UK: Stowaway chicken survives 56mph ride across county after jumping on back of lorry

A stowaway chicken was rescued by road workers after clinging to the back of their lorry and surviving a 25-mile journey at nearly 60mph.  The hen hitched a ride from a depot in Hartwell, Northants., to Irthlingborough, unnoticed until a resident spotted it running loose.  Workman Luke Stinson shared his sandwich and water with the bird before safely returning it to the farm.  The crew suspects the chicken had been roosting near a hopper of road grit, with Luke remarking, “It’s done bloomin’ well to get here.”

00:00I left the farm where these lorries are stored at this morning, left from North Buckingham, North Buds.

00:09Drove down the A45 past Billing and to Urfinburgh where we're at now to carry out some maintenance work on the roads.

00:19Stopped outside a gentleman's house and the chap said,

00:24Is that your chicken? And I said, What chicken?

00:28Whereupon me and the helpful gentleman ran round a cul-de-sac chasing the chicken and rescued it.

00:35Now we're going to take it back to the farmer where it belongs.

00:38So it's done some miles. I mean it's been sat on the lorry at 56mph on the dual garageway.

00:42It's done bloody well to get here, hasn't it?

00:44But anyway, all sailed from well. It's had a drink of water out of my mug and some oats there.

00:49So yeah, we'll get him back to the farmer I think.
