00:00Canadian media report that Canada has been told to expect 25% across-the-board U.S. tariffs
00:05from Tuesday.
00:07Energy exports would see a lower rate of 10% later this month.
00:11Canadians say they don't welcome the prospect of a trade war with the U.S. President Donald Trump.
00:15I think it's a crazy idea and I'm surprised that he's turning on Canada like this
00:21because we were always such good neighbors.
00:24But I also think that it's going to hurt the U.S. economy because here in Ontario
00:29we make a lot of auto parts, we sell to the U.S., they make cars.
00:33Now the cars are going to be more expensive.
00:35We've got elections on the door, we've got inflation, trying to figure out
00:41how are we going to get our groceries and figuring out housing.
00:46So at this very time, I'm like, well, how bad can it get, right?
00:51We already have high prices.
00:53The Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, vows a firm response.
00:57Tonight, I am announcing Canada will be responding to the U.S. trade action
01:04with 25% tariffs against $155 billion worth of American goods.
01:12The trade penalties against Canada of 25% are also being applied to Mexico.
01:18China is getting a 10% tariff.
01:21Trump argues the duties apply pressure on the three countries to tackle immigration
01:25and the quantity of the drug fentanyl coming into the United States.
01:30A lot of fentanyl comes through.
01:32He argues, too, that the tariffs will boost the U.S. economy.
01:37This business owner in Michigan, who relies on business with China, does not agree.
01:42That 10% on the wholesale end for the consumer becomes 20% on the retail end.
01:51I think people are going to be truly shocked at the pricing they're going to see on the
01:56cars, on the lumber, on the clothes, on the food.
02:00Many analysts are warning just that.
02:02Trump's trade war may stoke inflation in the United States
02:06and disrupt imports from more than $2 trillion of annual trade.
