00:0040 water. What's up, bro? What's up, baby boy? What's up, Mr. Joey?
00:05What's up, fam? Ain't think good, brother. Ain't think good, man.
00:08I'm like, you understand, like, this is like big for me.
00:12Like, you are a legend, a pioneer in the game, and it's just a pleasure for you to take the time out
00:16and just, you know, have your combo, man, for real. Thank you.
00:20Thank you. I appreciate it. Thank you for, you know, me having me on this thing, man.
00:24You know what I'm saying? IG Live with your boy Joey, man. You hear me?
00:27For sure. You know, man, from Bay to Tampa Bay.
00:30So, man, salute to you, man, the new project's out, Curb Commentator, Episode 1, EP.
00:36I've lost count of how many projects you have, bro.
00:40I know it's like 20-something, like 26 albums, and we're not even including, like, all the other stuff,
00:45compilations, like collabs. Where is this one? What number is this one?
00:50Yeah, you count 26 full-fledged albums, but I got hella EPs.
00:55I started off my career with EPs, like, four and five songs. That's amazing, isn't it?
01:00So, during these years, I've done triple albums. I've done double albums. I did two triple albums.
01:07I did, like, probably, what is it, Revolutry, but Day Shift, Night Shift, Overtime Shift, Overtime Shift.
01:16Damn, Late Night Shift.
01:17Bro, you even have trouble counting, bro. It's nuts, man.
01:20Yeah, I lost count, bro, in so many projects. You know, I have a passion for music. I have a passion for rap.
01:28When I first heard the Sugar Hill Gang back in 1979, the first rap song that ever hit the radio, ever,
01:38I just so happened to be that guy that was in motherfucking junior high. You feel me?
01:43And I heard that shit, and I was like, man, bro, I like this shit. This is R&B, because they was rapping.
01:52Because you've got to remember, Sugar Hill Gang, when they first came in, they was rapping over Chic, over Good Times, right?
02:01Good Times, yeah. You know what I'm talking about?
02:04Well, that's where Sugar Hill Gang Rapper's Delight come from. They rapped over that.
02:09So really, it's just like, you could put a whole bunch of words with rap music in one verse, as opposed to singing it.
02:15When you're singing it, you kind of can only get a few songs, a few things out, a few bars out.
02:21But when you're rapping, you get hella bars out. You feel me?
02:25That's nice.
02:25Yeah. So I became a fan of rap music, and I didn't stop. I just started rapping.
02:31And then in 88, I used to always ask my Uncle St. Charles, which is responsible for quarterbacking,
02:37and not exactly being the executive producer at all, just the mind, the mastermind behind independent music,
02:47such as myself and Master P, and it goes on and on forever. You feel me?
02:52Right. And we was the bricklayers of the foundation, because P used to be out here with us,
02:57and P took it to a bigger level, and I love P. That's my guy. You feel me?
03:03And I love it, man, and I'm just glad to be part of history with him. You know what I'm saying?
03:08So anyway, all I wanted to do was make a motherfucking record, man.
03:12I used to tell my Uncle St. Charles, man, I want to make a record, because he made records in the 70s.
03:16He had a couple of 45s, so he had more experience.
03:20You know what I'm saying? He was just beyond just music. He was a musician.
03:25He was an artist, like paintings. He was on a show back in the days in the Bay Area called Creature Feature.
03:34You know, and they showed nothing but horror flicks at the late night, and they just scare all the kids.
03:39He wasn't a part of that, but we've seen him get on Channel 2 on Creature Feature with his sculptures,
03:45because he'd do plate sculptures and everything. You know what I'm saying?
03:49We was like, Uncle St. Charles, because, you know, that's my mama's brother, so we happy.
03:52He on TV and shit. You know what I'm saying?
03:55So ever since we've seen that, man, ever since that, man, it just gave me the, you know,
04:00I always wanted to be like my uncle. You know what I mean?
04:02And he helped me out. It just so happened it was a perfect combination of me being in band from the fourth grade
04:09all the way to twelfth grade, loving music, having a passion, and we was like, okay, let's have at this.
04:14Let's do music. And it got us to where we're at right now, and it's a beautiful thing.
04:20It is, man. No sign of slowing down. Still very active. And like you said a long time ago in the interview,
04:29this way that you're a veteran, but you're current. You know what I mean?
04:35Yeah.
04:36And it shows. Yeah, I peeped that, man. That was a throwback. I remember watching those old interviews
04:42and, you know, you on like MTV when they did the whole My Block Bay Area thing,
04:47and I just really, that's when I really started like appreciating the Bay Area sound
04:52and the Bay Area music and recognize just how much of a huge like a legend you are,
04:58just not in that area, but also like within hip-hop, period.
05:02Yeah. Thank you, man. You know, game recognized game, man. For real, for real.
05:06Trust that. Thank you.
05:08No doubt. And I just saw like, you know, like you said, still very current.
05:11You collabed with Chris Brown recently with Too Short for him and Thug's new project.
05:17Man, how does it feel to like to see these like, you know, the more, the younger guys
05:21really embracing, you know, the guys that really laid foundation for years, like you and Short.
