00:00Hi everyone. In this video I'm going to do a quick demo of Duolingo and give you my thoughts on it.
00:09So you can install this as an app. I actually first started using this as an app in Android,
00:17but you can also go to duolingo.com and use the website. And I think it's quite a good app.
00:24And this is what the front page might look like. And you actually can have the choice of many different languages to learn.
00:36And actually you can learn additional languages as well. I don't think this shows all of them.
00:41But this just shows you the languages you can set the site in. But there's actually a lot of different languages you can learn.
00:49And if you already have an account, you can click there or get started and you can log in.
00:58This is what it might look like to log in. And I've used this for a while now. I've mostly used it to study Spanish.
01:09But I've also used it to study Mandarin, Chinese and also Latin. And actually you can use it to study.
01:21Let's see all the different languages you can try. There's a lot of different languages.
01:25Courses for English speakers. So you've got French, Japanese, German, Korean, Italian, Hindi, Turkish.
01:34And interestingly, there's Klingon. And there's Navajo. I think that's kind of cool.
01:43There's also Haitian Creole, which I think that seems kind of interesting.
01:48You've got Welsh, Esperanto, High Valyrian. Wow.
01:53So from Game of Thrones. I had no idea they had that. I think that's really cool.
01:58And it's interesting to me. They claim there's over two million people who study Latin.
02:05And I think, yeah, this is quite interesting.
02:09And regarding what I study, I just want to go, let's go through a quick lesson.
02:16This is Spanish. And I just wanted to show you what a quick lesson looks like.
02:20So it says, which one of these is one? Okay. And it gives you the option.
02:25This means book. This means one. This means two.
02:28Uno.
02:29And I'll choose uno. And I'll try to go through this quickly. This doesn't take too long.
02:33Which one of these is the books? Los libros.
02:37Los libros.
02:39Okay. Books. Libros.
02:43This means a pen, like a writing device. And this means France.
02:47Okay. Two is dos.
02:51Which one of these is three? Tres.
02:56Okay. Yo tengo tres libros.
02:59And there's also the option. Sometimes it actually asks you to speak.
03:09And the book. Okay. This is a good one.
03:12So one book is El Libro and two or more books is Los libros.
03:17El libro. Yo tengo un libro.
03:20So with these kind of exercises, you have to manually pick. It's like almost a word search.
03:25I have a book. And yeah, sometimes that's kind of fun.
03:30Rafael necesita un libro. Rafael necesita un libro.
03:35Okay. So I just, you listen to that. Rafael necesita un libro.
03:39And I, again, there's kind of like the word search. You have to pick the words.
03:42Dos, uno, cero.
03:44Okay. So she said, uh, zero, one, excuse me, two, one, zero.
03:53Okay. Yo tengo un cero en inglés.
03:56And let's see if the audio is going to work for this.
04:00Yo tengo un cero en inglés.
04:05Tengo cero dinero.
04:08So he says, uh, have zero dollars or I have zero dollars. The I is implied.
04:16Or, uh, dinero is, sorry. I have zero money.
04:23Rafael necesita bolígrafos.

