00:00Tensions between the U.S. and the EU escalate ahead of what Trump calls Liberation Day.

00:05European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has warned that the European Union is prepared to push back

00:10against Donald Trump's plans to impose sweeping reciprocal tariffs on all U.S. trading partners.

00:16Speaking before the European Parliament, von der Leyen emphasized Europe's leverage in negotiations,

00:21citing its vast single market and economic strength.

00:24That we have everything we need to protect our people and our prosperity.

00:30We have the largest single market in the world.

00:33We have the strength to negotiate.

00:36We have the power to push back.

00:38Von der Leyen criticized the proposed tariffs, warning they would raise consumer prices, destroy jobs,

00:43and harm both U.S. companies and global trade.

00:46She described the measures as counterproductive to Trump's goal of reindustrializing America.

00:52The EU is already preparing countermeasures after delaying retaliation against earlier U.S. tariffs

00:57on steel, aluminum, and cars.

00:59Von der Leyen urged unity among EU leaders,

01:02stressing that while Europe did not start this confrontation, it is ready to act decisively.

01:07We think it is wrong.

01:08We do not necessarily want to retaliate, but if it is necessary,

01:13we have a strong plan to retaliate and we will use it.

01:18Last year, the EU recorded a 156 billion euro trade surplus with the U.S.,

01:23but a 108 billion euro deficit in services.
