00:30I was so excited for Imogen when she was selected into the Con High, one of the best music schools
00:43in the country. But now I'm losing faith in its capacity to prepare her for a future that
00:55becomes more uncertain and more frightening with every passing day.
01:17Outside, just behind the school, the flying foxes are waking, ready to fly out to forage
01:23amongst the city's figs and blossoming trees.
01:30I've been visiting this colony since they arrived here in the Botanic Gardens, a decade
01:35before Imogen was born. The wonder and beauty of their sudden appearance
01:40in the heart of the city, in their tens of thousands, filled me with hope that we were moving towards
01:46a better balance with the natural world. I've been thinking a lot about hope lately, how
01:53it can betray us, how it can be a form of denial. But as a parent, I just can't let it go.
