Newsclip about Mike Tyson's criminal case
Transcript
00:00Michael Moore extends his record to 25 wins, 25 knockouts, another event in what has already been an eventful weekend in the heavyweight division.
00:07Let's turn our attention briefly right now to what may turn out to be the biggest story of this weekend in boxing.
00:13That, the potential charge of rape against Mike Tyson in Indianapolis.
00:18The allegations arise from Tyson's visit to Indianapolis last week for an event called Black Expo,
00:23an event which, as you can see, attracted a variety of black leaders from across the country.
00:27One of the events which took place under the umbrella of Black Expo, a Miss Black USA pageant.
00:34And you will see here that the hotel in which the contestants for that pageant stayed
00:39was but a short walk, about a block and a half, from the hotel in which Mike Tyson was ensconced for the weekend.
00:46Police have been told that one of the contestants in the pageant at the invitation of Tyson
00:50made her way from her hotel to Tyson's hotel where she was forced to have sexual intercourse with the former heavyweight champ.
00:57Hear the statements of police.
01:00There has been a rape incident report made,
01:04and it's my understanding that Mr. Mike Tyson has been alleged to have committed the crime.
01:11We're not commenting on the case because we're afraid it's going to compromise the investigation,
01:15or it might put the victim or the witnesses or people that are important in the investigation,
01:20that might cause them, put them in a position where they're going to be harassed.
01:24And that's why we've been very careful in what we've released so far.
01:28To our knowledge, there has been no response yet from the Tyson camp,
01:31although we are told that the former heavyweight champion is indeed aware of the allegations against him.
01:37For more on the story, we're going to take you right now live to Indianapolis to reporter Mike Hsu
01:42of television station WTHR-TV,
01:45who has been following the situation from the beginning of the developing story a couple of days ago.
01:50Mike, bring us up to date on whatever might be new in this in the last 24 hours.
01:55Well, Jim, there are a couple of things that are new,
01:57and one of the, you just recently said there's been no response from Tyson camp.
02:00That's true, there has been no direct response from Mike Tyson,
02:03but there is something which we here in Indianapolis just learned of.
02:06Don King says that he really doesn't have any comment.
02:09Nobody's talking to me about it.
02:10We have to deal with it in the American way and the constitutional due process way.
02:14And that is what is going to happen here.
02:16The prosecutor in this case has held off in releasing any information for about a week in this,
02:22and speculation is here so that he can get more facts without the giant media storm that will be following this.
02:30And that is what has happened here.
02:31It all came out yesterday when our station broke the news,
02:35and everybody is scurrying to find out all the different whereabouts about Mike Tyson over the weekend.
02:41Now, there have been some contestants.
02:43There was a woman in the Miss Black America pageant who just today from Miami said
02:49that the alleged rape could not have occurred at the time that it was reported in this police report,
02:55and the reason being that she was with Tyson at a Johnny Gilley concert until 1.30 in the morning,
03:02and the alleged rape is supposed to have occurred at 1.30 in the morning in the hotel room that Mike Tyson was staying.
03:08One of the interesting things about this is that Mike Tyson was supposed to stay in Indianapolis on Friday,
03:13and the organizer of the Black Expo, the largest black exposition in the country,
03:19got an abrupt phone call about 4 in the morning from one of Tyson's bodyguards
03:23saying that Mike's pulling out, we're leaving out of here,
03:25and he indeed left Indianapolis at 5.45 Friday morning rather abruptly.
03:30Mike, we know that the woman who has alleged this attack was examined at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
03:36Do you know if the police believe they have the medical evidence necessary to support a charge of rape?
03:40I'm sorry, Jim, I do not know that, and one of the reasons for that is the police have been very tight-lipped about this whole thing.
03:47The identity of the woman, it is our station policy not to release that at all,
03:51and I know that her identity is being kept very closely guarded on this.
03:56All right, Mike Shue of television station WTHR in Indianapolis,
03:59thanks very much for your time and for bringing us up to date on the Mike Tyson situation there.
