00:00There's Oscar Piastri in the distance, going over the kerb and going to the top of the timing charts by a tenth of a second from Lewis Hamilton.
00:08Yeah, well I think when we went on board with Leclerc, he was in the middle of a bit of an adventure down at the hairpin.
00:14This presumably is going to be Jack Doone spinning.
00:18Yeah, picked up the throttle, got a little bit trigger happy with the throttle pedal there.
00:23Too much torque, lights up the rear axle and round she goes.
00:27Is that just a lack of patience there, Martin? He's just gone too early on it?
00:32Yeah, he's just got to feed the throttle in a little bit with these cars.
00:36They've got very long throttle pedals anyway to help the drivers to feed.
00:40Yeah, that's what we joined with and that's why Leclerc is only down in eighth place.
00:47Yeah, he's played second fiddle to his teammates so far this weekend that has shown.
00:51Max has got a clear run and that's going to help him stay in the championship hunt, whatever his car is doing.
00:57Goes fastest of all. Very good final sector for Max Verstappen.
01:011.31.4 for him, the Red Bull fastest in the final sector.
01:09That's one of those, as Carlos Sainz found out last year, you can very quickly keep your foot in and end up on the inside barrier to his left.
01:19Carlos Sainz who crashed and then managed to get going again and carry on in qualifying.
01:25This is where Landon Norris fell off the track, down in 15th now.
01:29And he's been outqualified in the two sessions we've had so far.
01:32One for the Grand Prix in Australia and one for the sprint by the young rookie from Brazil.
01:37Alex Albon crosses the line, goes sixth fastest.
01:40And let's just keep an eye here on Liam Lawson who needs a steady lap, but it wasn't a steady end to the lap.
01:48And only 15th fastest as Leclerc makes his way around the final corner.
01:52It's starting to get a bit critical this for Charles Leclerc who only goes 10th fastest.
01:57What's he got at the end of the lap that should get him...
02:00Oh, he had to grab a handful of opposite lock there as well, didn't he?
02:04Didn't he just? Sixth fastest, lost time in the final sector with that moment at the final turn.
02:10Around the final corner goes Kimi Antonelli, he goes third fastest.
02:14This is Liam Lawson.
02:19Getting all sorts of a swap on there.
02:22Yeah, that's the bit when I was telling you about if the tyres are not where they need to be.
02:26We know that the wind has swapped around. It was coming right to left as we look down the main straight on board with Lewis Hamilton.
02:32It's now coming left to right.
02:34Maybe that rather caught out Lewis Hamilton there and why he lost time on that particular lap.
02:41But the wind certainly seems to have rotated around.
02:43That is Isaac Hadger.
02:45And Hadger has just lost him on the timing screen for a minute.
02:50Gone second fastest behind Lando Norris.
02:53So this track is really improving all the time as Sainz goes eighth fastest.
02:58And we've still got Dewan improving, Lawson improving, Gasly a knock-on,
03:01and now Alex Albon to go sixth fastest overall.
03:05Next across the line will be Pierre Gasly.
03:08Olly Behrmann is hovering around the danger zone.
03:10Make that in the danger zone as Gasly puts himself out of it.
03:14Oh, and Jack Dewan nearly coming a cropper at the final corner.
03:17Lawson is out, Dewan is out.
03:19That cost him that set error at the final turn.
03:21Ocon should go through in 13th place.
03:25And that pushed Gasly out at that point.
03:27Second fastest for Tsunoda.
03:29That racing bulls looks really racy as Piastri now goes a tenth up on George Russell and goes fastest overall.
03:36I don't think he's going to last very much longer at the top of the standings
03:40because here comes Lando Norris.
03:42And Lando Norris puts half a second between himself and Piastri.
03:46Antonelli's been told all is okay, carry on.
03:48Lewis Hamilton knows it all is okay.
03:50He's carried on, but only gone sixth fastest at Lewis Hamilton.
03:54The final sector was not good for Lewis.
03:57Dropped about four tenths compared to the best sector time that we'd had.
04:01So keep an eye on that, see who can improve behind him.
04:04Charles Leclerc is currently in the top ten.
04:06He's tenth, made that sixth fastest, only Ocon on a flying lap.
04:09Pretty handy sector times for him, one and two sectors.
04:12And goes tenth fastest, knocks out Nico HĂĽlkenberg in the Sauber, the man he replaced at Haas this year.
