Belgrade joy and art for Chinese New Year

Serbia is marking Chinese New Year with celebrations held in the country's capital Belgrade.  One of the organizers is a renowned Serbian artist who frequently performs in China.  Our correspondent Aljoša Milenković reports.  #Serbia #CNY #SpringFestival

00:00The Chinese Cultural Center in Belgrade is where officials released details of the week's long celebration.

00:07The mascot for the Year of the Snake was on hand to mark the occasion.

00:12One of the organizers is Slobodan Trkulja, a renowned Serbian artist who frequently performs in China.

00:19In Serbia we're celebrating Chinese New Year already for seven years with the Chinese Lantern Festival

00:24and since this year with Silk Road Festival I would like to congratulate Spring Festival on such a grand occasion

00:31and I wish you all the best in the New Year.

00:33Some 200 kilometers southeast from Belgrade in the town of Bor,

00:38Chinese state-owned Zijin Mining Group has invested billions in Serbian mining activities.

00:44Relations between the two countries have grown over the years and everyone is excited about the Chinese New Year.

00:53And here is a cook in the town of Bor preparing famous Chinese dumplings for the festivities.

01:02Dumplings come in various shapes. You can see this is a willow leaf-shaped dumpling,

01:06this is crescent-shaped and this is Chinese ancient ingot-shaped.

01:11You can choose whatever you want.

01:15Back in Belgrade, in the country's famous Kolarac concert hall,

01:19Serbia recently held a performance by a Chinese troupe from Jilin province.

01:24Their director said the Serbian and Chinese audience was thrilled.

01:31I'm particularly honored to bring an art troupe to Serbia to perform during the year of the Snake Spring Festival.

01:37I have some expectations for myself which are to bring more excellent programs to Serbia in the future,

01:42allowing Serbian audiences to better understand our China and our traditional culture.

01:49The audience gave cheering ovations to the performers.

01:52They sang Serbia's most cherished folk song, There, Far Away, and danced Chinese traditional dances.

02:00According to the Julian calendar, most everyone around the world celebrates the New Year on January 1st.

02:07But some places, like Russia, like Serbia, get to celebrate two other New Years this month,

02:14the Orthodox New Year and the Chinese New Year.
