00:00Je vais faire un peu de tactiques qui peuvent gagner ou gagner en l'event final.
00:03C'est très très très très très duré, je ne peux pas faire ça.
00:06Oh my days.
00:29mais Slingsby's got the faster angle in to mark one.
00:33Oh, what a start.
00:34Fletcher's at absolute speed on the inside.
00:37So this was decision time for Tom Slingsby.
00:39He's leading the boats back into the start box.
00:42One more manoeuvre to do
00:43before he judges his run into the start line.
00:46The advantage of being in the lead,
00:47well, you get to dictate how the start's gonna play out
00:50and that's classic Tom Slingsby.
00:51He loves to be the one making the decision
00:54and letting other people react.
00:55He turned back too early
00:57and you've got what's called time to kill.
00:59So you know if you sailed at full speed,
01:01you'd be early for the line.
01:02Well, your only option there is to slow down
01:04and if you slow down,
01:05it gives those boats opportunity behind
01:08to come and attack you.
01:10Right now, Slingsby's the defender.
01:12Giles Scott on board the Canadian boat, he's attacking.
01:15And right at the moment where the two boats
01:17are on a collision course,
01:18which is coming up to us here on the screen right now,
01:21Australia needs to start avoiding.
01:23Slow to react by Slingsby
01:25and that was there the moment he got the penalty
01:27and they were tight together.
01:28They've been affecting each other.
01:29If we pause the action here
01:31and we see how early those two boats are
01:33compared to the British boat,
01:34they're gonna have to go pretty slow
01:36in these last few moments to the start line.
01:39Fletcher, well, he's got space.
01:41He knows he's on a good time run for the start line.
01:43He's got a big gap in the middle of the fleet
01:46and he winds it up.
01:47He starts to aim straight at the line,
01:49straight towards mark one
01:51and his wing, his trimmers, the whole crew on board
01:54are calling good timing, good timing.
01:56So when that line does turn white,
01:58he hits it at full speed right in the middle of the fleet.
02:01But the crucial factor for Fletcher was he was going fast
02:04and that was because he wasn't too early
02:07turning back towards the start line.
02:10Let's go back to the moment Canada engage with Australia.
02:14We can see Canada turn their boat.
02:16They're on a collision course with Australia.
02:18Closest to the wind, so they're the giveaway boat
02:21in this situation.
02:22Seems we've got two options.
02:23He's hoping to get round in front of Giles Scott,
02:26the Canadian boat,
02:27to keep his options open on the start line.
02:29But he's got a huge area he could turn up into
02:32away from Giles Scott.
02:33He could take that right turn,
02:35head away from the Canadian boat and keep the gap open.
02:38He's compromised,
02:39but it's gotta be better to avoid a penalty if he can,
02:42because by taking that penalty,
02:44he loses any chance of an equal start
02:46and means he's definitely gonna have to start the race behind
02:49and he's on the back foot.
02:51Well, things were happening fast here in Sydney
02:54and as we now can see, the two boats are overlapped.
02:56What does that mean?
02:57Well, it means the Canadian boat's alongside.
02:59It's just got the front of its boat
03:01past the back of the Australian boat.
03:03They're overlapped.
03:04They're also now on a collision course
03:06and as soon as you're on a collision course,
03:08you've got to keep clear as the giveaway boat.
03:10Racing rules of sailing say the boat's closest to the wind,
03:13we call it the windward boat, is the giveaway boat.
03:16So Slingsby knows he's gotta keep clear,
03:18but looking through his eyes,
03:21does he think they're overlapped?
03:22They're travelling at nearly 70, 75 kilometres an hour here.
03:26The boat's some 20, 30 metres away from each other.
03:30The front of Giles Scott's boat is 15, 17 metres away
03:33from where he sits in the boat.
03:35So to judge where the front of that boat is
03:37is really hard at these speeds.
03:39Slingsby was hoping he wasn't overlapped in the umpire booth.
03:43Well, they're looking from directly above.
03:45They've got that helicopter 2D view
03:47that's accurate to about a centimetre out there.
03:50So they can see all of this detail
03:53coming really, really quickly onto their screen.
03:55They see it in very black and white
03:56and on the water, well, there's a lot of other things to see.
03:59So those minutity can easily be missed.
04:01But right now, Slingsby's a little bit too aggressive.
04:04He needs to start taking avoiding action from Giles Scott,
04:07or be very confident he can get across in front of him.
04:11He couldn't get across in front.
04:12He didn't take any avoiding action until too late.
04:15And that was deemed to be too risky.
04:18Big chance for collision.
04:19Canada had to avoid that collision,
04:21so the penalty was dished out to Slingsby.
04:23He could have avoided it with a turn away
04:25from Canada a lot earlier
04:26and given himself the chance to start that race level.
