00:00They say job hunting can be one of the most stressful things
00:04that a person goes through in their life.
00:05And most people only do that, hopefully, a handful of times in their lives.
00:10Actors basically spend any time they're not acting,
00:14applying for jobs through the form of auditions.
00:18Do you, as was mentioned, some people are still in love with the self-tape or auditioning.
00:24What are your feelings about auditions? And I'm sure they don't all go fantastic.
00:28Do you have any horror stories that you feel like you learned from or didn't learn from?
00:33So this was about a couple of years ago. I'm from LA and there was this
00:39huge, as LA has, heat wave, 118 degrees outside. Two days before a chemistry read that I was going
00:48to be having on Zoom, my AC went out. So I was basically half alive. It was so hot in my house.
00:56We were outside in our garage where the only AC was working. It was miserable. I could not think.
01:02And so, you know, I was like, okay, you know, this chemistry read is coming up. I'll be fine.
01:07And it was a chemistry read with Adam driver on a zoom meeting. And
01:10you could tell I was tired and it, and it didn't, it showed. And I really regret not stepping out of
01:22the house. I should have gone to a space that had AC where I could have been well rested and I was
01:28prepared and ready. And so I still did end up getting a role on that project. I got to play his
01:33daughter, which actually was, um, very enjoyable. And I, and I loved that role. So in a way it worked
01:39out well, but I think making sure you're in a good mindset and a good space before you do a chemistry
01:45read, especially on zoom, um, make sure you're comfortable and not don't do what I did. Cause that,
01:51that was not, it's not a fun process, not a fun experience.
01:54Be good to your body. Be good to your mind. Anyone else have any particularly, uh, hairy auditions?
02:02It's not terrible, but I had just been on a world tour, uh, as a dancer with Sia and we were doing,
02:11um, our tour and we recently had just performed. We did like two nights at the Hollywood bowl.
02:16And I think it was, I had like a day or so off in LA after those shows. And I went into an audition
02:22with, uh, a very scary casting director. Uh, and I walked in and I felt so prepared in that moment.
02:34And so I was like, I'm going to kill this. I was obviously tired due to being on tour, but I was
02:38like, I felt very ready and prepared in that moment. And she was like, I actually just watched you
02:43perform at the Hollywood bowl last night. So don't mess it up. And I was like, in that moment, I literally
02:48lost every line in my head. I was like, I, I, my mind went blank because I just was so intimidated
02:54and I was 14 and I was so nervous. And within that moment, I literally lost everything. And I didn't
03:00have my pages in hand and I was just like staring at her with nothing. I was like, I I'm so sorry.
03:07And then she handed me lines and I was so embarrassed in that moment. There was nothing I could have done,
03:14but I, I don't know. I just think that's a little intimidating for someone to do. And I don't know,
03:18it's just scary and not something that like, I don't like when people like, I think a lot of
03:23people in the industry sometimes purposely try and mess with you to see if you can still like
03:27be on and ready. And in that moment, I, I totally crumbled. So yeah, it wasn't great.
03:33How many actors are in here?
03:38Okay. All right. A few. All right. Yeah.
03:41Are you, do you guys all go to SCAD? Okay. Sweet. I just made sure. I don't know if there's
03:46any outsiders here. You're going to go on a lot of auditions, like a ton of auditions,
03:52like before, before, um, self tapes really existed. Like when you got a self tape, you're like,
03:58Oh, okay. Yeah, this is nice. And then you get six at a time and you're like, Oh my gosh,
04:04like, how am I going to do this? Um, but I would say you have to kind of just be ready for
04:09everything, every situation. I remember once I was telling my family this morning,
04:14I was auditioning for a horror film
04:19and I was waiting in the lobby, then was taken to the next lobby. And then it was time, you know,
04:25to have the appointment and the casting director or the associate took me into an active office like
04:32this just with, you know, lots of desks and stuff. And then we're in a corner. And so everybody's
04:37still going about their day, making phone calls, chatting. And I'm in the corner, like about to do
04:43this, like screamy, the omen type of project. And she's like, okay, just right here. And I was like,
04:51like, what? Like just here. She's like, yeah, yeah. Just between the sheets and like just two
04:57sheets on the wall. And like, okay. And I, I, I, I did it, you know, but it was one of the,
05:04it was like a scary moment because there's like 30 people in the office. You're screaming. There's
05:08like a fake something chasing after you. There's sheets that like have been torn off the wall because
05:14you're on the wall. And so you just kind of, you just have to be ready for all this stuff. It's like,
05:18um, like Emma Stone in, in, uh, La La Land. It's kind of like that. Um, the amount of outfit changes
05:24you have to bring in your car because you need a car in Los Angeles. Don't even try it without one.
05:30Um, four outfit chains a day, commercial outfit changes. Uh, if you're doing a go see, you have
05:35to have like, you know, a model outfit. So it's, it's a lot. So I would just say the nightmare is
05:41auditioning. There's also nothing like having to play like a possessed character in a self tape. You
05:48feel so crazy. Like, I don't know. I can't pull from real experience. So like your friend is
05:53watching you and they're like, that was good. That was good. Just like, can you like have your
05:56eyes roll behind your head? Like at that moment you're like, Oh, like at this part, like, yeah,
06:01but there's really no dialogue. It's just like tons of, um, stage direction, stage direction.
06:07You're like, okay. Yeah. Like they give you a page for your audition with two lines and the rest is like,
06:12just find the white space. So yeah, it's just, it's tough. I do all myself tapes in my bedroom,
06:18like with my best friend. And like, we have our setup. She's not like that to me. She's very
06:23supportive. Yeah. Wait, have you been in a casting room yet? No, I guess I've only joined the like
06:30industry post COVID. So I've only done zoom ever. Like, cause it's just not an option. Everything I've
06:35done is on zoom. And so it's usually, she's either my reader or the casting director is the reader. And
06:40I'm like, everything, everyone's been lovely. What the hell? Yeah.
