00:00U.S. President Donald Trump says Russia's Putin would accept European peacekeeping troops
00:06as part of a deal to end the war in Ukraine.
00:11The United Nations General Assembly rejects a U.S. resolution that urges an end to the
00:16war in Ukraine that fails to mention Russia's aggression.
00:20Pope Francis remains in critical condition and has shown early signs of kidney insufficiency
00:25as the 88-year-old pontiff battles pneumonia and a complex lung infection.
00:32U.S. President Donald Trump says Russia's President Vladimir Putin would accept European
00:36peacekeeper troops in Ukraine as part of a deal to end the war.
00:41He made the comments as he hosted French President Emmanuel Macron at the White House to discuss
00:45the ongoing conflict.
00:47Speaking at a joint press conference after their closed door meeting, Macron said European
01:11nations are ready and willing to deploy troops to guarantee Ukraine's security.
01:15The French leader noted that Europe must learn and not repeat mistakes of the past.
01:37He revealed that the Kremlin had betrayed their trust in 2014 and violated a negotiated
01:42peace deal as it proceeded to annex the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea.
02:11Trump maintains that Putin is serious about securing a peace deal and bringing the war
02:15to a close.
02:17He added that he believes a deal can be finalized and implemented within weeks.
02:27The United Nations General Assembly refuse to adopt a U.S. resolution that urges an end
02:32to the war in Ukraine.
02:34Washington's proposal failed to make mention of Russia's aggression in its invasion that
02:38violates the U.N. Charter.
02:41Three European proposed amendments were made to the U.S.-backed resolution before it was
02:45voted on, adding language that firmly acknowledges Moscow's aggression.
02:49Today, we mark the three years since the beginning of Russia's illegal and unprovoked full-scale
02:57invasion of Ukraine.
02:59We reiterate our resolute condemnation of this flagrant violation of international law.
03:06The General Assembly has demanded an early end to this war of aggression and a just,
03:13lasting and comprehensive peace in Ukraine, in line with the U.N. Charter.
03:20Russia voted against the resolution, claiming that Europe did not acknowledge the root causes
03:25of the conflict, leading to another anti-Russia piece of paper.
03:28The U.S. also voted against the amendments to their proposal, which passed with 93 votes
03:50in favor, 18 against and 65 abstentions.
03:55Washington also put forward its resolution to the legally binding U.N. body, the Security
04:00Council, which did pass.
04:03This resolution puts us on the path to peace.
04:07It is a first step, but a crucial one, one of which we should all be proud.
04:13Now we must use it to build a peaceful future for Ukraine, Russia and the international
04:21community.
04:24The resolution received 10 votes in favor at the 15-member council.
04:29The five abstentions came from France, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Greece and Slovenia.
04:39Top EU diplomats said Ukraine's accession to the bloc is an integral part of lasting
04:44peace.
04:45They were speaking in Kiev at a summit marking the third anniversary of the Russian invasion.
04:53Ukraine's accession to the EU will be the most important security guarantee for the
05:00future of Ukraine.
05:03EU leaders rallied around Ukraine's President Vladimir Zelensky after widespread dismay
05:08that Donald Trump had dispatched top aides for preliminary talks with Russian officials
05:13without Ukrainian or European representatives.
05:17There are fears in Europe that Trump's apparent pivot to Moscow could freeze Ukraine out of
05:22the peace process entirely and end up with a deal that favors Russia.
05:28European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the bloc was still committed to
05:32admitting Ukraine.
05:34If they continue at that speed and at that quality, perhaps they could be earlier than
05:392030.
05:40So thank you very much for giving the impulse and let's work hard on all sides really to
05:46keep the momentum up.
05:50US politicians also recently ruled out granting NATO membership to Ukraine.
05:55Membership to the alliance has frequently been cited by Russian President Vladimir Putin
06:00as one of the main reasons for launching the war.
06:04We hope that United States will continue support like all the partners.
