Under the White Paper proposals, migrants will have to spend 10 years in the UK before being able to apply for citizenship, but so-called “high-contributing” individuals such as doctors and nurses could be fast-tracked through the system. Language requirements will be increased for all immigration routes to ensure a higher level of English. Report by Gluszczykm. 00:00Now, in a diverse nation like ours, and I celebrate that, these rules become even more important.
00:08Without them, we risk becoming an island of strangers, not a nation that walks forward together.
00:16So as this white paper sets out, every area of the immigration system, work, family and study,
00:24will be tightened up so we have more control, skill requirements raised to degree level,
00:32English language requirements across all routes, including for dependents,
00:38the time it takes to acquire settled status, extended from five years to ten,
00:44and enforcement tougher than ever, because fair rules must be followed.
00:49Now, make no mistake, this plan means migration will fall.
00:56That's a promise.
00:58But I want to be very clear on this.
01:00If we do need to take further steps, if we do need to do more to release pressure on housing and our public services,
01:09then mark my words, we will.
