La petite ville de Cherokee est en émoi lorsque le corps mutilé de Frankie Peterson, un garçon, est retrouvé. Les premiers éléments de l'enquête incriminent Terry Maitland, un enseignant promptement arrêté bien qu'il clame son innocence. Cependant, d'autres preuves indiscutables attestent que le principal suspect était ailleurs au moment du crime. Ces contradictions déroutent Ralph Anderson et ses collègues. Holly Gibney, une détective aux méthodes peu communes, se penche sur l'affaire. Le mystère du roman de Stephen King est bien retranscrit dans cette mini-série portée par un talentueux casting.
