Do we love our pets too much?

If you’ve had a pet, you’ll know the deep love that forms between owners and their furry friends. In fact, new research shows this love might be even more deep rooted than we’d once thought. But are we showing our pets the love they deserve? This National Love Your Pet Day, vet Dr Guy Sandelowsky is warning pet owners that how we show our pets love could be negatively impacting our furry friends. Many of us show our affection through food but how many treats is too many? Vet, Dr Guy Sandelowsky is warning pet owners of the key issues that cause our pets’ sickness - including over feeding pets or giving pets food they are intolerant to - as research shows that dog owners’ aren’t aware of how allergies to food can present themselves in their beloved pooch.

00:00I think the connection between humans and pets, especially dogs, has always been a pretty strong one.

00:07I think there is so much to be gained in our lives from having a companion like that.

00:13And, you know, the clichés around the loyalty, always being there for you.

00:18And in a world that is increasingly lonely, I would say, the importance of pets and the love they give to us

00:25and the love we share with them is going to only become more and more important and more and more pronounced.

00:31Which is why it's really important to also think about the health of our pets.

00:35What long-term effects we might see from either feeding the wrong foods or overfeeding?

00:41Yeah, I would say overfeeding, I mean, it's no different to sort of in the human space, right?

00:46We do have to be careful about how much we consume of the nutrition that's available.

00:51Anything can be excessive if done wrong, you know?

00:55So it's important to take a measured approach and to ensure that you're feeding the right quantity of food.

01:02At Omni in particular, we really try to make sure that our foods don't have excessive amounts of calories

01:09so that you can continue to feed your pets.

01:12But even then, there is a responsibility always on the pet owner to ensure that there isn't overfeeding,

01:18to ensure the compliance and sort of the better health.

01:21Because overfeeding is one of the main reasons that's contributing to obesity as well.

01:26But at the same time, we do have to look at the type of ingredients that are going into that food as well

01:31because that's also contributing there too.

01:33I feel like the relationship between food and how we feed our pets

01:37is always that bonding relationship between us and our pets as well.

01:41So it's a crucial one because they rely on us to give them the right nutrients.

01:46They have a very trusting relationship with their owners and the guardians to say that,

01:51well, they're going to look after me, they're going to give me what they want.

01:54And naturally, our pets can't choose for themselves.

01:56We're making the choice for them.
