China FM Presents Beijing as Reliable Power Amid Geopolitical Turmoil

China’s foreign minister, Wang Yi, says his country will carry on retaliating against U.S. tariffs on its goods and presented China as a stable and reliable global power in contrast to the shifts in U.S. policy under President Donald Trump.

00:00In his first few weeks in power, U.S. President Donald Trump has upended U.S. foreign policy,

00:07mending diplomatic ties with Moscow and stunning American allies with tariffs not just on China

00:14but on them too.

00:17And that was the background to the Chinese foreign minister's comments at a press conference

00:22on the sidelines of a major political gathering in Beijing.

00:27Wang Yi presented China as a reliable global power in a probable appeal to Europe and the

00:33global south.

00:35And he took aim at Washington, which is involved in tit-for-tat tariffs with Beijing.

00:41China should bear international obligations and fulfill its responsibility as a great power.

00:47It should not use force, and it should not be weak.

00:52Wang said China would continue to counter pressure from the U.S., but also said there is space for cooperation.

01:00It's notable that Wang did not mention Donald Trump's name.

01:05And that's because despite its tough talk, Beijing is still hoping to negotiate a way

01:11out of the tariffs and lower tensions with Washington.
