00:00Hi, everyone. In this video, I'm going to talk about open source alternatives to Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint.
00:10I'll start out with LibreOffice, which has all three of those, and also Caligra.
00:16And then I'll discuss some softwares that are just alternatives to basically single Microsoft softwares like this one and these.
00:26And I think the softwares I discuss are great alternatives to Microsoft softwares.
00:32And let's get started.
00:34So first of LibreOffice, you can go to LibreOffice.org, and they also have a GitHub page.
00:40If you're interested to see the source code, you can go there.
00:44But generally, I think most people would just go to the website and download from here.
00:48And I think LibreOffice, honestly, is an excellent software.
00:54And let's get started.
00:56So I have a list of files, and I have some documents and some CSV files and presentations.
01:11And I'm going to show you all of these in LibreOffice.
01:15So the first one, this is an example Word document.
01:19I didn't make this.
01:20I just downloaded it from this URL.
01:23And this is actually a Microsoft Word document.
01:26But you can read it in LibreOffice Writer, which is kind of the open source alternative to Microsoft Word.
01:34It's quite good, and I think it's one of my favorites.
01:39And this is an example one that I saved it in the .odt.
01:44That's the default in Writer.
01:50But you can also save it as a Word document if you prefer .doc or docx.
01:56And the Microsoft Word alternative is quite fantastic.
02:00You can see here it's got text.
02:02And you can increase the font, for example.
02:04You can do pretty much anything you can do in Microsoft Word in here.
02:08But I think the design is much better here, and I actually far prefer this.
02:12Even if Microsoft Word wasn't proprietary, I still prefer LibreOffice Writer.
02:19I've used it for a long time.
02:22Now this is an alternative to Excel.
02:25This is LibreOffice Calc.
02:27And this is a CSV file.
02:30And note that I've got these different columns.
02:33This is for salary data.
02:35And we can, for example, build the header row.
02:40We can align the columns.
02:42We can sort.
02:43For example, let's say I want to sort by a custom sort.
02:47Let's say it contains column value.
02:51This says range contains column labels.
02:55And I would do that.
02:56And for example, let's say I wanted to sort the people by their yearly salary from highest to lowest.
03:02Could do it like this.
03:04So just like in an Excel.
03:06And these two softwares are the ones I use the most.
03:12I use Writer and Calc.
03:17I probably use Calc a little bit more, but I still like Writer.
03:21Both of them are softwares I use all the time.
03:25And this one here, the LibreOffice Impress, is kind of the open source alternative to PowerPoint.
03:34I think it's quite excellent.
03:37You can see here I have the first slide and then the next one.
03:43This is just Lorem Ipsum Latin text.
03:47And this one has an image.
03:49This is of the Alps.
03:51And here's an image of a cat.
03:53So LibreOffice, I highly recommend it.
03:56And again, you can go to LibreOffice.org.
03:58And if you want a full alternative to Microsoft Office, this is the one I would recommend the most.
04:04At least the one that you can use just on your own computer.
04:10Okay, now for OnlyOffice.
04:12I accidentally had left this out.
04:15I was actually using, I'm actually using OnlyOffice right now in this document.
04:19This is actually an OnlyOffice document.
04:22And you can go to OnlyOffice.com.
04:25And if you want, you can actually make an account with them and run the code on their servers.
04:32Or you can access and run the servers, make your own server.
04:37I'm not going to show you how to make your own server.
04:39But the GitHub repository has all the code you would need.
04:43And you can actually run this on your own server.
04:45And OnlyOffice is, it has documents, spreadsheets, like a PowerPoint alternative and more.
04:54And I'm going to show you some files here now.
05:00Okay, and as a reminder, this is actually OnlyOffice.
05:03This is kind of like Google Drive.
05:05There's a bunch of files here.
05:07And the presentation I was showing you, this is actually in OnlyOffice.
05:14Now, I want to show you here, again, it actually, that you can make documents and they default to .docx files.
05:23But you can also import files, for example, from LibreOffice.
05:28And here's an example.
05:29Again, this, I downloaded this from some website.
05:32And it's able to read it.
05:34And this is a file I made.
05:37And I intentionally left a misspelling here, just to show you that it has spellcheck.
05:46For example, here, I just changed that to chapter.
05:49This has an image, and it has pretty much anything.
05:53Okay, later I'm going to show you Abbey Word.
05:56This isn't Abbey Word.
05:57But let's say OnlyOffice.
06:00And I can increase the font size.
06:05Let's say I want it to be that, and I make it bold.
06:10And I definitely like OnlyOffice.
06:13It's also a great alternative to Google Docs.
06:19And then this is what a blank document might look like when you first make one.
06:23Okay, now let's go over the spreadsheets.
06:27So this is a document.
06:29I'm just importing the same document I was working on before.
06:33This is salary data.
06:35And you can do similar things like in LibreOffice.
06:39I don't know why it just added this.
06:42It seems to have, I don't know what it did to this data.
06:48I'll need to figure that out.
06:50But mostly the data, sometimes you might have issues like this, but they're pretty rare.
06:56And let's say I want to sort the data.
06:58For example, sort custom sort.
07:03You can do that.
07:05You can sort by, for example, yearly salary.
07:11Sort by the values and descending.
07:14Okay, so that goes from highest to lowest.
07:17So, and this is what a blank spreadsheet might look like.
07:21And then here is what a presentation, the same presentation.
07:25I had before, but this is in OnlyOffice.
07:28So I think, again, OnlyOffice is a fantastic software.