06:10All the partners do it and we need also not to lose this unity between Europe and United
06:16States.
06:18As fighting rages on the front line, political pressure is mounting for a coordinated European
06:23effort to secure peace.
06:28But I think we in Europe, we need to get our act together.
06:32And in order to get an act together, you have to have a plan to the Americans, because if
06:36you don't have a plan to the Americans, you're not going to get involved in the negotiations.
06:40Could EU accession replace NATO accession as a security guarantee for Ukraine?
06:45According to the leaders who sat in this room, yes it can and yes it should.
06:49Becoming part of the bloc could provide Ukraine with the necessary deterrence against a new
06:53Russian attack in the future, they said.
06:56But there's a catch.
06:57EU accession would always lack a key player in this game of geopolitics, the United States.
07:04Jorge Liboreiro, Euronews, Kiev.
07:09I walked exactly the same streets of Kiev three years ago in the first hours of Russia's
07:14full-scale invasion.
07:15And the atmosphere back then was completely different from the way it feels now.
07:20There was lots of shock, there was lots of frustration, and there was lots of fear.
07:25The streets here in Kiev were empty as people were hiding and staying in the bomb shelters.
07:32Now, today in February 2025, the atmosphere is completely different.
07:38Kiev is welcoming today 13 world leaders and the European Commission who are here to show
07:44their support to Ukraine.
07:47What has not changed is this feeling of resilience and also the feeling of determination of the
07:54Ukrainians to continue to defend their country from Russia's war of aggression three years
08:01on.
08:03Sasha Vakulina from Kiev for Euronews.
08:12Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said Russia is ready to negotiate with both
08:16Ukraine and Europe, but that military operations would stop only when negotiations yielded
08:22a firm, sustainable result that suits Russia.
08:26He spoke at a joint press conference with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on the
08:30third anniversary of Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
08:42Lavrov claimed Russia and the U.S. will have full-fledged consultations following recent
08:49bilateral talks and discuss the normalization of embassy operations in both Moscow and Washington.
09:20Talks between the Christian Democratic Union, the CDU, and the Social Democrats, the SPD,
09:28are to begin within the next couple of days, CDU leader Friedrich Merz announced on Monday.
09:34Merz said that initial talks about establishing a black-red coalition have already taken place
09:40and aims for the new government to be formed by Easter, which this year falls on April
09:4520.
09:46He highlighted his goal of steering Germany out of its economic crisis, particularly in
09:51light of the uncertain relationship with the U.S. and the ongoing stagnation of Europe's
09:55largest economy.
09:57All three Ample Coalition leaders, Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck
10:02and former Finance Minister Christian Lindner, have signalled that they will not be playing
10:06any major political roles in the future.
10:10The voter turnout at yesterday's election was the highest in decades, despite large
10:14numbers of Germans being relatively undecided about who they would vote for until the very
10:19last minute.
10:20However, the CDU faces an uphill battle in stimulating the economy and increasing defence
10:26spending as questions about reforming the debt break emerge.
10:30Liv Stroud, in Berlin, for Euronews.
10:37Pope Francis remains in critical condition and has shown early signs of kidney insufficiency,
10:43said the Vatican on Monday.
10:46The 88-year-old pontiff is battling pneumonia and a complex lung infection, but remains
10:51alert and was able to attend mass on Sunday.
10:55In their latest update, the Vatican said he hadn't had any more respiratory crises since
10:59Saturday night, but was still receiving high flows of supplemental oxygen.
11:05Some blood tests showed initial mild kidney failure, but doctors said it was under control.
11:14They said Francis' condition is touch and go, given his age, fragility and pre-existing
11:18lung disease, and that the main threat facing the Pope is sepsis, a serious infection of
11:23the blood that can occur as a complication of pneumonia.
11:28Meanwhile, prayers for Francis poured in from around the world over the weekend.
11:33From his native Argentina, to schoolchildren in Rome.
