Hayfever: How to take care of fever at home, particularly if you have a lung condition

00:07and avoid going out on days when it's really high pollen you can avoid drying clothes outside

00:14pollen can get trapped in those fibers that's a really helpful thing to avoid cutting grass or

00:19walking on cut grass is another thing to avoid and keeping fresh flowers at home but the main

00:25thing really to keep you safe is to take your medication and to keep that those hay fever

00:33symptoms under control by taking your antihistamine or a steroid nasal spray so why is it that hay fever

00:39targets the lungs in particular so yeah if you if you're living with a lung condition your um your

00:44airways are already kind of narrowed they might be inflamed pollen can irritate that further so your

00:49muscles will tighten around your um your airways the um that can lead to more irritation that your

00:57body starts to produce a mucus or a phlegm which then leads to kind of coughing breathlessness

01:02wheezing tightness across your chest um which can then lead to an asthma attack or a flare-up um so

01:11it's really vitally important that people take their medications as prescribed and they take their

01:15reliever inhaler with them if they have one and that they can take antihistamine or a steroid nasal spray

01:22to protect them from the hay fever symptoms themselves we know that hay fever symptoms are

01:27really miserable but if you have a lung condition hay fever can lead to an asthma attack or a flare-up

01:33which can be really serious um sometimes even life-threatening so it's vitally important that people

01:38manage their condition take their medications as prescribed take the reliever inhaler with you if you have

01:44one and you can take antihistamines or a steroid nasal spray to kind of protect you from the hay

01:50fever symptoms themselves if you know when your hay fever symptoms normally begin you can take start

01:56taking your antihistamines two to four weeks before that period or a nasal spray one to two weeks and

02:02that will give you the best protection and continue to take those throughout the pollen season um you can

02:07also try putting petroleum jelly around your nose and this can kind of trap the pollen before it gets into

02:12your airways it's like pollen grains are very small so they can easily kind of get into your airways get

02:19into your nose um you're breathing it in it's in the atmosphere so once you've kind of breathed those

02:24in that's irritating um your airways
