00:23Hi and welcome to In the Doghouse with Gloria. I'm Kristen Herman, this of course is Gloria.
00:28And with us is Wolf from Justice Rescue and we're talking about September. It's Lost and Found Pet Month.
00:34And so when you find a pet, and this could happen to anyone, you don't have to have a pet yourself,
00:39what do you do when you find an animal, a stray animal on the street? What's your first step?
00:43First thing you need to think about is safety. Safety for the dog, safety for you, safety for others.
00:49Our first instinct may be to just run to the dog. They don't know you, you don't know what you might be running into, the fear or what.
00:57The first thing you want to do is analyze to see if the dog is going to come over to you, what kind of body language, things like that and get it into a safe place.
01:04And once you realize that, you know, this dog looks pretty approachable or the dog just runs right up to you and is licking your face, what's your next step then? Who would you call?
01:12You want to check the collar to see if there's any tags on the collars that might indicate who the owners are and also be able to check for a microchip.
01:20You can't do that yourself. You need to take the dog, if safe, to a vet or rescue to be able to scan that microchip.
01:26And most vets or rescues could do that for you?
01:28Absolutely.
01:29Awesome. And so I would guess that as far as a pet owner and having a lost pet, something to prevent that would probably be those tags in the microchip then?
01:38That's right. I can, you know, we pick up hundreds of dogs each year from strays and people didn't think that it was going to happen to them and they procrastinated on getting the microchip.
01:48Their microchip is only about $20 to have it implanted. So it's definitely well worth that.
01:54Definitely. Inexpensive. And about how soon could you have your pet back with you then after that?
01:59You know, if you have the tags on the collar or the microchip, generally you can have the dog back within 15 or 20 minutes after we find the dog because we know where to go.
02:07Otherwise, we have to take it to the shelter and then the dog has to wait for you to find him or her at the shelter and that could be a while if you do ever find her.
02:16Oh, my gosh. And when you lose a pet for five seconds, it feels like a day for sure.
02:20Yes.
