00:00Birmingham City Council is set to push ahead with controversial plans to introduce parking charges at three beauty spots in the region.
00:08This comes despite some backlash from residents.
00:11Earlier in the year, the council passed another budget which included waves of savings and some cuts to services.
00:18A council report has revealed that a consultation was held recently on the plans,
00:23which showed a significant proportion were not in favour of the proposed parking charges.
00:28The report showed that 919 respondents of the consultation felt access to the park should remain free,
00:37though the council is still planning to proceed with the proposals.
00:41In the council report, it was stated that the introduction of parking charges is often controversial and unpopular,
00:48as users are asked to pay for something that has previously been free.
00:51However, the projected income from parking charges still falls short of the cost of maintaining the three parks in question.
00:59The council report added that it is deemed reasonable to ask park users to contribute financially to the upkeep and maintenance of these parks.
01:08The parks where parking charges are set to come into effect are Sutton Park,
01:13Lickie Hills Country Park and Sheldon Country Park.
01:16The report said that despite the introduction of parking charges,
01:21there will still be a requirement for financial support from the council's general fund to maintain and manage these parks.
01:29It went on to say that charges across destination sites throughout the UK has become common practice.
01:35The report said introducing charges on Birmingham sites will be in line with national best practice
01:41to offset the cost of maintaining these destination sites.
