Good day. Welcome to the Gulf News Update for Monday, January the 6th. Here are the
00:10
top stories at this hour.
00:12
Banks in the UAE have started refunding the money back to customers who are affected due
00:17
to a glitch in the ATMs on Saturday. Several bank cards in the UAE failed, leaving customers
00:23
unable to withdraw money from ATMs or make over-the-counter payments in stores. Several
00:29
banks are believed to have been impacted, according to Network International. The payment
00:33
solutions provider said a slowdown in the connectivity grid was the cause of the problem.
00:39
An Emirates NBD official said the bank would like to assure all customers that their money
00:43
is secure and no customer will face any losses as a result of the incident.
00:48
Thousands of residents are fleeing the Iraqi city of Fallujah amid artillery fire and airstrikes
00:53
by government forces. The exodus comes after the government admitted it has lost control
00:58
over the city to al-Qaeda-linked militants and allied tribesmen.
01:03
Secretary of State John Kerry yesterday rejected Israeli and Palestinian claims of U.S. bias
01:09
as he made a whistle-stop trip to Jordan and Saudi Arabia to woo support for his peace
01:13
plan. Kerry promised any agreed plan would be fair and balanced. A Palestinian source
01:19
said Washington was proposing an Israeli-Palestinian military presence to ensure security in the
01:24
Jordan Valley.
01:26
Millions of people across the United States made last-minute preparations for an unusually
01:30
bitter Arctic blast that could send temperatures plummeting to their coldest in 20 years. The
01:36
deep freeze has moved through the Midwestern U.S., threatening usually balmy areas further
01:41
south like Tennessee and Alabama.
01:43
Bangladesh's ruling Awami League was leading in preliminary results following one of the
01:48
most violent elections in the country's history. The polls were marred by street fighting,
01:53
low turnout, and a boycott by the opposition. At least 18 people were killed in election-related
01:58
violence as opposition activists torched more than 100 polling stations Sunday.
02:04
In sport, Manchester United manager David Moyes admitted he is desperate to sign new
02:08
players in the January transfer window following last night's shock 2-1 FA Cup defeat by Swansea
02:15
City at Old Trafford.
02:17
The Red Devils crashed out at the third-round stage for only the second time in 30 years
02:22
after Wilfried Boni's last-minute winner punished them following Fabio's red card.
02:27
And finally, weather. Today's high across the UAE will be 23 degrees Celsius, dropping
02:32
to 17 degrees at night.
02:34
That's all for now. Thanks for watching, and as always, you can get the latest news at