05:27I feel like everybody checks in for you and Short where, you know, no disrespect to any of the new guys
05:31that are popping out the Bay, but everybody seems to just, you know, all the younger guys just lean towards you
05:36because you even collabed with Rod Wade. Who's from out here in my area?
05:40That's right.
05:40Shout out to Rod Wade. Young man, so tremendously talented. Tremendously talented.
05:45And, you know, working with the younger generation, I've always just tried to show my love for, you know,
05:55true talent. And I treat people like I want to be treated. You know what I mean?
06:00And when I see good talent, I want to rock with good talent. And especially if they rocking with me.
06:06If they rock with me, I'm rocking with you. You know what I'm saying?
06:09And, you know, and I always say to myself, and this don't have nothing to do with their careers,
06:15but I know I always look at like a baseball team.
06:19They always got an OG as the coach. You feel me?
06:22Whether that coach is only 10 years older than them, they're OG. They're older.
06:28And I feel like youngsters need OGs and OGs need youngsters. You know what I'm saying?
06:33A lot of OGs, if you respect it, you can fix a lot of things.
06:37And a lot of youngsters pay attention to you.
06:41Now, I'm saying they're all of them, but they'll pay attention.
06:43What I mean by pay attention is like listen to you.
06:45Like, oh, I got OGs that they came in in certain situations and fixed certain problems for me.
06:52You know what I mean?
06:52Something that was a misunderstanding.
06:53Like, no, y'all got to fix this. Let's woo-woo.
06:56And that certain OG going to be like, okay, bam, let's, you know what I mean?
07:00Okay, let's put it together like the weather. You feel me?
07:03But, no, so I love working with the youngsters, those who are respectful and recognize game.
07:11And I feel like they got great futures.
07:13And I think all these youngsters that I've been rocking with, they got great futures.
07:16And they understand the game.
07:18And they've been laced and sat down.
07:20And, you know what I'm saying?
07:21Casting woke their game up, you know, as far as just, you know, lacing with, you know, a lot of experience.
07:27And, you know what I'm saying?
07:29Stuff like that, you know.
07:31But, you know, and like with CB, working with Chris Brown, I've been doing music with Chris Brown for a long time.
07:37And I got nothing but big love for him.
07:40He is truly, like, he's a Michael Jackson, bro.
07:45Like, this man is a triple threat, man.
07:48You know what I'm saying?
07:49Like, you know what I'm saying?
07:51First of all, CB can rap better than rappers.
07:54Bro, exactly.
07:55That's facts.
07:56You know what I'm saying?
07:57He can rap better than rappers.
07:58He can dance better than anybody.
08:01You know what I'm saying?
08:02He can sting his ass off.
08:03And he's a true songwriter.
08:05And the way he carries himself, he's marketable.
08:09You know what I'm saying?
08:10He got all the badges he wants.
08:11You know what I'm saying?
08:12When I say bass, I mean bitches.
08:14You know what I'm saying?
08:16He's marketable.
08:17And he's a solid dude.
08:18He ain't no sucker.
08:19You know, but he just do his thing, man.
08:21I salute him, man.
08:22You know what I'm saying?
08:24Young thugs, salute the young thug, man.
08:26You know what I mean?
08:28Them dudes, man, they're truly talented.
08:30And it's a blessing to, you know, be on the same project as them.
08:35And Too Short, you know, that's my big OG.
08:37You know what I'm saying?
08:38That's my big bro.
08:39I love him to death.
08:40You know what I'm saying?
08:41That's the godfather.
08:42I might be the ambassador of the Bay.
08:43That's the godfather of the Bay.
08:45That's a great way to put it, man.
08:47Because you two men together definitely need statues outside the Chase Center
08:51or something like that.
08:52You know what I mean?
08:53Like, you're in the area.
08:54Yeah, but let me just say, like, with all these, like, verses going on
08:58and you see a lot of these legendary people going up against each other,
09:01did you ever think about you and Short kind of going back-to-back song for song?
09:05Y'all got a hell of a catalog to do it.
09:08Yeah, we talked about it.
09:09Short was like, man, I mean, we could do it all because that's really my bro.
09:14Like, I love him.
09:15If we was to do it, we wouldn't call it a competition.
09:19We wouldn't call it a battle.
09:20So we'd just say, you know, in the trunk, super slap session.
09:25This would be off the top of my head.
09:29In the trunk, super slap session.
09:32You know what I mean?
09:33That actually sounds hard as shit.
09:34That's how hard, right?
09:36You know what I'm saying?
09:38Because that's what we got.
09:39That's how we get out.
09:40You know, we love bass lines.
09:42We love up-tempo shit.
09:43We just, you know, and we cut from the same material, man.
09:47You know what I mean?
09:48That yay area up top cloth, man.
09:50You know?
09:51Yay.
09:52Yeet.
09:53Hello.
09:53Yeet.
09:54Yeet.
09:54So I want to talk about, too, I mean, I know you're a big sports guy.
09:58Unfortunately, the Niners didn't come out on top this year.
10:01But how do you feel going forward with this Niners team that you got now?
10:05Also, the Warriors, give me your take on that and what's next for y'all.
