man
