Storm Eowyn is here. It's already brought some strong damaging winds and will continue
00:05
to do so, especially across parts of Northern Ireland and Scotland as we go through the
00:09
rest of today and into tomorrow. But let's look at some of the figures. And in the Republic
00:14
of Ireland, they've provisionally recorded their strongest gust on record with 114 miles
00:20
per hour earlier on today. Meanwhile, in Wales and Northern Ireland, we've had gusts in excess
00:25
of 90 miles per hour, and that's because it's a really deep area of low pressure. Fortunately,
00:30
it did start to fill a little bit before it reached the UK. But nonetheless, in Northern
00:34
Ireland, we recorded a pressure of 949 hectopascals, which is a new January record and the deepest
00:41
or the lowest pressure recorded in Northern Ireland since at least 1900. But if we look
00:46
at the satellite imagery and you can really see the feature that is Storm Eowyn, there
00:50
was a sting jet in association with this, which is why we're seeing these really intense,
00:56
strong, damaging winds. The whole feature is pushing its way northeastwards. This is
01:00
what happened earlier on today. We can see we had some heavy rain, some strong winds
01:03
across most parts of the UK. For many areas towards the south, a lot of the worst of the
01:08
weather is kind of clearing away. But towards the north here, we do still have some very
01:13
unsettled weather because of how close we are to this deep area of low pressure. It's
01:17
the winds that are causing the greatest concern and they're going to be strongest on the southern
01:22
edge of this system as it pushes its way towards the northeast. The winds will also be changing
01:27
direction as the low moves away. But we are going to see very strong winds through today,
01:32
storm force winds through today and into tomorrow as well, pushing away towards the northeast.
01:37
So most places seeing lighter winds coming in from the south as we go through tomorrow.
01:42
But with that in mind, you're probably aware we do have a couple of red wind warnings out
01:47
because there is going to be some very strong winds, damaging winds, which could bring some
01:52
major problems or already bringing some major problems. Across Northern Ireland, it's through
01:56
the next couple of hours. So the first couple of hours of the afternoon where we're seeing
01:59
the strongest winds. Meanwhile, across southern Scotland, it's going to last for a little
02:03
bit longer as we go deeper into the afternoon towards the evening with the potential for
02:07
gusts reaching 100 miles per hour in some places. There are also yellow and amber warnings
02:13
across the whole of the UK for a variety of things, mainly wind, but also some significant
02:17
snow above three, four hundred meters. We're likely to see some snow over parts of Scotland.
02:22
So add that to the strong winds and the heavy rain. But like I said elsewhere, although
02:26
we had a spell of very unsettled weather pushing through overnight, it's actually a drier,
02:32
brighter picture across many places, albeit still windy, but not as windy as it will be
02:37
further north. A quick look at our temperatures and well, they're relatively academic because
02:41
of how windy is particularly towards the north around or a little bit below average
02:44
for the time of year. Now, as we go through the evening and overnight, we will continue
02:49
to see some heavy rain, sleet, snow and very strong winds still across parts of Scotland.
02:54
But as I showed, the whole system pushing away towards the northeast behind it, we do
02:58
have fairly frequent showers coming in and these will be a bit wintry at times. So some
03:03
further sleet or snow, there could be some hail, could be some thunder mixed in with
03:06
them as well. But further south across many central southern parts, apart from in the
03:11
southeast where there's a bit of rain at times coming through for many, it's going to be
03:15
largely dry and with clear skies, we could see temperatures dropping. So a bit of an
03:18
ice risk or snow and ice towards the north, ice risk across other areas. And there will
03:23
be a bit of frost first thing on Saturday morning. Otherwise, through Saturday and well
03:27
across parts of Scotland, still plenty of showers, still the risk of some thunder, some
03:31
hail, maybe a bit of sleet or snow over the higher ground mixed in with these. Still some
03:35
very strong winds to watch out for, but the winds gradually easing as air wind clears
03:39
away towards the northeast. And then otherwise, a fair deal of fine weather, a calmer day
03:44
for many of us, but something starting to push its way into the west as we go through
03:49
later on. A quick look at temperatures again and well, they're still similar to today really.
03:54
Lighter winds though, so feeling a bit more pleasant, especially with some decent sunshine.
03:58
But there is some more unsettled weather to come. Like I said, there's a system coming
04:02
in from the west. That is going to bring some rain, perhaps even some hill, sleet and snow
04:06
for a time as it makes its way from west to east as we go through Saturday evening and
04:11
overnight into Sunday. That clears away. It's another feature that's coming in that's another
04:16
cause for concern with a deepish area of low pressure likely to bring some very unsettled
04:21
weather, heavy rain, strong winds, particularly towards parts of the south and west. Doesn't
04:26
look like it will be as impactful a storm air wind, but because it's coming so quickly
04:30
after the very unsettled weather we're having at the moment, it could nonetheless cause
04:34
some major impact. So it's definitely worth keeping up to date with that. Now, our warnings
04:38
are constantly being updated. Make sure you stay on top of them by checking out our website
04:43
and our app. Otherwise, we'll see you soon. Bye bye.
