Why is there a surge in job scams in Nigeria?

The desperation of the many Nigerian job-seekers is making them vulnerable to scammers. At any given time, millions of youth are unemployed — a challenge the country has struggled with for decades.

00:00I saw your job on LinkedIn, really excited to apply, fresh girl and all, and what make

00:29me trust the job initially is that I trusted the source, the recruiter, and I was so eager

00:34to apply.

00:35The salary was good, though it was suspicious because I felt like the role was not technical

00:39enough to demand that salary, but at the same time I was like, let me not be doubting Thomas

00:42and he's a good opportunity.

00:44I applied, I got contacted, I got reached out to, to the extent of a file letter and

00:50even job role description, and I was even given a chore to do, and I noticed that when

00:54I did the chore I gave the resource person, I was not hearing anything again from them

00:59so I thought that was the problem, I thought maybe I was really bad at the remote thing

01:04that nobody wants to employ me, it took a really big toll on me at that moment.

01:08The scammers communicated with me via email, like I said, I saw this job on LinkedIn on

01:16a professional platform and I applied, our conversation ensued, I did an interview via

01:22Zoom and all that, and of course past the interview, the offer letter looked so detailed,

01:29so it was so so real, it was so detailed, it was so accurate, it was so real, you wouldn't

01:37even know, you wouldn't have a glimpse of an idea that the job is actually a scam.

01:52It's too good to be true, when the salary expectations are way too high, that when you

02:16see a particular job opportunity shows, you identify that okay, this kind of job opportunity

02:21is actually not real.

02:24The Federal Minister of Labour and Employment is very much aware of such job scams, and

02:30that is what informed the setting up of the NELEX platform, in which all employers are

02:37vetted before they are put on the platform, creating awareness and sensitization to Nigerians

02:45to be aware of the dangers of online job seekers.
