The focus of the major parties as campaigning wraps up

00:00In the final days of this campaign, the closing arguments have, unsurprisingly, returned to

00:08the cost of living.

00:09Today's inflation numbers help Labor's argument.

00:12The worst is now over and better days are ahead.

00:15While not giving advice to the Reserve Bank, the Treasurer is not so subtly pointing to

00:20expectations of several rate cuts to come.

00:23For his part, Peter Dutton's return to that famous question, are you better off?

00:28It was a potent line used against incumbent governments everywhere when inflation was

00:33at its peak.

00:34It's been less successful since then, including in this week's Canadian election, where voters

00:39stuck with the incumbent.

00:41In a sign the Coalition needs something more than just a focus on cost of living, the opposition

00:46leader was also jogging memories of the failed voice referendum and a time when the majority

00:51of Australians disagreed with the Prime Minister.

00:54Labor's rejected any suggestion.

00:55It would seek to revive the voice, but the fate of the Uluru Statement remains uncomfortable

01:01territory for Labor.

01:02Whether it's still an issue for voters, however, is less clear.
