Big cattle numbers continue to put pressure on prices at Naracoorte

SAL livestock manager Will Nolan says the cattle held up well but rainfall is needed.

00:00Prices definitely came off when you compare them to our earlier sales in January, no doubt about

00:04that. They could well be $0.80 to $1.80 a kilo off in certain categories. Tougher going at the moment

00:12but yeah there's obviously reasons we're into it too. A lot of numbers in today which is probably

00:16pretty normal for late January. I don't think the numbers you know in today's sale are a lot

00:21different than previous years although we have split the sale so you know there's a lot sold

00:25last week as well. We saw a lot of support from New South Wales which has really been strong

00:30throughout the whole renaissance period so yeah a lot of the cattle going back there still. I've

00:35got no doubt that a bit of rainfall will certainly help. It's dry here now like particularly in the

00:39last two weeks, two to three weeks it's dried right off. There's a lot of producers out there

00:45that have been hand feeding for probably three months till it you know hopefully we get a general

00:49break. The cattle here hold up beautifully and it's just weighted numbers that have gone through

00:54the system that are probably affecting it at the moment and the dry season that we talked about.
