00:00Two policemen pleaded not guilty at a magistrate's court in Georgetown on Tuesday for allegedly

00:07extorting a special officer to a state executive councillor in March this year.

00:13Sergeant Sharizal Ali, aged 46, and Corporal Fazli Jamaluddin, aged 34, were jointly charged

00:20with deliberately extorting Mandi Liaojia Hui with the threat of arrest, inducing her to

00:25hand over 1,000 ringgit to them.

00:28The offence was allegedly committed at Jalan Anson, in front of the Penang Buddhist Association,

00:34at 2.25 a.m. on March 14.

00:37Both accused, who were attached to the Georgetown Police Headquarters, were charged under Section

00:42384 of the Penal Code.

00:44They face a maximum prison term of ten years, with fines, whipping, or any combination of

00:50the above if convicted.

00:52Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Daniel Amir Sa'ad offered bail at RM6,000 each in one surety.

00:59Lawyer Kay Mahendran, representing both accused, appealed for lower bail.

01:05He said his clients have dependents to care for.

01:08Sharizal has four children, while Fazli has three.

01:11The court fixed bail at RM5,000 each in one surety, and fixed June 24 for next mention.
