00:00
So this week as promised we're going to be planting some onions in Giardic and I'll just
00:23
show you some of the, so I've had planned to do this outdoors but the weather's been
00:28
horrible out there so just take it in because I'm going to do some in big pots this is a good
00:33
depth this pot here and I'll put some in the ground as well but just not today.
00:43
So I'll just show you this is some of the garlic and the onion sets that we're going to be planting
00:50
out and these little things will all they'll not mature until next summer
01:00
or early maybe late spring early summer and this is just some of the
01:07
pumpkin type squashes that I grew and I thought they were quite cool for Halloween so I might just
01:15
try and cure them on this one or cook them or something for our Halloween but pretty cool
01:21
first time growing squash this year and and this pot this is composted I grew tomatoes in and I've just
01:29
refreshed it with a bit of new stuff as well because a lot of nutrients will be
01:34
used up in it and then I'll put a handful of fertilizer in there too
01:38
not too much and then we'll get started now I've just mixed on some fertilizer here now and what
01:46
we're going to do now is just talk a wee bit about the humble garlic bulb now this is a soft neck
01:52
there's two types of garlic you would get for planting out a soft neck and a hard neck
01:57
a hard neck the stems will stay on up right these will be up up right down there that can fall over and
02:03
stuff and some people say that's when they're ready for use now anything I learned about doing this
02:09
I learned from a course that I did there a few weeks back with Spragus Sport and it was a free course
02:16
just down at the garden center there and it was all about planting onion and garlics and that's where
02:20
I actually bought these as well in the garden center and one of the things is if you were to take a
02:26
one of the things they told us if you to take a garlic bulb you bought in the supermarket they're
02:32
actually not going to be as productive or productive at all because they are radiated
02:39
to stop them respouting and so you really if you're going to grow garlic you're far better off
02:46
going to your garden center and getting actual garlic that's there that's not been treated with anything
02:52
and that's designed to be planting out
02:54
so each of these cloves will become a garlic bulb in its own right but the process takes about eight
03:13
nine months maybe so not until these won't be ready until next summer basically so but it's important to
03:20
get them in the ground now to give them sufficient time to get established and then get the roots in the ground
03:31
you know there's obviously there's probably around 20 cloves on here so every clove and i've got
03:36
three bulbs will become a bulb of garlic so you're going to have quite a lot of garlic and for a small
03:44
investment same with the onions too you know they're not they're relatively inexpensive this is a
03:53
this is the full bag of onions i got in the month there's a 60 in it and they are
04:00
all different varieties for looks it for growing out or else they're just different shapes and sizes but
04:13
so you're going to have it is cost effective because i know garlic and
04:18
onions aren't the most expensive vegetables but you're growing your own and they're going to be fresh
04:24
and see this peppery stuff too you just leave that on so and it just helps to protect it so we'll just
04:31
go over now and plant one before we do just spacing wise for garlic um there's actually more of the
04:39
millions even though they're smaller so maybe every 15 centimeters so like a small roller you would have had
04:47
no that's probably not 15 centimeters but and then maybe do
05:00
two rows of garlic and one of onions in here that's as much as you would get in here
05:09
so then we'll just mark out for the onions now too
05:17
they can be around 10 centimeters apart they're not don't need as much space as the garlic
05:31
um so we're just going to plop these in here now so
05:36
just take your clove make sure it's the right way up so obviously the one with the
05:47
wee bit of root at the bottom here
05:53
will go downways and you just want to make sure it's maybe
06:01
just about there now and then you can protect these as well in case the birds think they're
06:11
worms when they start coming up so one
06:19
two
06:19
and again just with the onions here you can see here most of them on here at the back
06:32
the garlic's all set as well now they're not buried very deep
06:40
and just so the roots at the bottom and just push them down
06:44
basically there just firm them on and then all i'm going to do with all of these is just cover them lightly
07:02
so either at surface level or just below and the garlic a slightly deeper
07:09
but only you're talking millimeters so that's that is the whole thing done
07:22
and obviously you can use whatever you like for
07:27
growing the garlic it smells really strong already and i'm just gonna
07:30
put the remaining
07:37
kind of like plant material just over the top that'll just decompose quite quickly
07:43
help to feed the sword as well and then all that's left to do is just water them on
07:49
and as i say the other two garlic cloves here will
07:53
go into the garden itself you can use a raised bed anything at all
08:03
one of the things i have here as well that i only put some of the onions on
08:07
it is
08:09
this
08:11
which you can pick up in the point shops and all they're just like a cloth
08:15
growing bag and they're very useful um i have grown
08:20
vegetables in this twice last year so and it's still grand you just keep it dry
08:27
after you use it but it's permeable you can get the water can get through
08:31
and so
08:33
and there's all sorts that will go on there
08:37
and now all the remains to be done with this one is just water it and leave it
08:44
to fame for itself over the winter and that's everything till next week and next week what
08:57
we're going to do is look at some the last seed sowing of the year for me which is sweet pea you
09:04
can see a few here there's a few more outside that have sprouted already as well so and we're
09:10
going to look at the difference between perennial peas or everlasting pea flower like which is
09:18
another variety that's similar to sweet pea has the same nice flowers but it comes back every year
09:26
but it is also can be a bit of a thug in the garden but look at that i've been sowing that as well
09:31
and that's been growing fine so we'll have a look at both of them
09:35
um but for now i'll just leave you with a pumpkin squash and say happy halloween
