Canada's new prime minister Mark Carney has called a snap election for April 28, saying he needs a strong mandate to deal with U.S. President Donald Trump. Carney, the Liberal Party candidate, will be up against Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre.

00:03The country's new Prime Minister Mark Carney has called a snap election,

00:07saying he needs a strong mandate to deal with U.S. President Donald Trump.

00:12We are facing the most significant crisis of our lifetimes

00:16because of President Trump's unjustified trade actions

00:19and his threats to our sovereignty.

00:22He wants to break us so America can own us.

00:29We will not let that happen.

00:32The announcement comes after Trump slapped tariffs on Canadian goods

00:35and threatened to add more, and he made repeated calls

00:38to make Canada the 51st U.S. state.

00:41Carney, from the Liberal Party, was sworn in less than two weeks ago.

00:45He hopes to capitalize on his party's rise in popularity since January,

00:48after former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stepped down.

00:51Conservative leader Pierre Polliet, the main challenger in this election,

00:55has since wrapped up his campaign as he tries to stop

00:58a fourth straight Liberal government.

01:01Liberals, after the lost Liberal decade,

01:05have made our economy and our country weaker and more divided,

01:11just like Trump wanted.

01:14Electing Liberals to a fourth term will weaken our country still.

01:26The politicians have just five weeks to try and swing the public,

01:29with recent polls putting the two candidates neck and neck.
