DR Congo foreign minister calls on UN for action as rebels take over Goma

Thousands of residents who fled following a major escalation of the decades-long conflict arrived at the Rwandan border, as M23 rebels consolidate control of the city of Goma.

00:00Speaking at the Security Council, the Foreign Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo,

00:06Dereska Ikwamba-Wagner, called for UN intervention in the Rwandan advance.

00:12It comes after Congolese security forces tried to slow the advances of the Rwanda-backed

00:17M23 rebels who claim they captured the city of Goma on Monday.

00:23It is imperative that the Council introduces sanctions targeting the command structure

00:28of the Rwandan defence forces to undermine its ability to wage war against the DRC and

00:33its people.

00:34The Foreign Minister also called for the withdrawal of M23 troops from sovereign Congolese territory

00:41and an embargo on Rwanda's exploitation of mineral resources in the DRC.

00:46Meanwhile, thousands have fled the ongoing conflict and arrived at the Rwandan border.

00:51UN officials said hospitals are overwhelmed in Goma, and Wagner warned that thousands

00:56are trapped in the besieged city with restricted access to food, water and security.
