For the first time since 2011, a black woman has won Miss Universe — and Miss South Africa Zozibini Tunzi has a powerful message about leadership for young girls.

00:00For me to be able to be here today, crowned as a Miss Universe with my hair looking the way that it does

00:05and my skin looking the way that it does is something truly magical

00:10and I hope that it touches every child who grew up the way that I grew up

00:13and was told that, you know, they were not beautiful.

00:16And it even extends beauty because it's not just about beauty,

00:20it's about breaking boundaries and doing things that you've been told you can never do before.

00:53I think the most important thing we should be teaching young girls today is leadership.

00:58It's something that has been lacking in young girls and women for a very long time.

01:03Not because we don't want to, but because of what society has labelled women to be.

01:08I think we are the most powerful beings on the world

01:11and that we should be given every opportunity

01:13and that is what we should be teaching these young girls, to take up space.

01:17Nothing is as important as taking up space in society and cementing yourself.

01:38HeForShe, you know, that's exactly what it means.

01:41HeForShe, he is standing for the women, he is standing with the women

01:46and yes, I'm absolutely excited and I can see that you guys are excited about it too.

01:51And yeah, I think what makes it more special is that it's not just about me,

01:57it's about the nation.

01:58I'm taking your guys' messages to the universe, messages of love.

02:02It's time that we stop fighting,

02:05It's time that we stop pointing fingers and work together

02:07in ending this fight against gender-based violence.

02:10Young women are the future of society,

02:12and we actually need to unite to bring a change to society.

02:17Society should be co-existing with all the communities

02:20and as the regions collectively organize to make that change

02:22I think that's the right path to take.
