Could your street be the next to introduce permit-only parking? New resident parking
00:07
zones may soon be on their way to several Bristol neighbourhoods, with plans aimed at easing pressure
00:14
on local streets and discouraging commuting parking. Bristol City Council is looking again
00:22
at areas like Bishopston, St Andrews, St Werberks, Ashley Down, Totterdown, Windmill Hill and Bedminster.
00:29
These places were originally earmarked for schemes over ten years ago, but never made
00:35
it past the planning stage. Totterdown, for example, still struggles with commuters leaving
00:41
their cars on residential roads. The zones would work like existing schemes already in place across
00:49
parts of the city. Residents with a permit can park near their homes, while non-residents,
00:55
especially those commuting to work or shop or socialise in the city would face restrictions.
01:03
In a report going to the Transport Policy Committee on Thursday 15 May, council officers state,
01:11
residents' parking schemes aim to reduce car use by restricting parking options for commuting traffic.
01:17
They are focused on areas around the city centre, where commuters may seek to drive in for further afield.
01:26
The move is part of a wider South Bristol liveable neighbourhood project. It could also include new
01:32
traffic, calming measures like turning rat runs into cul-de-sacs. A similar scheme has already
01:39
launched in East Bristol, and a public consultation is due next month.
