Transcript
00:00Hey Shabbat Shalom brothers and sisters, welcome back. I thank you again for joining me for this episode and I just wanted to do an introduction on the Old Testament book of the prophet Obadiah.
00:13So for all you guys that know about Obadiah, this might be a refresher for you. People that don't know who Obadiah is or want to know a background about him and his book, I'm here to let you know. So anyways, we'll get down to it.
00:32Now, the composition date here, the date of composition and prophecy is difficult to determine. Several dates are offered ranging from the 7th to 10th centuries. Based on the evidence, the most likely date would be the earliest estimate near the time of the prophet Jeremiah and the Babylonian exile.
00:53Okay, talk about the author here. Very little is known about Obadiah. The Bible does not identify the name of his father or place of birth, but his name does mean servant of Yahweh.
01:07And here's a little background for you. This book is the fourth of the 12 minor prophets. Minor not meaning the message is, you know, less worth, but because of the shorter length of the prophecies.
01:21All 12 books share the same name, which mean the 12. Obadiah's prophecy focuses on the judgment of Edom. The roots of Edom hearken back to Esau, which was Jacob's brother, the twin brother of Jacob.
01:40And from the beginning, there was strife between these brothers and this taught, this theme continued throughout their long history.
01:49And if you can find this stuff in Genesis chapter 27, verses 41 to 45, Genesis 32, 1 to 21, Genesis 33 and 36, other verses, Exodus 15, verse 15, Numbers chapter 20, verse 14 to 21, Deuteronomy chapter 2, verses 1 through 6,
02:17Deuteronomy 23, Deuteronomy 23, Deuteronomy 23, verse 7.
02:21Then you go to 1 Samuel 22, 1 Samuel 22, and you go to 2 Samuel 8, 13 to 14, 2 Kings chapter 8, verses 20 to 22.
02:362 Kings would be 14 verse 7
02:41then you go to Psalms 83, Ezekiel
02:4535, Joel chapter 3 verse 18
02:49to 19, Amos chapter 1 verses 11 to 12
02:53and then chapter 9
02:56verse 12. Because of Edom's
03:01continual strife and attitude towards Israel and their calamity
03:05Obadiah prophesies of Edom's destruction and
03:09offers little hope of future forgiveness and blessings
03:12it should be noted however that this prophecy does not describe
03:17the extinction of Edom or the destruction of Esau
03:21scripture states that every nation that fears Yahweh
03:25is acceptable to him. You can find that in the book of Acts
03:29in the New Testament chapter 10 verses 34 and 35
03:33scriptural significance here is perhaps
03:37more than any other lesson we see here
03:41the result of arrogance towards Yahweh's people
03:44the Israelis
03:46Israel was and remains the apple of Yahweh's eye
03:50which you find that quote in Zechariah chapter 2 verse 8
03:54even though they have throughout time rebelled and faced serious consequences
04:00they endure a special people unto their heavenly father
04:05and the outline of the book here
04:08I mean down here says you know chapter 1
04:121 through 9 is Edom's impending judgment
04:15chapter 1 10 through 14 is Edom's violence against his brother
04:20and finally chapter 1 15 verse 15 verses 15 to 21
04:27the day of Yahweh and Israel's triumph is victory
04:31so that's pretty much the book sums up the book of Obadiah
04:37and I encourage you guys to study up on that book