04:29So it says, um, this person, Rafael, needs pens.
04:35Okay. And then we have this activity, which it's, it's also like, uh, it's a matching. It's also a game, sort of.
04:46Mañana.
04:47Europa. Usar.
04:50And I do find this kind of fun.
04:53And then this says, this is a hard exercise.
04:56So I would say, yes.
04:57I want two pens, please.
04:59Si.
05:00Yo quiero dos bolígrafos, por favor.
05:04Si.
05:05Yo quiero dos bolígrafos, por favor.
05:09Okay. Um, and then you can say, she has three pens. So, ella. Tiene. Tres bolígrafos.
05:21So I find that kind of fun. It's kind of the word search. And then you say, the man has three pens. El hombre. Tiene. Tres. Tres bolígrafos.
05:30And then, um, you know, it shows you, I, I've just done this. So I've been doing this for 83 days straight.
05:43And actually one of those days I might've missed, but there's a way that you can basically buy with gems or some other thing if you missed a day.
05:52Um, and this is kind of fun because you can compete against other people.
05:59And anyway, so this is what it looks like. Um, I just did one lesson there.
06:07And you have these different options. You can do practice. And unfortunately a lot of this is just for paid.
06:14So you have to pay. Super means paid.
06:17You do have one option. You have stories. Stories is good. You've got leaderboards, which is something I showed you. Quests.
06:23And that's, um, quests are basically just additional things you can do to get more points.
06:30All right. And, um, I mentioned about Spanish.
06:35Now I want to show you Chinese. I haven't used, um, this to study Chinese in a long time.
06:41But I do think it is pretty good. Um, so like this, this was, this says, and you can hover over the characters, which is nice.
06:54Now one thing that unfortunately they don't show for Chinese is they don't, I don't think that they show you how to actually write them.
07:05Okay, so this literally says, uh, he is my, like, 我的 means my, 同学 means classmate.
07:14Okay, and then classmate is 同学.
07:17It doesn't show you how to, um, 同学.
07:24Okay, so I'm gonna quit this. Um, I'm gonna go to Latin now.
07:32So just to show you a bit of Latin, I, I did use this a lot actually a while ago to study Latin.
07:38And I think it is pretty good to learn Latin.
07:41Um.
07:44Puer.
07:47Puella.
07:49Ego.
07:51Wir.
07:54Okay.
07:55Um, and um, cause there's not actually a lot of resources online to study Latin.
08:01And I think Duolingo is pretty good for that.
08:05Um.
08:06And I wanted to quickly go over some of the pros and cons of Duolingo.
08:09So, for me, the pros are that you can practice on your phone or via the website.
08:15I actually mostly use the app, but right now I'm showing you the website.
08:21Many features are free. It's gamified.
08:23So, one of the most appealing features is that at least a lot of it is kind of like a game.
08:29Or it feels like a game anyway.
08:31You know, because I showed you this one.
08:35Like, this is sort of, it feels kind of like a game.
08:38And then this is kind of a word search.
08:44So, you have to translate it.
08:46Like, es una universidad americana.
08:50And it doesn't just, often it won't just give you like, oh, that's the whole, like, it is an American university.
08:59You have to actually find it.
09:00So, it's like a word scramble and you're kind of working harder.
09:03And it makes it easy to practice the language you want.
09:09And that's super important.
09:11There's a lot of online or just apps you can use to practice.
09:16But sometimes they make it harder.
09:17And to me, honestly, the harder it is to use or practice, the less chance I will make a habit of it.
09:30And I'll go back to down here.
09:34So, there's many languages you can learn.
09:35And I think there's more than, I think I went over some of them.
09:41Yeah.
09:41So, you've got a lot of these.
09:49So, there's at least 40 languages you can learn.
09:51And there's probably actually more.
09:53If you're trying to study other languages, like I say, I speak, I say, I speak, uh, Deutsch, um, you can learn Chinese in, um, in German.
10:08You can learn Portuguese in German.
10:11And so on.
10:13And this is all languages, which I think is, uh, yeah.
10:16So, this has a lot of different, um, and this shows you, this is, um, so this is English.
10:26So, you, I guess this is that you, you know, Spanish and you're learning English.
10:32Let's see here.
10:33Uh, is it?
10:35Okay.
10:35So, this is for people who, I, I, I assume their, their first language is Spanish and, um, they're trying to learn English.
10:45So, this says, basically, your English level is very low.
10:50And this says, oh, I'm, like, really good at English.
10:54Uh, I can have simple conversations in English.
10:57So, for example, here, um, I'll just show you here.
11:02So, this is, like, um, you're learning English and your first language or the language you want to learn it from is Spanish, which I think is very cool.
11:12So, it says, which of these is T?
11:15Okay.
11:16Tea.
11:16Uh, so that's T.
11:18Okay.
11:19And then, uh, which of these is T?
11:22Tea.
11:22So, coffee, hello.
11:23Hello.
11:24I like this here.

11:29Uh, but I, I, I do think it's pretty good.

11:42So, it's asking you, this is, uh, you're, you're listening to the word and you're.

11:58Okay.
12:00And then we'll do, uh, continue here.

12:05So, I think that's quite cool.
12:08So, you have all these different languages you can, uh, you can use.
12:18And, um, so yeah, as I showed you before, you've got a lot of different options.
12:25And, if you wanted to choose all languages, you can go to courses slash ID.

12:32That's Indonesian.
12:33You can just go slash courses slash all.
12:36And, you can basically, uh, study many different languages.
12:42Right?
12:42And, let's say you wanted to learn English and Portuguese at the same time.
12:46So, this is, you're learning English and your language is Portuguese.
12:50You're learning, I assume this is Hindi.
12:53You're learning English and, um, your language is, uh, your first language is, is, is Mandarin.
13:02So, this says, like, I am, um, I'm first time studying English.
13:07And, this is like, I have a very good understanding of English.
13:11And, let's say, for example, my English is so-so.
13:16Okay.
13:17And, this says, which of these is English language?
13:21English.
13:23Okay.
13:23And, then, this, this is, uh, you've got all these different ones.
13:27And, this, this word, that means the English language.
13:30English.
13:31Chinese.
13:32Chinese.
13:33English.
13:34Okay.
13:34And, then, this is referring to, like, I assume this is the Chinese language and the
13:38English language.
13:39Okay.
13:40So, anyway, so that was that.
13:42And, uh, there's many languages.
13:43And, even if you have just five minutes, you can get benefit from it.
13:47So, here are some of the cons.
13:49You can't practice with a native speaker.
13:52Unfortunately, that, um, some apps you can practice with native speakers.
13:57You have, like, a competition, but you can't practice speaking.
14:00And, to me, that would be a big benefit if you could do that.
14:06And, then, sometimes lessons can be a bit boring.
14:08And, let's say, you, uh, you can't customize lessons.
14:14And, for me, one of the, uh, so many times the, the ads are way too long.
14:22Like, if you finish a lesson, sometimes, sometimes you have to, uh, sometimes have to watch ads
14:32for more than one minute after a successful lesson.
14:39So, to me, that's a bit annoying.
14:41Um, and if they could improve that, I think that would be great.
14:45Or, if they still have lessons, don't force you to watch it for so long for the ads.
14:50Okay.
14:50So, this is my overview of Duolingo.
14:52I hope you enjoyed it.
14:53It's a great app.
14:55And, at the very least, it's good for just practicing.
