Will McDermott's Defense Ever Stop Mahomes?

Jeremy asks whether we should ever expect McDermott to slow down Mahomes in the playoffs. He points out how poor the defensive numbers look, and makes a comparison to Mike Tomlin.

00:00I think maybe today's McDermott Day, because the one thing I did say, again, kind of recapping

00:06my conversation with Carrington Harrison, who called to ask about how we're handling

00:11it, I said, you know, I have every belief the Bills will be a better roster next year,

00:16and will they get a better result?

00:17I don't know.

00:19But should I think that they're going to ever stop Patrick Mahomes defensively?

00:24Should I ever think that's going to happen?

00:28It really has never happened in the playoffs.

00:31Is that a, as long as McDermott's the coach, I'm not expecting it?

00:36That's a good question.

00:37I feel like the fourth down stuff, or kicking field goals, or time management, that stuff

00:42is easier for fans, including myself here, that is way easier for us to say, what is

00:48wrong with you?

00:50How could you not understand how this works?

00:52And when we're talking about calling a defense, well, that's something he does understand,

00:57and I am not exactly going to say I do.

01:00So all I can do is look at the results, and if we look at the results in the playoffs

01:05against Mahomes, it starts to look like Tomlin in the playoffs.

01:12It's always 30 points.

01:14And last year, like, go through the numbers, Joe, AFC championship points, or whatever,

01:20playoff points, you give up to Mahomes.

01:22How many times have the Chiefs punted in four games?

01:25It's not many.

01:27It's not many at all.

01:29If you go back to 13 seconds, why do we think they're going to win 13 seconds?

01:32Because the Bills had scored so late that you didn't have to stop Mahomes.

01:37The clock would stop him, and it still didn't.

01:40Last year, one fumble out of the back of the end zone keeps that a one-score game.

01:44If Tyler Bass misses the kick, guess what probably happens?

01:48You probably do not stop him.

01:51They don't, ever.

01:54And I don't know that I'll ever think that they will in the playoffs.

01:57So I kind of have both sides of it right now rattling around in my head about, well, yeah,

02:03of course they'll be back here, and will they beat them?

02:05Maybe.

02:06They probably could have beat them once or twice already.

02:08And with some bad luck, or some bad calls, or some mistakes, they fall short.

02:14But I don't think this is the best version of the Bills that the Chiefs will ever see.
