00:00I'm Father Paul Farne from St. Eugene's Cathedral.

00:04Father, how is the news of Pope Francis Passant had you today?

00:08I think it's very sad. It's a very sad day.

00:11The Pope was a remarkable man.

00:13He gave remarkable leadership in the world and in the Church.

00:16And he was a man who was so full of joy and so full of duty and service.

00:22And we saw that yesterday when he still managed to come and give his blessing

00:26and how he travelled around St. Peter's Square yesterday, obviously,

00:30in great discomfort to him, but focus always on others.

00:35Can you share some of your thoughts on the Pope Francis Passant?

00:39What did you think of him as?

00:41I thought he was a wonderful Pope. He was a gift from God.

00:44I think he was a man for the time that we have lived through.

00:48I think he led us in a very powerful way, both in the Church and in the world,

00:55being the moral leader of the world and the man who had the greatest freedom

00:59to analyse the situation in different parts of the world

01:03and to try to lead people and governments to peace.

01:07I think he had great freedom speaking to power.

01:10And I also think in the Church, he had a tremendous understanding

01:14and belief and confidence in the Holy Spirit

01:16and that the Holy Spirit would lead us

01:18and that we had to be open to the ways of the Spirit at all times.

01:22Yes, tonight we'll gather and pray the Rosary in a benediction,

01:32praying for the repose of his soul

01:34and then in due course, after the funeral arrangements are announced in Rome,

01:39there will be a diocesan mass here as well for the Pope.

01:47And can you tell me, how's the news of Pope Francis Passant at either end?

01:51A very big shock because we were watching him in St Peter's Square yesterday

01:56giving the, you know, the blessing and blessing all the children and that.

02:01It was such a big shock.

02:02And what were some of your thoughts about Pope Francis General as 10 years ago?

02:07I thought he was very humble.

02:09Very humble priest.

02:11Very good, you know, when he was a priest.

02:13And very humble as a Pope, you know, and very good to poor.

02:19That was my thought.

02:21There was no pomp and glory about him.

02:24You know, he was just like an ordinary man.

02:27And that's the way I think he wanted people to perceive him.

02:39And that how's the news of Pope Francis Passant at the end of it?

02:42Very sad.

02:44Somebody who was a leader for all communities at all levels.

02:48Very humble man.

02:50I think we all could relate to his humility and how he did things so simple.

02:55And what were your thoughts on Pope Francis Pass?

03:01I thought he was somebody who anybody could have been him.

03:08I thought he was a very kind of holy, happy man.

03:11Happy to send a message and spread the message and show people what it's like to be a leader.

03:18To have the compassion for forgiveness for us, as to what he did.

03:27Everybody knows me in derry, I think.

03:29And where are you from around derry?

03:31I'm not.

03:32Are you a Dubliner?

03:32I'm a Dubliner.

03:33Oh, you're a Dubliner?

03:34Yeah.

03:34But a shame to it.

03:36Do you live in derry?

03:37Oh yeah, 20 odd years.

03:39Where do you live in derry?

03:40Up the mountain.

03:42Yeah, I don't like city life.

03:44I never did.

03:45How has the news of Pope Francis Pass?

03:48Shock.

03:49I was in the chapel.

03:51I put my phone on, charge, and I thought, oh, I'll just see what the news is like as such,

03:57or see what's going on.

03:59And an advert come on, and I switched that, and I saw a photo of the Pope, and I thought,

04:03I'll see how he's getting on.

04:04And it was him giving the blessing on the balcony, and I thought, oh, that's wonderful.

04:10And he looked quite well.

04:12Then he come down in the Popmerville, and started blessing babies and passing them rosary beads

04:21and everything.

04:22And I was full of joy, and I come back, I come down to Mass then, about 10 minutes later,

04:27and blow me, I walk into the chapel, and really joy, and even Father Paul must, I thought

04:33I was weird.

04:35But he said, have you heard the news?

04:38And I said, about the Pope?

04:40And I said, no.

04:41And he said, he's passed away, Anna.

04:43And then walked off, because he'd just left his prayer.

04:46He'd been in praying.

04:47And I was shocked, really, really shocked, because, I mean, of all the times he could

04:54have died, he didn't.

04:55But then none of us know the hour or the minute we're going to go, so we just thank God for

05:01every chance we get.

05:02And there were some of you after the Pope, who was a strange name, Pope?

05:06He was a very powerful Pope in what he believed.

05:11And if that's their order, how they believe.

05:14But the one thing I would say to him, he was very, very much in tune for mercy, and truth,

05:21and understanding.

05:23And that, and then to make this year the year of hope, he got his wish, because he hoped that

05:30he would go.

05:31But we didn't get his wish.

05:34Well, we didn't want that wish, really.

05:37But he's in heaven now, and we just pray for the peace of his soul now, and that he'd be

05:43praying for us all.

05:49I'm from the parish.

05:53And can you tell me, how is the news of Pope Francis' passing on Tuesday?

05:58It's very tragic, very sad.

06:00But it was obvious to see yesterday, with Irby at Irby.

06:05He was very ill.

06:06And what was your thoughts on Pope Francis Truman's time as Pope?

06:15He highlighted the poor.

06:21He always stood with the poor.

06:22Does that mean a lot to you?

06:24No.

06:25It wasn't tied up with the bureaucracy, or the sort of, you know, the trappings of office.

06:35That was the poor.

06:37Introduce yourself, please.

06:38Oh, yeah.

06:42And, John, can you tell me, how is the news of Pope Francis' passing on Tuesday?

06:47Well, we can't expect it.

06:48We knew his health was quite poor, but it was totally amazing to see him out yesterday,

06:52and the big thing, I thought that was amazing, that he was there to celebrate his Easter,

06:57his last Easter, just the day before he died.

06:58It was a totally amazing thing, like a saintly thing.

07:03And what did you think of Pope Francis during his time as a Pope?

07:06No, very good.

07:06A very modern Pope, you know, and he'd done lots of wee things.

07:09He was trying to make wee changes, you know, to modernise the faith a wee bit,

07:12I mean, help people to make it sort of more interesting and more acceptable.