04:04Standing with me now are the two men who stand to be most affected
04:08by whatever happens to Mike Tyson in Indianapolis.
04:11On my left, unanimous world heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield.
04:16On my right, heavyweight contender George Foreman,
04:19both of whom have expected somewhere along the way to perhaps wind up in the ring with Tyson,
04:24most specifically Evander, who has a contract to fight Mike November 8.
04:28Are you fearful that the potential for a rape charge in Indianapolis
04:32could throw that fight of yours off schedule or perhaps even cancel it?
04:36Well, maybe it would, but I hope that in that situation it's not what they're putting on Mike Tyson.
04:44I hope that it's not what everybody thinks it is.
04:49So what you're hoping is that in Mike's best interest and in your own best interest
04:53that the allegations prove groundless?
04:55Well, I'm looking in the best of Mike's interest.
04:56So I feel that we can always fight one day.
04:59And I think that, you know, the man worked hard all his life to make something of himself.
05:04I hate for a situation like that to happen to anybody.
05:07All right.
05:07Because of your scheduled fight with Mike Tyson on November 8,
05:11my friend George Foreman over here has filed a $100 million lawsuit
05:15against Evander Holyfield and his managers charging breach of contract.
05:19George, there have been reports in the last couple days
05:21of a possible settlement between you and the Holyfield people.
05:25Has there been a settlement?
05:26Will there be one?
05:27I can tell you this.
05:28I've told my daughters that Evander Holyfield is now bachelor
05:31and I want him to be my son-in-law.
05:34He's rich, you know.
05:36Do you want him to give you a whole lot of money to drop your lawsuit?
05:39No.
05:39The whole thing is we're going to have a lot of fun.
05:41I still love Evander Holyfield.
05:42We're great friends.
05:43We're hoping that he and Mike Tyson come out for the heavyweight championship of the world
05:46and I'm next in line.
05:47And the whole thing is going to be a lot of fun in the end.
05:49It sounds like a lot of rhetoric, George,
05:51when you are holding a $100 million club over his head.
05:54Aren't you expecting some payment from Evander?
05:57All I expect from Evander Holyfield is for him to stop trying to break my will in the ring
06:01or try to break my will and stop trying to break my jaw.
06:04Well, I'm not entirely sure all of that is true
06:05because, Evander, my information is that his side is still looking for some recompense from you
06:10and that's why the $100 million lawsuit still exists.
06:13Are you fearful that George's lawsuit might prevent you from meeting Mike as scheduled on November 8th?
06:18Not at all. I think that's left up to my attorney.
06:21My attorney is handling that matter.
06:23With me, I'm still training and looking forward to finding Mike Tyson.
06:26He says he still loves you.
06:28Do you take him at face value on that one even though he's suing you for $100 million?
06:31Sure. I don't think it's more of me.
06:33I think it's more of whatever the situation is and my attorney is handling the matter.
06:39What did you think of Michael Moore tonight?
06:41I think he was very impressive.
06:43I think he went out there and proved that being a small guy, he had to punch
06:46and he showed a lot of character and a lot of will, a lot of determination.
06:50If he had a real heavyweight's punch, might he have finished Alex Stewart in the first round
06:55when he had him so seriously hurt?
06:57Well, I think in the first round, the fight could have been stopped then.
07:00I think Alex Stewart was hurt and the referee gave him that extra second and the bell rung.
07:06I'm sure if the referee wouldn't have stopped it, if the bell wouldn't have ringing,
07:11Michael Moore would have checked in the first round.
07:13Stewart showed the same kind of courage and resiliency he showed against you, right?
07:17Well, he showed that he can come back after being hurt and he came back that second round
07:23and hurt Michael Moore, which showed the determination that he had.
07:27But as you see the fight, Michael Moore showed that he had a lot of boxing skills
07:31and a lot of determination and he was able to catch him with that good uppercut.
07:35All right. Let's settle one more.