04:19Isaac Hadjia goes fourth fastest.
04:21Antonelli's currently ninth fastest.
04:23I thought Russell was going to give him a massive slipstream down the back straight, but he got out of the way.
04:28Antonelli then stays right, shortest run to the line and doesn't go faster.
04:33Remains ninth fastest.
04:34Carlos Sainz is on a decent lap.
04:37Fernando Alonso has set the personal best in the first sector.
04:40Alonso crosses the line, goes ahead of his teammate, but he is out of qualifying.
04:44Round the final corner comes Carlos Sainz.
04:47Can he knock his teammate Alex Albon out?
04:49No, he can't.
04:50Albon out qualifies him for the second Grand Prix.
04:52It's a really fast corner that nips through the exit.
04:55It all looked lovely, didn't it?
04:57Well, what's his time?
04:58A 1.30.9, a couple of tenths quicker than he managed for his best time in Q2.
05:03Kimi Antonelli disturbs the gravel as he makes his way around the final corner,
05:07and that's cost him in the final sector four tenths to Verstappen.
05:11Piastri has set two purples so far on his lap in terms of sector times.
05:16Hadger goes second fastest on a used set of tyres.
05:19Here comes his teammate Yuki Tsunoda, who was fifth on the grid for the season opener in Australia,
05:24and he's third on the grid at the moment.
05:25And Piastri then, the short run to the line.
05:28Piastri, seven front rows in his Formula One career, no poles.
05:32He's now on provisional pole by two tenths of a second.
05:36And Bruce McLaren, the McLaren founder, had seven front rows without a pole position.
05:41Oscar Piastri's levelling that at the moment, but he's on that provisional pole as Hamilton goes third fastest.
05:46What about Leclerc, though? He is next to cross the line.
05:49Charles Leclerc to the line behind Hamilton by a tenth of a second.
05:54Ferrari sharing the second row.
05:56Lando Norris will be next to cross the line and by nine one hundredths of a second
06:01is beaten to provisional pole by his teammate Oscar Piastri.
06:05That was Russell that he passed.
06:07I don't know if he made a mistake going into turn one.
06:09This is Antonelli kicking up the gravel and he gets his lap time deleted
06:14as a result for exceeding track limits because he's gone over the white line.
06:18Fair cop. Yeah, I think so.
06:20Yeah, so a bit of damage to the floor, I have no doubt, as well.
06:24But Antonelli loses the lap time, spreads gravel on the track.
06:28He needs to go again.
06:30Here comes Max. So I assume it's the other way around.
06:32Hadja interrupting Max, yeah.
06:34Whoever was waving Isaac Hadja out of his garage didn't look right
06:39and should have looked right because Max was coming.
06:43No, that was never going to be the right time to release him.
06:46Hamilton, it's not looking brilliant for him in terms of taking a second pole this weekend
06:51as Verstappen gets onto the kerb, dashes to the line.
06:54Can't improve on third place.
06:56That run without a pole continues.
06:59Isaac Hadja throwing his car into the final corner,
07:02goes seventh fastest for his best start in Formula 1.
07:06He's been noted as well for an unsafe release.
07:09And Lando Norris aborts his lap,
07:11which is going to leave Oscar Piastri with his first pole position in Formula 1.
07:16Unless Ferrari can do something about it.
07:18Here comes Lewis Hamilton, stays on that second row alongside Max Verstappen.
07:24Round the final corner comes Oscar Piastri in his pole for Piastri.
07:29George Russell, currently fifth for Mercedes and improving on his lap.
07:33Leclerc will stay sixth fastest.
07:35Tsunoda has pitted and will start ninth on the grid.
07:39As the times, not all these drivers improving on their second runs.
07:43George Russell, DRS open, heads to the line and heads to the front row.
07:48He split the two McLarens and I said not all the drivers were improving,
07:53but George Russell found some pace and Piastri gets pole from Russell
07:57and the margin, 82 milliseconds.
08:00I think that was the hairpin of my life.
08:03Yeah, that was some good stuff there.
08:05So that is P1.
08:07P1, well done, mate. Pole position. Great job.
08:10Very nicely done.
08:12Thank you. I just had a little scream in my helmet.
08:16I'll not burst your eardrums, but thanks everyone.
08:19It was a bit of a journey to get there, but well done.
08:23Very, very good.
08:25Devilish for Oscar, isn't it?
09:15You
