He's well-known for his political flip-flops and his thorny relationship with Donald Trump. He has said that he supports moving forward with the president's election year Supreme Court nomination.   This is the story of Mitt Romney.

00:03The bullying, the greed, the showing off,

00:08the misogyny, the absurd third grade theatrics.

00:14You know, we've long referred to him as the Donald.

00:18He's the only person in the entire country

00:21to whom we have added an article before his name,

00:23and it wasn't because he had attributes we admired.

00:43Politics is at the grassroot level, and you are doing it.

00:46It's not caviar and filet mignon.

00:54I'm not sure what that is.

01:01We were Mormons, and growing up in Michigan,

01:03that might have seemed unusual or out of place,

01:05but I really don't remember it that way.

01:08My friends cared more about what sports teams we followed

01:10than what church we went to.

01:20I grew up in Detroit and loved with cars

01:22and wanted to be a car guy like my dad,

01:24but by the time I was out of school,

01:26I realized that I had to go out on my own.

01:29That if I stayed around Michigan in the same business,

01:32I'd never really know if I was getting a break

01:34because of my dad.

01:35I wanted to go someplace new and improve myself.

01:59I could tell you why I fell in love with him.

02:20He was tall, laughed a lot.

02:22He was nervous.

02:23Girls like that.

02:24It shows a guy's a little intimidated.

02:27He was nice to my parents,

02:28but he was also really glad when they weren't around.

02:57We both became quite emotional

03:04and expressed our affection for each other

03:09we can deal with whatever this is

03:11as long as it's not fatal.

03:13I read somewhere that Mitt and I have a storybook marriage.

03:16Well, let me tell you something.

03:19In the storybooks I read,

03:21there never were long, long rainy winter afternoons

03:24in a house with five boys screaming at once,

03:28and those storybooks never seemed to have chapters

03:30called MS or breast cancer.

03:33A storybook marriage?

03:35Nope, not at all.

03:37What Mitt Romney and I have is a real marriage.

03:54You always get the harsh questions from your critics

04:21saying that you've flip-flopped on issues.

04:24Is that the worst label for a campaign?

04:28My guess is that everybody who's running for president,

04:30at least among the top tier,

04:32have changed their mind on a number of issues.

04:38This isn't an easy decision.

04:40I hate to lose.

04:53My passion probably flows from the fact that I believe in God,

04:57and I believe we're all children of the same God.

05:00I believe we have a responsibility to care for one another.

05:14Donald Trump is a phony, a fraud.

05:17His promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University.

05:21I backed Mitt Romney.

05:23I backed him.

05:24You can see how loyal he is.

05:25He was begging for my endorsement.

05:28I could have said, Mitt, drop to your knees.

05:30He would have dropped to his knees.

05:32He was begging.

05:45It's not easy winning.

05:47I know that myself.

05:48He did something I tried to do

05:50and was unsuccessful in accomplishing.

05:52He won the general election.

05:54And he continues with a message of improvement,

05:58bringing people together.

06:10I ran for president twice.

06:12I ran for governor once.

06:14I ran for Senate twice.

06:15I've never had any attempt made by a foreign government

06:18to contact me or a member of my staff.

06:20And had that occurred,

06:22I would have contacted the FBI immediately.

06:34I'm aware that there are people in my party

06:36and in my state who will strenuously disapprove

06:40of my decision.

06:41And in some quarters, I will be vehemently denounced.

06:45I'm sure to hear abuse from the president and his supporters.

06:49Does anyone seriously believe

06:53that I would consent to these consequences

06:56other than from an inescapable conviction

06:59that my oath before God demanded of me?

07:20I recognize that we may have a court

07:24which has more of a conservative bent

07:27than it's had over the last few decades.

07:30But my liberal friends have, over many decades,

07:32gotten very used to the idea of having a liberal court.

07:35And that's not written in the stars.