04:29Here we go.
04:30One.
04:31Hey, racing.
04:32Protest it, Eddie.
04:33Here's subject, big A's for racing.
04:34Racing, racing.
04:35Canada have decided to turn back to the start quite earlier,
04:38a similar time to Australia.
04:39They put themselves into fairly direct competition
04:43with the Australians.
04:44Now, in this situation, rules-wise,
04:46no real risk on the Canadians.
04:48But as soon as you're distracted by another boat,
04:51you're getting yourself too close to the line too soon
04:54to have a chance to give a big acceleration.
04:56We can see on the right-hand side of them,
04:58Great Britain quite well behind.
05:00No one else other than themselves to think about
05:03from a timing perspective back towards the start line.
05:05So rules-wise, there was no risk on Canada
05:08in this situation, really.
05:09They were the right-of-way boat.
05:11Australia were the ones that needed to keep clear.
05:13But as soon as you're in a direct battle with the Australians,
05:16you're sailing back towards the line too fast, too early,
05:20and you're limiting your options for later in the start.
05:26What a start.
05:27Fletcher's at absolute speed.
05:28On the inside, it's Canada.
05:30Emirates, Great Britain are gonna be able to lead
05:32at mark one here.
05:34This start, we can see all of the boats ended up lined up,
05:38much more similar timing back to the start line.
05:41So once again, Slingsby loves that move
05:43of being the first to turn back to the start.
05:45But we see all three boats turning back at a similar time.
05:49Plenty of respect out there on the start line in this one.
05:52Not too much boat-on-boat confrontation.
05:54All of them giving themselves a little bit of space.
05:56And of course, space is so key in this final run-in
06:00to be able to control your own destiny and your old timing.
06:02No boat too close together.
06:04Right, now it's just a race to hit that right-hand red line
06:08on the right-hand side of our screen there.
06:10Theoretically, Fletcher, optimally placed.
06:13Lined up for the pole position here.
06:14But we know that it's all about speed when the gun comes.
06:17So who can time their run at the start line fastest?
06:20They're all gonna have a straight line.
06:22Not too much boat-on-boat confrontation.
06:24But Fletcher a bit closer to the line at this moment.
06:26A little bit later to accelerate.
06:28And that's the difference in boat speed when the gun goes.
06:35Pretty much picture perfect from those first two boats
06:38into the line here, but a faster angle for Australia.
06:41Fletcher makes one last aggressive move.
06:43Windward boat must keep clear, of course.
06:45We've heard that one before, haven't we?
06:46But this time Slingsby does enough.
06:48Just.
06:49He's round the front.
06:50Leads at mark one.
06:51All the way down.
06:52All the way down.
06:53All the way down.
06:54All the way down.
06:56Let's freeze frame here and look back at the start.
06:58We can see on this start the boat is not too interactive.
07:01Not a very combative start here.
07:03And that's all to do with the set up of the start line.
07:05Often we see one position on the start.
07:08It's indicated there is the pole position on our start line.
07:11The blue triangles.
07:12But it won't be biased by much.
07:14So if you start there, you're gonna have less distance to mark one.
07:18If you start nearer the bottom of our screen to the upwind end of the start line,
07:22you've got a faster angle.
07:23And there's not a lot of difference there.
07:25So despite there being a pole position, there's not a lot in it.
07:28So all the crews have decided, let's not fight too hard.
07:31It's a windy day.
07:33Gusty.
07:33Hard to sail the boats here in New Zealand.
07:35And penalty points for any interactions can be really costly.
07:39We all know that from watching SailGP Racing.
07:42So all the boats decide, let's give ourselves some space.
07:45That space means it's just a race between them and the start line.
07:48We don't need to worry too much about the other boats.
07:51How well can we judge our timing as we turn towards the start line,
07:55wind the speed up, and look to hit that line at the moment it turns white at full speed.
08:02As soon as it's as windy as this, all the crews will be thinking,
08:04what's my safest angle to sail in?
08:06If I'm sailing too across the wind, can I handle the power of that?
08:10If I can turn a little bit away from the wind, I might be going faster.
08:13But again, can I fly the boat accurately at that high speed?
08:16For the British team, they would have been thinking right now,
08:19well, all things being equal, at least if I'm on the downwind end,
08:22I'm on the inside at turn one.
08:24That's one fact, one controllable thing I've got.
08:27The other boats have got to go fast enough to get right round me
08:30if they want to lead at mark one for Slingsby.
08:33Well, he's thinking, okay, I'm going to have the fastest angle.
08:35I'm just going to send my boat at mark one as absolutely flat out as I can,
08:40and trust flight controller Jason Waterhouse to keep me in the water.
08:43That's it from me with Risk and Reward.
08:47Look forward to bringing you another episode soon.
