Woman left with no money for weeks after bank registered her dead

Masithokoze Moyo, 45, was left without access to her money and had her passport cancelled after Co-operative Bank mistakenly registered her as deceased.  The error, made when she tried to switch banks, led to her credit cards being declined and creditors being notified of her supposed death.  It took 16 days to restore her accounts, but she missed a holiday and suffered severe distress.  Now, she is demanding £5 million in compensation, while the bank has apologised and pledged to prevent similar mistakes.

00:00My name is Masitogo Zamoyo and I'm from Kidminster.

00:05On the 6th of February, the co-operative bank declared me deceased,

00:09which was an administrative error from their end and it's left me in a right mess.

00:14Most of my creditors were informed by the co-op that I have been deceased,

00:18including my main credit card, which meant that I do not have any source of income

00:22from the 6th of February to the 21st of February.

00:25I've been admitted to hospital three times with panic attacks

00:29and also the creditors that were informed by the co-operative that I've been deceased

00:34include Vanquish Bank for my main credit card,

00:38which is one that was stopped from the 6th of February to the 21st of February.

00:45They've even informed the DVLA that I was deceased, including HMRC.

00:50So there are other creditors, including the water company, the electric company,

00:57my car insurance, so everything has been cancelled.

01:01I'm starting to start from scratch due to an administrative error.

01:05I am not happy at all. I am going for compensation.

01:08If they decline my compensation, I'm going through to the financial ombudsman to sue them.
