Thousands of people lined up near the Yarra River in Melbourne early this morning to run or walk in the annual Mother's Day classic. It's an event known for its vibrant pink, raising money and awareness of breast cancer and ovarian cancer.
00:00Counting down, a sea of pink taking off, running, walking and even crawling along the tan.
00:14Nearly 45,000 took part in Mother's Day classic events around Victoria, about 27,000 in Melbourne.
00:22Can I wish all the mums of Melbourne a very happy Mother's Day? We love you, we appreciate you.
00:30Raising money for breast and ovarian cancer research, it's a mix of participants.
00:37Some personally affected, Stephen taking part for the first time since losing his wife to breast cancer late last year.
00:46Hopefully one day someone doesn't go through what I've got to go through.
00:49My wife was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer a couple of weeks ago after returning from beating it four years ago.
00:55She's waiting at the finish line, she's physically not able to, so I'm walking for her today.
01:02I am now two years in the clear from breast cancer.
01:05An embrace and honour walk, observing a minute of silence to remember those touched by the cancers.
01:12Across the country, 90,000 people took part across 85 events.
01:18It's a fantastic community event that really wraps its arms around people who are dealing with breast cancer and really honours those who have been lost to breast cancer.
01:27More than $47 million has been raised for breast cancer research since the Mother's Day classic began in 1998.
01:34The event expanding to also support ovarian cancer research just last year.
01:41We really haven't seen the same number of steps forward on the research front and the survival rates as we have with breast cancer.
01:49So I thought it was time for us to throw our arms around ovarian cancer as well.