10:09So I know everybody wants basketball to come back in order, but I know as a Warriors fan,
10:14it's like, you know, it is what it is.
10:18I mean, you guys are looking forward to the draft right now, but the dynasty's over for
10:21either Niners or Warriors.
10:23No, no.
10:24So the Niners, you may say that we didn't come out on top, but we made it to the Super Bowl.
10:28So that's coming out on top.
10:30Okay.
10:30We didn't bring the trophy home.
10:32We didn't bring the W.
10:34You know what I'm saying?
10:35Okay.
10:35The Warriors, we just rebuilding.
10:37You know, unfortunately, we would have had the last championship, you know,
10:43and, you know, what else could be, you know, or if.
10:48If it was a fifth, we'll all be drunk.
10:49You know what I'm saying?
10:50But I'm just saying we had some unfortunate injuries.
10:54I mean, it was devastating to our whole team.
10:56It all came all at once.
10:59You know, sometimes things can be too, you know, some things, what they say,
11:03what's it say?
11:04It's too good to be true.
11:05You know, we went five years in a row.
11:09That's unheard of.
11:10Come on.
11:11It's unheard of, bro.
11:13You know what I'm saying?
11:14But we'll be right back, you know.
11:17And, you know, then this, we didn't see this COVID-19 just slap us across the face
11:23like we some little batches, like out of Bayware.
11:26You know what I'm saying?
11:27That shit just came out of Bayware.
11:28Like, I was just tripping because I was just at the Super Bowl, February 2nd, I believe.
11:33Right.
11:34You know, they're playing motherfucking Bang Bang Niner Gang.
11:37And on the Jumbotron, on the Jumbotron, the whole Visnidio, during the Super Bowl,
11:45put the motherfucking, put me and wifey on the Jumbotron sitting in our luxurious seats.
11:53You know what I'm saying?
11:53Man, at the same time, like, man, I'm out here living it up.
11:57The next thing you know, February 2nd, the next thing you know, we, man, we in the house.
12:04We can't even come out the house.
12:05Can't do nothing.
12:08Can't do nothing.
12:09But, Drake, what's the wine?
12:11The Earl Stevens wine?
12:12What you got there?
12:13Earl Stevens wine, Equinenta Tequila, E40 Sluricay, so many things coming.
12:21You know, right now, it's wine time, right?
12:22You know, every hour is happy hour with me.
12:25You understand me.
12:26Respect that, man.
12:27And when did I get, like, I got to respect your hustle, man.
12:30Just using, like, hip-hop and your love for that to kind of be a platform to branch out
12:34and do things like that, man.
12:35You got all these endeavors that you're involved in.
12:39Man, like, please tell me about how did it come about.
12:41What did you learn to, like, kind of switch up the seas and jump on that kind of wave?
12:46Basically, first of all, I'm going to tell everybody a shout-out to y'all for tuning in
12:51because without y'all, you know, these things wouldn't be successful.
12:56You know, we need ears, man.
12:57You feel me?
12:57We need y'all to see.
12:59You know what I'm saying?
12:59I need y'all to hear what we got to say, man.
13:01You know, with my side hustles and my, you know, how would you say it?
13:10But I just know that it came natural like an afro, you know what I'm saying?
13:16I've always been a hustler, and I've always had, like, you know, back in the day,
13:20I haven't had restaurants.
13:23I'm talking about Fat Burgers.
13:25Right.
13:25I remember that.
13:26Wing stops, you know what I'm saying?
13:28But it was during the wrong time, you know, during the time when the recession kicked in.
13:33I've had clubs.
13:35I had one of the hottest clubs in the Bay.
13:37It was called the Ambassador Lounge.
13:38I was, I mean, celebrities, every Friday we have a celebrity, every Friday, Saturday,
13:44popping.
13:46San Jose, California, popping.
13:48Wow.
13:49You know.
13:49And, you know, the girls was classy.
13:52You know what I'm saying?
13:52The whole woo-woo-woo.
13:53The fellas came to dress them pressed.
13:55You know what I'm saying?
13:56It was real bossy.
13:57You know what I'm saying?
13:58But to make a long story short and a short story long, man, you know,
14:01the OGs always taught me to, you know, try to have a security blanket and a safety net for the future.
14:06So, I've always paid attention to them.
14:09You know what I'm saying?
14:10And, you know, being in this game, you know, I'm just so happy to, I'm not going to say it's luck.
14:19I'm going to say it's just hard working, keeping my feet on the Adam's apple.
14:23Because if you let up, it's not cool.
14:25Being unique is very important.
14:27A lot of artists want to play it safe and stay in one lane because they're scared to get out of that lane,
14:33they're going to fall off.
14:35Me, I've took plenty of chances.
14:37I'm everywhere like air, all over the place, like space.
14:39You don't know what kind of approach I'm going to come when I get a beat.
14:43I might take a beat that no one else likes and I just turn it into something though.
14:48Or that beat will make me just go a whole other direction and say some slick-ass shit.
14:53As long as you spend some slick shit in there and it's a method to your madness, you know what I'm saying?
14:58You're going to be.
