The people of Dasol in Pangasinan are known for their wealth.
00:04
But instead of color, it's black.
00:06
It's white and it's grown on the ground.
00:09
They earn from this.
00:13
Up to a million.
00:14
What kind of wealth is that?
00:16
200 per kaban.
00:17
That's why they earn up to 80 million pesos a season.
00:21
They produce three kinds of salt.
00:24
Barara, the salt that's grown on the ground.
00:27
Dirty salt.
00:29
Dirty salt is what's grown on the ground.
00:32
And the salt that's taken from the fields and cooked to make pino.
00:37
The salt that we normally use every day.
00:40
When I wake up.
00:41
When I wake up, I actually eat.
00:43
I don't eat.
00:44
I drink electrolytes.
00:45
That's salt.
00:46
I cook eggs.
00:48
That's still salt.
00:51
I work out.
00:52
Salt comes out of my body.
00:54
Sometimes, or most of the time, we take salt for granted.
00:59
That's why when we saw the process of making salt here in Pangasinan.
01:05
Saludo.
01:06
When I look at the salt now, I don't look at the pepper.
01:09
I only look at the salt.
01:11
Then I'll say, salt, you're crazy.
01:16
The salt in Dasol is not just hectares.
01:19
It's also considered as home of the quality salt.
01:22
Because their salt is pollution-free.
01:24
Here in Dasol, we're not the biggest producer of salt.
01:28
But we have the highest chloride content.
01:31
And we're also the content that the Danubasas consider.
01:34
And the quality of this is also far-reaching.
01:37
The salt of Dasol is not just here in Pangasinan that the salt reaches.
01:41
It reaches the whole Philippines.
01:43
From Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
01:45
And not only that.
01:46
The salt of Dasol is also being imported to Japan now.
01:51
To strengthen, all of that is because of the salt.
01:54
Salt.
01:56
Our lunch is not yet here.
01:59
Lunch.
02:00
That's good.
02:01
Hey, Tay.
02:02
You know, I'm so hungry.
02:03
I've been starving for a while.
02:04
The calabao is really tiring to cook.
02:06
Yes.
02:07
Really?
02:08
Yes.
02:09
It's been a week already.
02:10
It's boiling.
02:11
It's okay.
02:12
As long as it has meat in it.
02:13
Thank you, Tay.
02:14
I'm really grateful.
02:16
This is what I mean.
02:17
Cream of lobster.
02:21
With garlic.
02:24
And some onion mix.
02:28
That's what you put in.
02:30
And there's mushroom.
02:31
There's mushroom.
02:42
Tay.
02:43
It doesn't taste good.
02:45
It's okay.
02:46
That's why it doesn't taste good.
02:47
I'm fooling myself.
02:48
It really doesn't taste good.
02:49
It doesn't taste good.
02:50
Wait.
02:51
Wait a minute.
02:52
I'll get something first.
02:54
Where are you going?
03:07
Where did you go?
03:10
This is the only salt.
03:12
I'll get sugar.
03:14
But before the salt reaches our kitchens,
03:16
and while eating,
03:17
sweat and fatigue is what we go through.
03:19
And their livelihood still depends on the sun.
03:22
Literally,
03:23
we remember when it rains.
03:25
The sun is our companion in harvesting salt.
03:28
Because if there's no sun,
03:30
we won't be able to harvest.
03:32
Half of the 18 barangays of Dasol have salt.
03:36
This is the main livelihood of their town.
03:38
And in this livelihood,
03:40
each member of the family has their own job.
03:43
It's a family job.
03:44
It's not just one person.
03:46
From the father,
03:47
the mother,
03:48
to the children.
03:49
Even when they're still young,
03:50
if they're able to do the laundry,
03:52
they put the salt in the food.
03:54
They help each other to make the work easier.
03:56
We all help each other.
03:58
Some help with the food,
03:59
some help with the water,
04:00
some help with the chisels.
04:02
That's what we do every day.
04:04
That's the tradition that we do here.
04:06
So that the children can also benefit from the work.
04:10
So that the salt won't be lost.
04:12
As the family of Mrs. Marcela,
04:14
of the more than 400 families in Dasol
04:16
that live off of salt,
04:17
she's also the oldest salt worker in Dasol.
04:20
I'm 12 years old.
04:22
I've been doing this for 50 years.
04:24
The reason why she still continues
04:26
to work despite her age,
04:28
is so that they don't have to
04:29
add more salt to make food.
04:32
My son and I,
04:33
we also have a job
04:35
in the mobile valley,
04:37
in Mordang.
04:38
Do you have a meeting on your trip?
04:40
Yes.
04:41
All you gotta do,
04:42
is just subscribe to the YouTube channel
