Gareth Gates interview in Kings Theatre Portsmouth

00:00Yeah, it's been great. It's been 23 years. I feel very old now, but it's been an incredible

00:0723 years. I've done so much within my career, obviously being a pop star, back in the day

00:13touring, selling lots of records, you know, and all that that brings. I then ventured

00:20into musical theatre. I did Joseph on the West End, Les Mis, Legally Blonde, Footloose,

00:27to name a few. But yeah, it's been great. I've enjoyed the ride. I'm now in the world

00:34of producing. So the show I'm bringing to this beautiful theatre, the King's Theatre

00:40in Portsmouth, is a show that I'm producing myself called Gareth Gates Sings Love Songs

00:46from the Movies. One of my biggest selling hits and my first ever number one was Unchained

00:52Melody, which was made famous by Ghost. And so this got me thinking that some of the world's

00:58greatest love songs are from movies. So I put together a show with all those big songs

01:04and big hits in, songs from movies like Titanic, A Star is Born, Armageddon, Pretty Woman,

01:10Dirty Dancing, My Girl. And yeah, we can't wait to bring the show here to Portsmouth.

01:16Excellent. And so with that in mind, so obviously, apart from Ghost, which is everybody's favourite,

01:22do you have a personal favourite and a favourite song from those movies?

01:26Yeah, I don't want to miss a thing, which was sung by Aerosmith. One of my favourite

01:31songs of all time, actually, made famous by the movie Armageddon. I'll be, I'll be attempting

01:38to sing that on the night. And yeah, I can't wait to sing that song. So I, as a child,

01:46my stammer was quite debilitating. School was tough. I was badly bullied, sometimes

01:54beaten at school. And it was, it was a hard time. But then at the age of eight, I discovered

01:59I could sing and finally I could get words out of my mouth freely, without any tension

02:05or fear. And that kind of changed my world because I could finally express myself, get

02:12out of me what was in me. And I then learned to play several instruments. And yeah, so

02:19when Pop Idol came, it was, it was tough at the start because I didn't want to do it because

02:26the interviews I had to do and speaking live on television, but I kind of faced that fear.

02:32And I'm really pleased that I did in the end.

02:34Yeah. And as they say, the rest is history.

02:37Yeah, that's right. I've been fortunate to continue to work. You know, I'm still 23 years

02:43on treading the boards as it were. And yeah, still loving it like I did back in the day.
