ICE Plans to Deport Mother Recovering From Cancer

His mother's cancer is now in remission. But she's also now been in ICE custody for over two months. Now, he's fighting to stop her from being deported.

00:00It's heartbreaking. I don't know what other word, you know, like any son or daughter would feel

00:06if their mother is going through something like this.

00:25She would not be able to receive any significant care there. And so it would

00:29yeah, it's we expect if that does happen to for health to decline and then not be able to receive

00:34any any any sort of adequate care. It very rapidly grew into stage four, which is what

00:42prompted to like a very immediate, I don't know, for emergency surgery, which basically cut across

00:48from the back side of her left neck to the other side. So she still so she lost a lot of tissue

00:53in the skin in general, limiting her mobility. She's lost a few teeth and many of them are

00:58damaged. So she has trouble eating still. I mean, at first it was really bad when she couldn't even

01:02eat anything. We you know, we we made her fruit and vegetable like shakes. And so she's you know,

01:09she's still in recovery. She's still healing. And that's one of the aspects that we're trying to

01:12highlight. And then her health has only gotten worse since the detention center.

01:16She's developed a vitamin B12 deficiency since then, which the doctors there have diagnosed.

01:21And they didn't give her a proper medication until our attorney intervened. Everyone there

01:26has to eat in 10 minutes. So I mean, that's for everybody, right? But especially for her,

01:31because of the mass situation I mentioned. So she receives no type of special accommodation

01:36for her situation. And there's no privacy, of course, but lights are only off for like three

01:40or four hours during the night. And in general, she's not seeing it. She's not getting any

01:44oncological care. She missed her appointment in September because she was detained. So we have

01:49no idea where her cancer is right now because we haven't been able to get her checked.

02:17she only completed sixth grade, but my intellectual drive has been from her. Like

02:21she's always told me like, oh, you know, I really like learning about historia and

02:26otras culturas. She's always said that. And you know, it just so happens that I, you know,

02:30I'm getting a degree in history. So I always say that, you know, I, my interest in history,

02:34history is literally because of her, but also just seeing her hard work and her work ethic

02:37in general, as, as, as an immigrant, make it into a new country with that doesn't want you or like

02:43you, you know, and she's only ever, her only goal has been to make our life better, you know,

02:48because she definitely made her life worse by doing what she did.
