00:00On May the 16th, 2025, the FDA cleared a new blood test that could change the way we diagnose Alzheimer's disease.
00:10It is called the LumiPulse G P-TAL-217 to Beta Amyloid 142 Plasma Ratio Test, a long name for a powerful tool.
00:23This test is designed for persons over the age of 55 who show signs of cognitive decline.
00:31Until now, diagnosing Alzheimer's has relied on memory tests, spinal fluid analyses, and costly brain scans known as PET scans.
00:42But now, with a simple blood test, doctors can get important clues as to whether Alzheimer's is present, and they can do it earlier and easier.
00:55This means fewer invasive tests, faster results, and more access for patients, even outside of specialist clinics.
01:04Still, it is important to know that this is not a standalone test.
01:10It still must be used alongside a full clinical evaluation by a medical provider.
01:17Why does early detection matter?
01:20Because the medications we have today work better in early stages of the disease.
01:26And the test may help catch Alzheimer's before it progresses, when treatments can still make a difference.
01:35It may even help doctors track the progress of the disease and how well treatments are working over time.
01:44So how does the test work?
01:46It looks at two proteins that build up in the blood of patients with Alzheimer's.
01:50The P-tau-217 and the beta-amyloid-142.
01:59In Alzheimer's disease, amyloid builds up in between the cells, and this triggers the tau proteins to clump together inside the cells,
02:09forming what are called neurofibrillary tangles.
02:13These changes, plaques and tangles, are the hallmarks of the disease.
02:19The Lumi-pulse test measures the ratio of these two proteins in the blood,
02:25and this tells doctors how likely it is that these changes are already happening in the brain.
02:32This breakthrough brings Alzheimer's testing one step closer to being faster, easier, and more accessible,
02:41giving patients the answers they need sooner.