07:33It's open source.
07:34But if you don't want to set up your own server, you can just use the website OnlyOffice.com.
07:38I think it's quite fantastic.
07:40Okay, now I'm going to move on to Calligra.
07:44Okay, now about Calligra.
07:49If you go to calligra.org, you can find out about this.
07:53It's made by KDE.
07:55And they have a GitHub page, but I think their most up-to-date software is on their website at this link.
08:02And now I'm going to show you the same files that I showed you in LibreOffice, but now with Calligra.
08:15Okay, and Calligra, the Microsoft Word alternative is called Words.
08:23So they just added an S to it, I guess.
08:26Now, the initial design is kind of annoying to me.
08:28I don't like this whatever this is.
08:31But you can move it.
08:34I just moved it away.
08:36And I think it's pretty good, I think.
08:40I do think that this is not bad.
08:44And you can also, and I'm showing you opening it with Words.
08:51And this is the same file I was working on with the other documents.
08:57And we're not in Abbey Word.
08:59We're in Calligra Words.
09:04I think that this is, you know, something to check out, Calligra Words.
09:09I still prefer LibreOffice over this, but if you have no other options, I think the LibreWords is pretty good.
09:15Now let's go over the, their version of a spreadsheet.
09:22It's just called Sheets.
09:24Here's the same data as before.
09:27See here, this is Celery data.
09:30And, okay.
09:37Okay, this briefly crashed for a moment.
09:39I don't know why it did.
09:41But, Calligra Sheets seems interesting, although I haven't used it that much.
09:47And then let's go over their sort of PowerPoint alternative.
09:52So I have the same presentation.
09:55And again, I'm going to move this.
09:56This is, I find these menus kind of annoying.
09:59So I'll move them away.
10:00You can see the same slides as before.
10:05This was of the Alps.
10:08This is a cat.
10:09And here's some Lorem Ipsum.
10:13Okay.
10:14So I think Calligra is, you know, something worth checking out.
10:19It's not my favorite, but it is an open source alternative to Microsoft Office.
10:24Okay.
10:25Now I'm going to talk about something that's Microsoft only, Microsoft Word only.
10:30So it doesn't have all three of those.
10:32And I'm going to show you EbiWord.
10:37Okay.
10:38So EbiWord doesn't seem to be as actively developed as other ones.
10:42But you can go here to check out the code if you're interested.
10:45But you can easily install it if you're using Ubuntu, for example.
10:50And I want to show you a file.
10:53This is in EbiWord.
10:56And it's a similar file as before.
11:00And I just noticed this.
11:02I didn't notice it before.
11:03But I wasn't able to open a .docx file.
11:08I was only able to open a .doc file.
11:12So maybe it has some more limitations than the other ones.
11:15But this is an alternative to Microsoft Word.
11:19And they have their default as...
11:26They have...
11:27It saves it as EbiWord.
11:30So ABW files.
11:35Okay.
11:36And now I'm going to talk about some alternatives to Microsoft Excel.
11:43Okay.
11:44First I'm going to talk about IronCalc.
11:46And you can go to ironcalc.com.
11:48It looks like this.
11:49And you can actually try out ironcalc at app.ironcalc.com.
11:55And I just put the same data in as before.
11:58So you can actually run this without an account.
12:01And I think it's worth trying out.
12:04I've made a previous video about ironcalc.
12:06I think ironcalc is quite good.
12:08But if you prefer to run ironcalc on your own server, you can do that.
12:12And they have a GitHub repository.
12:15And you can use the code to run your own server.
12:19Okay.
12:20Next I'm going to show you GNU Meric.
12:23And this is another alternative to Excel.
12:28And you can go to this website to check it out if you're interested or they have their own repository.
12:38And now this is what the same file, the same data looks like in GNU Meric.
12:45And you can, for example, auto-align the columns.
12:50You can sort with data sort.
12:53It took me actually a little bit to figure this out.
12:57But for example, if I wanted to sort by the yearly salary, remove all these.
13:02And this gives you the option to sort, for example, descending.
13:06Or actually, I guess that's sorting ascending.
13:09I would have need to have changed the arrow direction.
13:13So that's GNU Meric.
13:16And now I'm going to discuss some PowerPoint-only alternatives.
13:26Okay.
13:27And some PowerPoint-only alternatives.
13:30If you go to, we'll first talk about reveal.js.
13:34So reveal.js has a GitHub page.
13:37And you can run it on your own server if you're interested.
13:41And unfortunately, they don't really have a demo page so much that you can actually edit.
13:45But you can watch a slide.
13:47You can watch a demo.
13:48And this is, I'm about to show you here.
13:53So their demo page, you can scroll with the,
13:57I'm using an arrow key.
14:00And this is, I think it's an interesting presentation.
14:04Again, I'm using an arrow key to go through this.
14:07So this is a reveal.js, their sort of demo.
14:10But unfortunately, you can't actually edit it without,
14:12you're going to have to run your own server.
14:14And then now, I'm going to show you impress.js.
14:20So impress.js also has a GitHub page.
14:23And it might be less active than reveal.js because there's a lot newer things here.
14:30But anyway, impress.js has a GitHub page.
14:33And if you go to their website, impress.js.org, you can,
14:38there's also sort of a demo.
14:40You can, it says use a space car or arrow keys to navigate.
14:44So I think this is kind of cool.
14:49Okay.
14:50So these were open source alternatives to Microsoft Office.
14:54I hope you enjoyed it.
