Bishop to elected officials: Stop bickering
Bishop Joel ‘Bong’ Baylon of the Diocese of Legazpi urged newly elected and reelected officials in Albay province to do away with political bickering and partisan politics as these are obstacles to public service and national development. He asked the elected officials to work together in addressing poverty, unemployment and security.

00:00We should acknowledge that this is a year, a jubilee year of hope, right?
00:06Our beloved Pope Francis declared this year as a jubilee year of hope.
00:13And so there is so much hope indeed that is in our experiences, in the events that are happening.
00:20And what is my hope for these newly elected officers?
00:24First of all, is to commit themselves to the real service for our people.
00:30For true development, progress, unity and peace.
00:34Secondly, I hope that they will do away with political bickerings, callers,
00:43but rather that they work together as true public servants of our community.
00:49Because if there is anything that becomes an obstacle or a reason for despair,
01:00in public service, it is always when officials continue to float their political preferences
01:09or their partisan politics becomes, in fact, a stumbling block.
01:16rather than the opportunity for service, the time that is given them,
01:26short though it may be an opportunity really to provide our people with jobs,
01:33our environment with new hope for the community to overcome the various social ills and difficulties,
01:45problems that we are facing, poverty for example, unemployment, lack of peace, drug addiction, security and peace.
01:56If I hope that our local leaders can really work together as friends, as brothers,
02:03and I'm sure the community will benefit much from that.
