00:00Thanks, Agent Patrick.
00:01This time, whenever there's a celebration,
00:03food is a must.
00:05And usually, the food that is prepared
00:07are the ones that are already done
00:09and have a deep meaning in a culture.
00:11And for Chinese New Year,
00:13let's find out what traditional food
00:15is being prepared for this celebration.
00:17Let's watch this.
00:21In celebrating Chinese New Year,
00:23one of the best ways
00:25to witness and enjoy
00:27the Chinese tradition
00:29is through their delicious food.
00:33A good destination for this
00:35is the Chinese restaurant
00:37that we visited in a colorful
00:39and lively part of Manila
00:41where the culture and history
00:43of the Chinese people in the Philippines
00:45is flourishing.
00:47San Fernando Street, Binondo, Manila.
00:49They are known for their specialty
00:51of fresh seafood.
00:53From the huge squid and shrimp
00:55to different kinds of fish
00:57that are prepared using traditional
00:59Chinese flavors.
01:01And every food that is prepared
01:03for the new year
01:05has a symbolic meaning
01:07for the Chinese people
01:09that has a connection to hope,
01:11luck, happiness, and prosperity.
01:13They prepare 80 kinds of food
01:15for Chinese New Year
01:17because eight of them
01:19is luck.
01:21Some of the dishes that are usually
01:23prepared for Chinese New Year
01:25are fish maw and crab meat soup,
01:27white cut chicken,
01:29crispy pepper stone roast,
01:31seaweed fried rice,
01:33Hokkien oyster omelette,
01:35beef with broccoli satay,
01:37garlic rib,
01:39yellow fish with Thai sauce,
01:41and of course, the squid.
01:43The most important
01:45of the eight is the fish
01:47because the fish symbolizes
01:49that there is hope.
01:51In Chinese,
01:53it's called fish is
01:55he,
01:57in Hokkien.
01:59So that next year,
02:01they will have something left.
02:03The oyster cake is sticky
02:05so that the family can stick together.
02:07Just like the oyster cake,
02:09the squid is also prepared
02:11because it symbolizes
02:13the connection and good
02:15relationship of each family.
02:17Aside from that,
02:19the white chicken is also a symbol
02:21of harmony
02:23so it is often eaten on special occasions.
02:27Before the celebration,
02:29there is a tradition
02:31that the Chinese
02:33give respect and gratitude.
02:35Before they eat,
02:37they bow to their Buddha,
02:39to their God,
02:41so that the food
02:43will be with the spirits.
02:45Then they will eat their food.
02:47For every dish and preparation,
02:49we not only celebrate
02:51the new year,
02:53but also the traditions
02:55that are part of our past,
02:57present, and future.
02:59Despite all the joy
03:01and happiness,
03:03the Chinese New Year is a reminder
03:05that true wealth is the love
03:07and unity of the family.
